Y&R Casts Luke Kleintank As Noah Newman

According to Soap Opera Digest, Luke Kleintank will take over the role of The Young and the Restless' Noah Newman. As previously reported by Daytime Confidential last month, Kevin G. Schmidt announced via twitter he was no longer in the role. An online rumor speculated, but was quickly dashed, that former General Hospital star Drew Garrett would step in and take on the role.

With Y&R SORAS'ing the characters of Noah and Abby Newman (Marcy Rylan), will they follow suit with Kyle Abbott once Diane Jenkins, soon-to-be-played by Maura West, hits Genoa City? *HINT, HINT Maria!* Kleintank makes his debut on Sept 21.

I am glad to see they are bringing the character back. Has anyone heard whether they are killing the character of Chance off Y&R?

He's a cutie pie, that's for sure!!! He still looks YOUNGER than Marcy Rylan's Abby, even though Noah IS older on the show!! This kid is 20 years old, according to Wikipedia. More playing fast and loose with history, but I shall overlook this latest discrepancy as long as we don't have another Yvonne Zima situation on our hands---a horrific actor who gets shoved down our throats!!!!At least he's not a 40-year old man, which is what I FULLY expected from Mama Bell and Paulie R. Holding my breath, crossing my toesies and hoping for the best!!!!

P.S-- I REALLY wish they'd have cast Drew Garrett as NuNoah. That would've been the PERFECT way to bring over some GH viewers and to appease all the Drew Garrett fans who are aching to see him on another soap opera!!! And Drew is a WONDERFUL actor who totally got screwed over by GH--- UNNECESSARILY. I guess this is to be expected from a show that has thrown away so many talented actors in the past few years!!! Again, I hope this kid can act!!!

Well, he certainly exudes that entitled blank look of douchebaggery that Josh Morrow has nearly perfected -- when he isn't sleepwalking through his scenes. This kid should fit right in as a Newman.

I guess Sharon and Nick (and the rest of the gang) is going to constantly start talking about Noah now? I always wondered why there wasn't a mention that Noah knows Sharon has Faith back.

Why this show continues to hire new actors is beyond me. They hardly can write a decent story for the ones they already have.

That being said Mr. Kleintank is easy on the eyes.

Now just bring back Lauren's son, Scotty and put him in a relationship with one of Sheila's daughters (Mary, or Diana).

Scout,

Bless your heart! You had me in stiches!!

Um, just how old is Noah supposed to be now? Look, Sharon and Nick are supposed to be in the mid-30s. If they have a 20-something kid, won't that push them into their 40s? Won't that make Victoria mid-40s instead of late 30s?

As for the actor, he does have Sharon Case's eyes. He's handsome. I wonder with whom he'll be paired as a romantic partner?

Frankly, I would have preferred a returned Kyle Abbott instead of a new Noah. I liked the last Noah. I wonder how they'll explain Eden's lack of return from France?

I think at this point with Y&R's cast about to push the seams of the show out with so many actors/actresses, they may just decide to not recast Eden. She really was a non-essential character in Genoa City. The only reason she came on to the show was to eventually usher in her bio dad, River as played by Michael Gross, who's stint on Y&R was very short lived and it made me wonder why they even bothered to cast the role in the first place. Michael Gross obviously didn't like working at Y&R and I think he left on his own accord. What I'm thinking is that once Noah returns and he's asked about Eden, he'll eventually let his parents, Michael and Lauren know that Eden went back to the Ashram for good, which would then usher the character off canvas for good.

Here's who I strongly, strongly believe that the show needs to get rid of:

Bryton James (Devon)
Darius McCrary (Malcolm)
Julie Pace Mitchell (Sofia) (have the last two get married and take off for parts unknown)
Tatiana Ali (is that how her name is spelled?) (Roxanne)
Judith Chapman (Gloria)
Ted Shackleford (Jeffrey)
(The last two are so one-dimensional, that they're not worth having around, so burn Gloworm down, have them busted for arson and trying to collect on the insurance money and those two carted off to prison to never be seen again)
Emily O'Brien (Jana Fisher) (she's done so much damage to Kevin and his family that there's no reason to keep her around)
Clementine Ford (Mac) (We all know why she should be let go from the show)
Amelia Heinle (Victoria Newman) (The show needs to recast this role with a much stronger actress)
Eden Reigel (Heather Stevens) (Recast this role with a much stronger actress.......Eden isn't doing it for me)

That pretty much sums up who I strongly believe needs to be given pink slips by MAB and Sony to free up a considerable amount of money to perhaps give some of their sets a huge makeover and or perhaps, give some of their other cast members big time pay raises (Billy Miller for one). Hmmmmm, I think I'm going to write MAB and let her know my thoughts AND for the show to get a brand new opening montage going here! Yeesh, when was the last time they updated that thing?!

Okay gang, below is the entire letter that I have written, printed off and enveloped and in my mailbox to go out in the mail today regarding the state of Y&R to Maria Arena Bell:

Thursday, August 12, 2010

Maria Arena Bell; Executive Producer/Head Writer
The Young and the Restless
C/O CBS-TV
7800 Beverly Boulevard
Los Angeles, CA 90036

Dear Maria,
I wanted to write this letter to you personally because it involves mostly about the current cast that the show has. My (and probably hundreds of thousands of other fans) question is why do you continue to hire new actors/actresses when you barely use the current cast you have? Here is what I wrote on daytimeconfidential.com as we were discussing your recent hiring of Luke Kleintank ( a bit young too be playing the role of Noah since Noah is to be older than Abby and this guy is only 20!) as Noah Newman.
These are current cast members that you could easily get rid of and free up some money for the show:
I think at this point with Y&R's cast about to push the seams of the show out with so many actors/actresses, they may just decide to not recast Eden. She really was a non-essential character in Genoa City. Here's who I strongly, strongly believe that the show needs to get rid of:
Bryton James (Devon)
Darius McCrary (Malcolm) (Sorry, but fans are still not happy with this casting decision)
Clementine Ford (Mac) (We all know why she should be let go from the show……she can’t act to save her life)
Amelia Heinle (Victoria Newman) (The show needs to recast this role with a much stronger actress. I like Amelia, but in the last couple of years, it seems as if Amelia has been phoning it in when it comes to her acting)
Eden Reigel (Heather Stevens) (Recast this role with a much stronger and edgier actress.......Eden isn't doing it for me)
That pretty much sums up who I strongly believe needs to be given pink slips by you Maria to free up a considerable amount of money to perhaps give some of their sets a huge makeover and or perhaps, give some of their other cast members big time pay raises (Billy Miller for one, he has been carrying this show on his back). When was the last time that the show’s opening montage was updated?! It is time to update it! Get it done already!
Lastly Maria, fans including myself are not impressed at all with your writing team. The writing has been well below par and not in keeping with the late Bill Bell Sr.’s way of writing stories. Is it any wonder why you continue to lose fans every week? I’m sure that Mr. Bell has to be rolling over in his grave and your Mother-in-law, Lee Phillip Bell has got to be chomping at the bit to tell you to cut it out with some of the dumb writing and casting you’ve done lately. Let me put it this way; you’re getting dangerously close to what happened with what Lynn Marie Latham had almost done, killed the show. I am just glad that Sony had the presence of mind to fire her during the writer’s strike when she was supposed to be EP’ing the show and not be on the picket line with the rest of the writing team. I really don’t want you turning into Ellen Wheeler (gads, she was awful as EP at GL). If you continue at the rate that you’re going Maria, Y&R will sink faster than the Titanic.

Sincerely,

Michael A. Teale (Long time fan of the show since the early 1980’s)

Yikes, get rid of all the black people? I agree that they're not being given great storylines right now but damn I wouldn't get rid of them! Recast Malcolm, keep Sophia, keep Devon and Roxanne but give them something to do with the new Noah and/or Abby or other young people...the separation of many of the black characters on this show from everyone else drives me to distraction.

Does the actress who plays Olivia even continue to be on Y & R? and I have to say that Tatyana Ali, who can act up a storm, is completely wasted on this show. This actress could leave Lily in the dust.

Thank you reggyreg for your comment! I was thinking that as I read this list. Reads a bit like an ethnic cleanse.

Onto the casting news - we shall see. I feel like TPTB are throwing spaghetti at the wall hoping it sticks. Very crazed.

The new Noah does look quite fetching at first blush. He actually looks like he could be Nick's more evolved son. Lets hope that the "father" did not pass down his "acting" genes. The former Noah was a year or two older than this guy but I don't think we should worry too much about real age versus character age unless it is completely out of line.

The topic of this thread is supposed to be the new Noah Newman, but I am so GLAD that it has strayed into the area of diversity. Y & R is getting on my last nerve. All My Children is really the only soap left that is doing justice to its minority characters. Over the past year or so, Y & R's writers have written nothing of interest for theirs.

The dialogue has been extremely painful at times. Absolutely no thought went into their casting of Darius McCrary as Malcolm. I get the impression that the thinking was "He's black so he'll do." Kristoff St. John has been spinning his wheels as the Greek chorus in another Cane/Lily storyline. Bryton McClure and Tatyana Ali, two of Daytime's best younger actors, do not get a chance to show their talents. Etc. Etc.

Are we still in the back of the bus as far as TPTB are concerned?

Let me say first off, I am a fan of diversity. The only reason I would get rid of those actors and the characters that they play is because they just aren't being used to the full potential. Obviously, MAB certainly is not giving them decent storylines, so why bother keeping them around? For crying out loud, I'm openly gay and having said that, I believe in diversity. But when actors/actresses have and are not being used to their full potential in a storyline, what's the use of keeping them around.

As for Malcolm, yes, they need to recast that role with someone else who is much older than Darius McCrary. While Darius is a good actor, he's not great either. Which is why I say, get rid of him as well as Sofia. However, if they decide to keep those two characters around, they just need to recast the role of Malcolm.

As for Devon, he really has not had much of anything to do since his controversial storyline in which he slept with Neil's fiancee. That was a big mistake on MAB's part and it basically ruined the character of Tyra. Now, if Tyra had been played by any other actress than Eva Marcille (I think that was her name) and that other actress had better acting chops than Eva did, that storyline would have had much more gas in the tank than it did. As for Roxanne, the actress who plays her Tatianna Ali, she really hasn't had much of a storyline since the Devon/Tyra storyline and has really just been a wallflower whenever the show needs her, which is waste of her talent. As for the actor who plays Devon, Bryton James, he's good actor, but not a great actor. I still can't see how he managed to win an Emmy for Younger Actor several years ago, just like I can't see how in hell Drew Tyler Bell (Thomas, B&B) won the Younger Actor Emmy this year. Drew Garrett was robbed big time! But that's a whole nother subject all together and I know that that subject has been beaten to death already this summer.

On topic, the nuNoah is a cutie and definitely looks like he could be Nick's son. From a purely shallow, asthetic point-of-view, I am pleased. I just hope the kid can at least pretend to act.

Off topic, I really, really hate it when people write letters presuming to speak for all of us fans. I don't happen to agree that Devon and the Winters should be written off the show. I like nuMalcolm so far and I also like Sofia. The problem with the letter is that the blame of what's not working in these stories is attributed to the actors, rather than to the writing. Y&R has, in my opinion, the most talented ensemble cast in daytime and having watched a plethora of other soaps over the past decades, I would argue that they've held this distinction for years now.

PS: MAB doesn't have to worry about whether she'll "turn into" Ellen Wheeler. It's too late - she's already there. Personally, I wish the soap bloggers had waited to see what kind of writer she was before hailing her as the second-coming of the soap world. Too late now. The damage is done.

On topic - nuNoah has a great look, but I can't see him as being any older than the previous Noah. Wonder if they plan to SOARAS him at all?

Off topic - As of late, I have joined the camp that if you don't want to use them, let them go. Tatyana Ali is a great actress and I would fully support her in finding other jobs...it's a shame that it is hard to find acting jobs when you are a black female

Bryton is a great actor and was brilliant in the cochlear implant storyline and the initial adoption story. That said, if Y&R won't write for him, he needs to find someone that does.

Same goes for all of them. But I am not a Pollyanna. I realize that once they leave Y&R you may never see them again. Daytime is just a fraction of the problem. It is hard for minority actors to get roles in non-stereotypical shows in just about every medium. When I see one, I support them, but I don't support mess just because they are AA either. I really wish that the power players in Hollywood provided more opportunities. We have Spike Lee and Tyler Perry people. That is all.

I'm going to say firstly, that being gay doesn't necessarily mean you are pro-diversity. It is possible to be a gay racist, or a gay person who has a low, bigoted opinion of black people. This is well known. I'm tired of people acting like being gay somehow inoculates you from being a racist.

I think the fact that these characters (primarily the black family on this soap for years) are singled out as "not contributing" when we all KNOW that it is a direction that TPTB has chosen is pretty crappy. One could argue that any number of white characters has been poorly used YET we don't read letters saying they should all be thrown off the show.

I'm just looking for balance and I don't see it in the show currently. And I definitely think that those AA actors should be looking out for number one, as the show really isn't working for them.

I also agree that there is NO reason to get rid of Malcolm and/or Sophia. People STILL seem to be penalizing Darius McCrary for NOT being Shemar Moore---a fact that I am sure he had absolutely NO control over at birth. I am growing to accept him as Malcolm, despite the fact that Malcolm was ORIGINALLY conceived by the writers to be a mulatto male, and McCrary, as we all know, is NOT. I choose not to penalize him for Ma Bell's "snatch and go, fly by the seat of our pants, forget about biology" casting errors.

MY list of characters that need to kick rocks???

NuHeather-- Still not feeling the divine Mrs. Riegel in this role. Would recommend her returning to Pine Valley, but I am starting to like Christina Lind as Bianca.

Cricket-- NEVER have liked this self-righteous bug, and although she's not nearly as sanctimoniously dull as she used to be, she's still a dead weight character in my opinion. Without Danny around, who really needs her??? Also not in the mood for another Cricket/Paul union.

Jana- Without Ryder, she's duller than dishwater. Kevin belongs with Chloe now. Let's leave the past in the past.

JT/Mac-- JT's a schmuck and Mac is a terminal bore!! Send them to Haiti to help the needy, and tell them not to leave a forwarding address!!!!

Cane and Lily--- Do I REALLY need to explain this????
Lily is actually an integral part of the cast, but they need to find a new actress to play Lily. And NO I don't mean Davetta Sherwood.............didn't care for her either.

Skye---The actress who plays Skye would have been the PERFECT Heather recast. WHY did they bring on this ridiculous cartoon wife for Adam??

Nickclueless Newman-- STOP GASPING, FOLKS. I don't mean get rid of him PERMANENTLY....just for a few months. Let Sharon and Phyllis move on with OTHER men, and then bring him back to sit in the corner and sulk as he sees the LOVES of his life happy with REAL men!!!!

As an African American I agree with matealestlmo about getting rid of Devon, Malcolm, Sophia, and Roxi. It's clear that MAB has no plans to write for the black actors except for Lily. I don't think they should stick around for that nonsense. I never thought I would see the day that Neil and Malcolm would just be some supporting characters to Lily. Hell if MAB got rid of them it's not like we would even notice. She doesn't use them. I personally don't want to see Malcolm/Neil fight over ANOTHER woman. Been there and done that. Think of something creative for the Winters family.

Off topic ... it's good to see that some major players here are starting the accept the new Malcolm. Now maybe St. Shemar can start fading from your barn doors or Lay's Potato Chips.

EduBois ... it is quite true that being gay does not make you any different from others except for that part. But if you are trying to stir something up then be warned that you really will not win.

alstonboy ... I certainly agree with all of your other casting points.

(I was wondering ... with all the reboots of 60's television I wonder if Jeanne Cooper will reboot her prime time career as a guest star?)

Recast Malcolm,Victoria(with Heather Tom), Heather and Mac. Fire the actors who play gloria, Jeff,Victoria ,Jana, Meggie. Bring back Tracy, Diane Jenkins( with Alex Donnelly), and Nate jr. Give Devon and Roxanne a story! Also, Nikki needs to be front and center.
