The View's Whoopi Goldberg And Joy Behar Walk Out on Bill O'Reilly
By Jillian Bowe on October 14, 2010
The ladies of The View went to the mat when Fox News pundit Bill O'Reilly stopped by today. The show's co-hosts, Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar, got into a heated debate with O'Reilly over whether or not Park51, the Muslim community center and mosque slated to go up two blocks from the World Trade Center, should be built. O'Reilly declared the center is "inappropriate" because of the victims' families, while Goldberg, Behar and Barbara Walters cried foul. Things took a nasty turn when the ladies asked O'Reilly why he believed it shouldn't be built to which he stated:
Because Muslims killed us on 9/11.
To say drama ensued is an understatement. To see the mele in action, watch after the jump.

I just saw this and I agree with Bill O'reilly. Joy is more of a bigot then any other star out there. She hates catholics and says some very nasty things about catholics. I am surprised that Whoopie walked off the stage. Joy to me is a useless piece of crap.

Muslims didn't kill us on 9/11. Extremists did. Just like an extremist killed people when the Federal building was bombed in Oklahoma. I don't remember everyone blaming everyone who worshipped the same way Timothy McVeigh did, or targeting people who looked just like him. People of all religions have done evil things. Hello, The Crusades, the Salem Witch Trials, Slavery. Just like all Christians should not be blamed for what a select group of evil people did, all Muslims should not be held responsible for the tragedies of 9/11.

Joy Behar is Catholic. A practicing Catholic. She is not more bigoted than Bill O'Reilly. That's just laughable. He's just laughable.

I saw this on tv today. I was so angry at Whoopi and Joy for letting this loud-mouthed blow-hard come on their show and run them off their own stage. When they did that, Bill O'Reilly basically won the argument in my eyes. He would never let anyone run him off his own show (although he would have their mics turned off). Them walking off seemed weak to me. They should have stayed, defended their positions intelligently and shut him up.

Maven ar eyou following me on twitter? *LOL* I said that on there, Whoopi and Joy let O'Reilly come in their own house and own them. If you agree with him or not you never EVER let someone come into your own backyard and run you like that.

I watched the whole interview at ABC.com and only that, didn't want my ears to bleed that much. They think their word is law, not when Bill in the house he won. He is saying what real working Americans wanted to say, that are barley hanging on like me. My insurance just went up $75, how about yours.

He is a DOUCHE. They should not have let him get to them like that.
I'd walk away to if I were in the unfortunate position of having to listen to the bulls**t that comes out of his mouth in person. That being said. They are being paid millions of dollars. They should have been able to succinctly state their case to shut him and "real working Americans that are barley hanging on" down.
Any YUTZ that thinks that someone who kills hundreds or thousands of people in the name of GOD is a Religious or spiritual person, needs to be SCHOOLED. People who KILL in this manner are EXTREMISTS, TERRORISTS,COWARDS- feel free to choose.

I am confused as to why people seem to be taking a position that one or the other is in the wrong. IMHO both Joy/Whoopi AND O'Reilly acted stupidly and the conversation had zip in terms of meaningful dialog because both parties wanted to zing each other and play gotcha politics. I almost never watch any part of the view because they insist on screaming over one another - what does that achieve and why bother having a guest on at all if they cant get a word in edge wise.
As for the Mosque, I have thought about this a lot. Legally they have a right to build there and if thats what they decide to do then I have to defend that right. Its certainly preferably to a strip joint or some other trash like that. That said, I think the builders should respect the feelings of the families and its clear that they dont want the cultural center at that locaton. There must be some way to raise enough money to turn that 3 or 4 block radius into an extended memorial area and work from there. There has to be a way to find a good solution so that everyone walks away feeling like they got some WIN out of it instead of everyone always just trying to make a point.
Jamey - as for Tim M. he didnt blow up the Fed bldg in OKC in order to advance the views of a particular religion so your analogy is a false one. If he said "I am blowing this building up as an offering to Jesus so that I will be honored in heaven" I am sure there would have been great political blow back against whatever church he was attending, if not the religion as a whole. As it was, there was significant political reverb against people who share McVeigh's limited government, pro-gun philosophy even though the vast majority of people who believe in those things were outraged and sickened by McVeigh's radical actions as a means of furthering those ideas. Do you not remember the press using the term right-wing terrorist? I dont remember anyone saying that was wrong or evil or prejudice to lump all conservatives in with a small group of nut jobs. Moreover that small group of nuts jobs doesnt have a world wide organization with thousands of cells and millions of dollars in support. Its unfortunate that O'Reilly used the term muslim instead of RADICAL muslim but I guess my point is its sort of human nature given that the terrorist CHOSE to identify themselves in that manner, just like McVeigh CHOSE the way he identified himself.

Not to get political, but I agree w/Bill that the mosque should not be built there. And keep in mind that this is coming from a lefty and someone who thinks that Bill needs a damn muzzle.
As for the clip, I SMDH @ it, b/c it proves why Bill needs that muzzle and I agree w/Babs that Whoopi and Joy did the wrong thing in leaving.
The Frons gets moist when the crown jewel of his lineup gets clockwork mainstream buzz.

The sad reality is that middle america is as ignorant as we hate to believe. Thats why soaps cowtow to them, and get rid of the gays and minorities on our shows. Bill is right, that most american's don't want that mosque there. Many of them have many different reasons for it, but 70% of people don't want it, just like 65% of people didnt want obamacare. But the politicians don't care. They think that they are parents and know what is best for us. That is horseshit, and they know it. They are elected to represent what their constituents want, not what they want. When over half don't want something, then perhaps they should listen.
IMHO, Joy is a blowhard, and today proved it. He was trying to explain his point, and although he may have been a bit boorish, she tried to shout over him and make him back down, when he didn't, she ran away. Whoopi, is, well I don't know, she is a poor replacement for Rosie, and I can't stand that loudmouth bitch.
Personally, I think that putting a mosque any where near the site of 9/11 is rude, disrespectful, and insulting. Yes, I know that some muslims were inside the towers, but what Elizabeth said was true, if they were allowed to be called terrorists, they wouldn't be so heavily identified with their religion.
Jamey, the reason they never identified others within McVeigh's religion, was because all through his trial and all the news coverage he was identified as a "domestic terrorist" not a "radical christian extremist".

Oh...okay, so then because Jim Jones chose to identify himself a Christian, along with that fool in Waco, it would be okay for a pundit to go on TV and say all Christians are responsible for their actions?

Amen, Jamey...and I mean that in a non-religious way!
O'Reilly drives me insane but I do agree that they should have stayed and not let his bulls**t chase them away. They actually looked stupider coming back than if they had just stayed off-stage throughout the rest of the interview. His "apology" for "demeaning" Muslims was a crock. He is the ultimate pinhead!

Joy Behar is not a practicing Catholic. She claims to be agnostic. She is a liberal bigot who cannot get into intellectual discourse because she is a moron. She is laughable, but she is not funny. It is obvious, in the clip, the level of her stupidity - her humor lacks intelligence ( "Who's the pinhead"). Why would anyone listen to this woman and respect anything that comes out of her mouth?

Whoopi and Joy shouldn't have walked off stage. That was very unprofessional.
With that said, discussions like this tend to get heated and emotional. I agree with Jamey..all Christians weren't blamed for what Jim Jones did. All Christians aren't blamed for bombing abortion clinics either. There are various examples of specific people using their religious beliefs as an excuse to hurt others....but they are not the majority. Meanwhile...those actual extremists are sitting laughing because they have turned Americans into angry, hateful people. They don't have to attack us...we are doing a fine job of that ourselves.

Jamey I didnt say it was okay, I said it wasnt unusual, that it was human nature to not always correctly parse out a segment of a group from the group as a whole. As for Jim Jones, again you are categorizing him as a christian when that his not how the media classified him at the time. I dont seem to recall him talking about being an example for christians so much as his own separate group. Back then the story, at least as far as the public was fed the story by the media, was about groups that were deemed CULTS and there was a backlash against groups that were considered to be "cults" typically defined as "A small, recently created, religious organization which is often headed by a single charismatic leader and is viewed as an spiritually innovative group." I am sure many groups that might be considered cult-like back then disdained being lumped in with the likes of Jim Jones but there you have it.
I am not saying that O'Reilly was right, in fact, I said JUST THE OPPOSITE so please dont misconstrue my original post. To repeat, my OP said "IMHO both Joy/Whoopi AND O'Reilly acted stupidly"
You seem to want to make this a christians vs. muslim debate. If so, you win because certainly all religions (and athiests too for that matter) have had their fair share of nut jobs associated with them. that said I also think you have to recognize that rightly or wrongly our national sentiments are still raw with respect to 9/11 and the group of individuals that perpetrated that horror identified themselves as acting on behalf of islam. For that reason, I would think you could understand why some people might feel like having a mosque at the sight of that tragedy would be distasteful. Its just my take that ultimately we dont strengthen our country by having these screeching debates where both sides are polorized and entrenched. Both sides have legitimate aspects of concerns and we as a nation have to work through the discussion and try to get to a place of concensus.

Bullshit.
Splitting hairs over whether or not Joy and Whoopi walking off stage is unprofessional is a cop-out. This is a human issue, and walking off stage to regain their composure is far more professional than slapping the snot out of his face, which I'm not entirely sure I would not have done were I in their shoes.
If you don't think the Mosque should be built near Ground Zero, fine, but to form your mouth and literally say "Muslims killed us on 9/11" is disgusting and irresponsible, and completely offensive to those in the Muslim community that object to extremist behavior. Many Americans practice the Muslim faith and they come in all races and lifestyles, and for him to make a sweeping statement like that, regardless of his reputation, means he handed them an open invitation to put their foot in his ass. They did him a favor by walking away.
If you possess the courage of your convictions, sometimes you may be called upon to kick "professionalism" to the side, and that's exactly what they did. I commend them.

Ericaseviltwin: If you disagree with Jamey's point because those murders weren't done in the name of Christianity, then what about when radical Christian/s blow up abortion clinics (killing people inside), or like that recent case where a fundamentalist Christian killed Dr. Tiller? Those particular terrorists identified themselves (and their violent actions) as "Christian", but no one conflates their crazy actions with an essentialist/universal maxim of Christianity (nor should they), and Jamey's point is simply that we shouldn't do it either with Muslims.
Furthermore, saying that we should be "understanding" about some people not wanting a Cultural Center (it's not strictly a Mosque if we are to be specific) in that spot, is tantamount to acquiescing to bigotry. If Rosa Parks had just been more "understanding" about how uncomfortable she was making those white people on the bus, an entire social movement (for the better) would not have occured. American history is littered with good works achieved by first class "trouble makers" -- i.e. not terrorists or murderers, but people who non-violently push for reforms by refusing to "understand" and "accommodate" bigotry. Sometimes it's good to be a recalictrant, especially if the standard is nothing more than thinly veilved racism (and in this case, thinly veiled Islamophobia).
Building this Cultural Center would actually go a long way towards non-violently repairing the relations between peace-loving Muslim-Americans (and peace-loving Muslims worldwide) and the rest of the non-Muslim population. I guarantee you in ten years, teenagers won't be able to comprehend what all the fuss was about and that in itself will be a triumph over bigotry.
Also, I live in Manhattan (and I was actually here on September 11th, 2001) and I can assure you that it's almost axiomatic that Manhattanites don't give a damn about this issue. Google it and you'll see that the majority of Manhattanites -- you know, the people directly in the line of fire when the attacks occurred -- are not against building it.
Finally, if we're going to delineate the particulars, let's do all of them:
1) There are many Mosques already in Manhattan.
2) There are many peaceful and non-radical Muslims in the U.S. and certainly in Manhattan who deserve to have their religion (and artificats of their religion) recognized like any other.
3) The sacred ground people are getting so huffy about isn't exactly the site of the WTC but is actually where a -- wait for it -- Burlington Coat Factory used to be!
4) September 11th and its ramifications is an issue far too complex to reduce to an ignorant statement about religion. To really get into it, you'd have to get into the complex history of Saudi-Arabia and Afghanistan, and the sub-groups involved in the planning and execution of the attack. This has a lot to do with global economics, localized poverty (of an insane magnitude most Americans cannot comprehend) and American foreign policy over the last 20 years. In this case, religion is a tool used by certain political and non-political figures to further a violent agenda by manipulating poverty-stricken pawns. Making it solely about religion then is like looking at a village where it always rains and blaming the constant floods on all the umbrellas.

The View ladies basically got housed on their own turf today because they allowed themselves to be. The View is supposed to be a show where strong, independent women talk about the issues of the day and when a guest says something provocative (that's why they booked him in the first place), they walk off the set like little girls. Many are also saying that O'Reilly did this just to gain cheap publicity for his book. Hello! Whether you like or dislike the man, he has like 10 New York Times bestsellers and the #1 program on cable news by a wide margin. I'm not his biggest fan, but facts are facts.
One of the main problems with this program (and I think this program is better with Whoopi in the moderator role rather than bully Rosie) is that there truly is no balance. Joy is the liberal bomb-thrower that's supposed to counteract Elizabeth, who is really just an overly emotional conservative punching-bag. Whoopi obviously leans left and Sherri, while not part of a particular ideology, worships Obama and everything he does even if she hasn't a clue about the particular issue. There are plenty of smart, conservative women and smart, liberal women that can discuss issues and be entertaining at the same time.
Sometimes discussions aren't had within politically correct guidelines. Everyone says they want an honest and open dialogue about various issues (race, homosexuality, war on terror, abortion, economy, environment, etc, etc), but when someone says something with which andther person disagrees, stupid things like this clip happen. I think there is a balance between making a blanket statement and being too overly sensitive, but clearly that balance has not been achieved.

Bill only said what needed be said, this show is spouse to be womens views not the extreme left view. Although I don't agree with him at some times, did love seeing Babs squirm in her adult diaper. Joyless and Whoppi must have had to gone back stage to change theirs. I did watch the whole interview, lord I don't no why wished they kept on walking, it's just ridicules how people go GAGA over this show. Went to Target to buy the book because that's my right, just to despite them. This is why we don't need anymore talk shows. This the kind of crap they are going to do on the talk. Joy Behar should have left this show a long time ago. She pouts and shouts whenever someone challenges her with a differing opinion especially if they aren't a Liberal. She and Whoopi were very unprofessional to storm off the stage, just as Barbara Walters pointed out!
CBS' new daytime talker is looking better every day, I just hope it's on at the same time "The View" is.
Whether or not you agree or disagree with Bill O'Reilly, he was able to make his point. Should he have been able to finish his statements before being so rudely interrupted, he may have chosen his words more wisely (I highly doubt it). I think the majority of Americans are intelligent enough to discern what he was trying to say.
While I do agree that Muslims, as a whole should be able to practice their faith anywhere, it is very insensitive to build a Mosque near Ground Zero, even if it's a few blocks away!

I personally don't care if they build a mosque near ground zero. I am so tired of people discriminating against muslims just because of 9/11. I am not Muslim and I don't live in NYC but I feel it's unfair to discriminate against these people. As a black man I have faced many forms of discrimination and it's disgusting that a great number of americans are so open about their dislike about this mosque being near ground zero. Nobody has ridiculed the christians for there hand in slavery but all muslims should suffer because of a few extremists.
Bill O'Reily is a disgusting human being. I used to watch his show when I was in college and finally I wised up and turned that trash off. He's a disgusting bully and all I can do is shake my head at those who are naive enough to follow this man. His "conservative" values is what is ruining this country! HATE HATE HATE he needs to go sat his ass down somewhere.
I watched the show and I don't blame Joy and Whoopi for walking off. It was disgusting seeing Bill O'Reily use a poor choice of words to describe those morons who hijacked the planes on 9/11. I think being on tv in front of millions of views these political pundits or whatever they call themselves need to quit making up their own "reality". It's sad that some will blindly believe what Bill said. that's why it is DANGEROUS for him to go out giving this FALSE information. People like him need to be stopped.

First off I quit watching this show a long time ago because it had turned into nothing but a scream fest.
I have never liked Joy because she is a loud mouth and constantly interrupts anyone who is talking no matter their religion or politics or whatever reason they have the guest on the show.
I have always liked Whoopi, but our politics do differ.
I am not going to debate if Bill O. was right or wrong. The fact is I don't need any of these people to educate me on what is what. I can make my own decisions, I have my own opinions and I have my own beliefs and will act and do accordingly.

Akash and Nova thank you all this talk about insentive about building a mosque their, and the majority of americans not wanting it built is BS and for the record I live in NYV and had to experience theday and the aftermath first hand.
The majority of americans didn't want to end slavery, the majority of americans didn't want to integate the public school system I can go on. Religion is tied to some of the most horrendeous evils, prejudices and discrimation in our country so please lets not go there.
What is so insentive about building a mosque four blocks away from WTC, maybe it is just want this country needs. Many we need to be more accepting of things we don't understand, maybe we need to not live by fear and hate.
Whoopie and Joy were unprofessional, and they weren't owned in their own house nor did Bill win any argument there is a time to confront and a time to take a break and walk away before you end up doing or saying something that can cause you harm. They needed to collect themseves and that is what they did.

What the entire mosque debate boils down to is ignorance, racial and religious. For those like Bill O who believe as he put it, "muslims killed us on 9ll", tend to hold a worldview seeped in fear. Bill sticks to the Faux news narrative, which is to deride anything that is not Christian and sadly eurocentric. If the terrorist were a group of white and let's say catholic Irish extremist bent on advancing their religious views through violence; would we be condeming all Irish people? No! Historically, darker skinned people have always been demonized in the media unfairly in this country. Obama's historic election has only intensified dogmatic hatred and prejudice amongst some Americans. Legally, the mosque/community center has the right to go near ground zero. Lack of understanding about the Muslim faith is the primary driving force behind the anger and angst the O'Reilly's of the word eschew. Whose interest will the mosuque serve? Everyone in the communtiy because it is a community center.
