Is ABC Daytime About to Announce a Two-Year Pick Up For One Life to Live?!

In an article for the Denver Post, journalist Joanne Ostrow is reporting ABC is about to announce a two-year pick up for embattled soap opera One Life to Live.

ABC owns its soaps, unlike the CBS relationship with P&G. ABC's "One Life to live" is soon to announce a deal to live two more years.

Okay, this industry and her fans have some rough times in the last few years, but if this news proves true, I say it's reason enough for us to all go dancing, butt ass naked in the streets, singing "For Fronsie's a Jolly Good Fellow"!

Jamey right now oltl has one of the strongest casts in daytime.I wonder if this was what the mandatory meeting held earlier this month was about. If this is proven true hail abc daytime. We can bitch about frons all day but the difference between hi and bloom is he cares about the genre.

ABC owns their soaps, so they don't have to announce deals to continue them. They'd only announce that they're canceled. That writer doesn't know what she's talking about!

DavidsMuse, I just spoke with an insider who said exactly what you just said. They said the verbiage is odd, because ABC doesn't have to make two-year deals with shows they own outright. I guess we will learn more tomorrow.

Yeah, seems she worded it improperly, but I'm guessing she heard something that appears to be positive news.

Well lets hope she heard something positive correctly and not "canceled after two years"

hell right now I'd take anything positive.

Here's my prediction. OLTL will be the guinea pig soap. They will pick it up and make big changes to it. Remember that announcement that OLTL is "going in a new direction"? I feel like this soap is going to get an overhaul and it will be ABC's test. They aren't going to mess with AMC or GH, so this is their chance.

I just PRAY TO GOD and the angels that Ellen Wheeler goes NO WHERE near this show!!

Ugh, if they're going to overhaul one show it should be GH, not OLTL. Lord knows they can both improve but GH is a disaster currently--bad writing (Brenda's disastrous return, Lucky's stoopid caper, everything Lante), disengaged actors (Bernard needs to be let go or at least given a rest--I think he glances at the script an hour before he's supposed to shoot and let's not even get into Tyler Christopher), and a complete neglect of the show's rich history.

It's not a "pick-up," since ABC doesn't have to renew their shows, but it is a commitment that will be announced with some fanfare this week. I'm not sure of all the changes planned (although I know they're not planning GL-style filming, thank God), but I do know the show is shortening its title, officially, to "One Life" by the end of the year.

As for All My Children, talk is it may be gone by next fall to make way for a spin-off of The View, a show which will likely end up in GH's timeslot, with GH moving to 1 PM Eastern.

OLTL is the best...........The show that needs the overhaul is GH. I stopped watching it is so bad. Women are not respected at GH. .........I cannot imagine who is watching that show. Personality wise...

Well, I don't know if these changes are going into effect. I don't want to start rumors, but I am reading between the lines.

Speaking of rumors...I highly doubt axing "To Live" from the show's long running title is going to help gain viewers. That would be the worst move, because people's DVR's would have to be reset. Cougartown anyone??

AMC needs the makeover! Why they keep pushing Rylee on us is beyond me.

They will not be shortnening OLTL to One Life They would be stupid

This is not Like Takin The "The" From Guiding Light"

Taking The "To Live" Away Would Be a dumb mistake and doubt ABC would do it

Hi This is my first posting on the site...and I wanted to say I love you guys and your podcast...Jamie you are especially funny...you have the personality of someone who would be one of my best friends..lol...anyway..I'm a longtime OLTL supporter, and I hope that there is official good news announced this week! And to comment on the three remaining ABC soaps...As someone who has watched all three at different times over the past 30 years, All My Children is the one that is in the worst shape, by far. In the late 70s and early to mid 80s it was the BOMB...such great writing and storytelling...but now it is absolutely drab and boring. And just because Susan Lucci is still on doesn;t automatically validate the show. She is a legend but one person can't carry the show.

could this just be an announcement to let the affliates know that OLTL will air for at least the next two years and that hour won't be free or have something new in it? I have heard that OLTL actually makes the most money for ABCD since they are under budget

If you guys were told the same thing DavidsMuse said why are you contributing to this stupidity? This article is poorly written and goes from point A to point Z with nothing in between.

I am not saying it is true or not, but it seems every time something happens-OLTL is having a meeting that means it's canceled, ABC couldn't make a deal with the WGA, OLTL is getting canceled, now thatthere is a .0001% chance OLTL might have some good news, which they never have, and it must not be true.

I am praying that this means good news. I don't care what big changes are made, as long as Robin & Erika stay on the show and Ron is able to write whatever the hell he wants...

I love how soap fanatics are twisting themselves into knots to make this bad news. It's GOOD news, if it proves to be true. God, what does it take to make you people accept reality!? Jeezus!

I'm having such a laugh these days. I'm going through old printouts from soap blogs from a decade ago, with people ranting about how bad their favorite soaps are. Today, I see people posting about the GOOD OLD DAYS of those storylines which used to be the subject of so much complaint. Soap fans have the longest memories about the minutiae of storylines, but such short memories about their own opinions... LOL!

Sounds like good news to me!
I am a die hard OLTL fan though so I will take any hint of good news as a cue to celebrate!

I'm also hoping that this is good news for OLTL as it is by far my favorite soap. It has one of the most talented casts and stories that are mostly well-written. It has shown that it doesn't take a huge budget or crazy stunts or CGI to produce a good show. If only Fronsie would leave Ron C. alone to write what he wants and not what focus groups want, it would be The Perfect Soap. If any ABC soap is going to be overhauled or (God forbid) cancelled, it should be AMC which is the daytime equivalent of Ambien right now. LONG LIVE LLANVIEW!!!

MadDog Lane, I linked the Denver Post, a reputable newspaper, which is reporting a story on daytime. It's no different than having linked Ad Age, when I scratched my head about something in the verbiage. Apparently the Post reporter was told something of substance, considering she interviewed an industry insider. We are "contributing" to anything. I asked someone after I posted this what it meant. That person gave me their answer, but also said it was very likely the Post reporter knew something they didn't.

Hmmm, interesting. If this is true, sounds like they are getting two years instead of the one everyone was speculating about. This would also go towards what Jamey has said his insiders told him about 2012 being the year for OLTL. If this is true, I take it as basically saying this show has two years to turn it around ratings wise or..... Anyway, I will hold off on praising Fronsy since this is good spin to cover himself if they cancel the show in two years. He can always say "we tried everything, we gave them two years, the network committed to turning the show around but at the end of the day, blah, blah, blah."

Let's be on honest if one ABC is gone by next fall it won't be AMC or GH. As dull as AMC is it has regularly beaten OLTL which means more viewers who watch ads that bring in money

I'll say this AGAIN...

1. OLTL holds its own ratings-wise.
2. It makes money for ABC(credit its production model).
3. ABC's got nothing to replace it with.
4. SoapNet has nothing to replace it with.

Shortening the title is simply a cosmetic change that makes no difference. I feel neutral about it. A title doesn't make me like or not like a show (e.g. Cougar Town---awesome show with a silly title that doesn't reflect its content).

I hope they don't abruptly change their behind-the-scenes stuff. OLTL has the best lighting of all the soaps. Its sets are pretty decent, and I've never had any complaints with hair, makeup, and wardrobe. They pulled off a really good musical with what I assume is a fairly modest budget.

What they need to focus on is the storytelling. Getting rid of interesting characters, turning Eli evil, and force-feeding us the Ford brothers turned me off the show. I haven't watched OLTL since June and I have no plans to come back unless they're going to fix these mistakes. I think these things are JP's show-killing influences more so than RC's.

I don't totally hate the Ford brothers, I just hate the way they were thrown at us once James arrived. Eli is not an important character like a Buchanan but he was a nice alternative to the Todds and Johns of the show, and now he's ruined. Hopefully the return of Joey Buchanan is a sign that OLTL is interested in finding its identity again.

Let's be honest, GH will never be cancelled and between OLTL and AMC OLTL is the best show. As much as I love AMc, it was my gateway soap, I'd much rather see OLTL get the push it so completly deserves! And really, isn't it in ABC's best interest to put it's full support behind the show that's doing the best?
Finally OLTL stops getting the red-headed step-child treatment!
Thanks Jamey for the hot Viki and David pic. Ohh-cha-la!

Oltl has never really held it's own rating wise maybe in the past but now it most usually dead last. GH and AMC have recently cracked the top 5 or 6. Also my problem with OLTL is that it lacks romance or any couples at all

If the network cancelled ONE LIFE TO LIVE, it would be genre suicide. Seriously...now you have a bunch of vanilla people shows, with carbon copy settings...the only diversity you have is that GENERAL HOSPITAL takes place in a hospital (or use to), and BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL takes place in the fashion world. Aside you have the day to day intrigues of the front and center waspy families such as the Hortons, Martins, Chandlers, Quartermaines, Spencers, Forresters, Logans, Newmans and Abbotts, with their token black friends and rarely scene relatives of color, sexual preference, and diverse ethnic backgrounds. ONE LIFE had that diversity for most of 2009...and I was so proud to be watching the show. Now not to say they haven't been all about the white people lately, but oh they have such a diverse cast, so many connections to the Jewish, African-American, Latino-American, and gay communities that it really is the soap of today, given that it was ahead of it's time back when it premiered. I am hoping whatever plans they have for it to take it in a new direction is in the sense that it is drawing on it's rich past. I'd love to see the Wolek family come back. Dr. Dan, is Viki's nephew, and Llanview Hospital could use a new chief of staff.
