I am commenting because this story for ATWT certainly deserves more than four posted replies! I think I will miss seeing Barbara Ryan (Colleen Zenk) most of all. I really don't know why except to say that my deceased beloved mother watched ATWT back in the 80s and always commented on how beautiful Colleen Zenk was. That was my mom's way of saying Colleen was a star worth watching. Although I am not a regular viewer, I will miss tuning in from time to time and seeing the Hughes family too.
UGH!!! Every time I think about this show ending, it makes me nauseous!!! How can a show with so much potential that is STILL so entertaining be ending????

The writers often get the blame when a show goes downhill. What about the person who keeps the writers on their toes, makes sure the actors do a decent job, and delivers what the fans tune in for?
Without being my usual dramatic self, I’ll say that one Christopher Goutman should forever be known as the man who killed ATWT. For years we heard about him being a son-of-a-bitch to the actors and saw how disrespectful he was of the show’s history. Julie Chen should send him a thank-you note.
Just has Ellen Wheeler will be known forever the woman who killed GL. And we should blame P&G and CBS for slowly bleeding these shows to death. Heaven help the other soaps if they get these two. ATWT was known to be a character driven show, they seam to have forgotten that. I hope they can get on to were they are treated better.

"How Not To Wreck a Show"
1. Watch the show.
2. Learn the history of the show. You would be surprised at the ideas that you can get from the back story of your characters.
3. Read the fan mail. The very characters that are not thrilling to you may be the audience's favorites.
4. Be objective. Put your own personal likes and dislikes aside and develop the characters that the audience wants to see.
5. Talk to everyone; writers and actors especially. There may be something in a character's history that will work beautifully for you, and who would know better than the actor who has been playing the role?
6. Don't change a core character. You can certainly give them edges they didn't have before, or give them a logical reason to change their behavior. But when the audience says, "He would never do that," then you have failed.
7. Build new characters slowly. Everyone knows that it takes six months to a year for an audience to care about a new character. Tie them in to existing characters. Don't shove them down the viewers' throats.
8. If you feel staff changes are in order, look within the organization first. P&G (Procter & Gamble) does a lot of promoting from within. Almost all of our producers worked their way up from staff positions, and that means they know the show.
9.Don't fire anyone for six months. I feel very deeply that you should look at the show's canvas before you do anything.
10.Good soap opera is good storytelling. It's very simple.
