Stunt Casting and the Restless: "Cindy Brady" Comes to Genoa City
By Jenna Dorsi on July 23, 2010

Entertainment Weekly is reporting Susan Olsen, who played lovable, lisping tyke Cindy on The Brady Bunch, will make a guest appearance on The Young and the Restless this Sept. 1. Olsen will play pre-school teacher Liza Morton, who welcomes Delia Abbott and Reed Helstrom into her class.

What's the point of this?

There IS not point, Smtty. While soaps have always stunt cast, when your show is in the creative toilet, the last thing you need to be worried about is how many "made you look" castings you can accomplish. I don't understand why Barbara Bloom is allowing Maria Arena Bell to turn this once, great soap opera into a huge joke.

Another C-list actor who mainstream America FORGOT about decades ago???!!!! Lord, I pray again for strength and patience!!!

I see no problem with this. I doubt it was done as a casting stunt. "Cindy" will come and go before anyone knows it. I think the actress should be cut some slack. She is just trying to make a living. I agree that the show, however, is far from at its best right now.

Well, why not bring on Dustin Diamond(Screech) on Y&R then? Or wait until Lindsay Lohan gets out of rehab and hired her on Y&R then?

Siomonstuart--
LOL!! Dustin Diamond would be PERFECT on Y&R right now, actually...he has a sex tape, Abby is always taking off her clothes..match made in heaven!!! Perhaps he can give her some tips???
At least Dustin Diamond is funny and entertaining. I might actually enjoy seeing him in a FEW episodes, as long as they have him playing a Hugh Hefner type of character!!
LiLo in Genoa City??? Don't put it past Ma Bell. She would probably recast her as NuCassie in a HEARTBEAT, as another poster on this site pointed out:
Maria to Paul Rauch: "Cassie doesn't have to REALLY be dead, does she?"
Paul Rauch gets a demented glint in his eye.
(Sigh and groan!)

miamibeachguy, there is nothing wrong with Susan trying to make a living. Folks are just not feeling the stunt casting Y&R's been doing lately. Think back to all the people they've brought on and you will see what folks mean.

As a viewer i look back on the previous stunt casting, and with the exception of Vance Abrahms - so far I feel like they are channeling energy to write story JUST to put these C-listers in a storyline, instead of incorporating them on an as-needed basis. Where a show like B&B does have "guest stars" or "past stars" but they incorporate them very well, like Patrick Duffy-Mills-White. Good for Susan Olsen though...she was in the right place at the right time.

I didn't even know that they sorased Delia.

There's no question that the show is much improved as compared to four months ago, but I'm never going to feel safe about its sustained quality as long as the same stunt-loving people are writing and producing it.

Ratings and attention that's what Y&R are doing now. I wish they stop doing this revolving door people and keep the original cast members, and don't follow down the same path as ATWT and GL, as Y&R is heading.

In Y&R's defense, I have to say, they really do use their cast. (With the exception of Tatiana) I agree the ins and outs of these "somebodys" are a little monotonous but it's not like on Passions when we didn't see people for months and months.

I'm straining to see some sort of strategy (other than headline-grabbing) behind this and all I can come up with is the following:
Maybe the plan is to make Y & R a kind of primetime-in-daytime show. In primetime there are always guest stars popping in and out while core characters remain the same.

This type of casting just turns me off of the show- it does not attract me to watch. Jamey is right that MAB needs to be stopped or just fired- I was watching for a while, but have lost interest. I also did not realize Delia was old enough for pre-school -- better watch out or before you know it she will be giving her cousin Abby some competition in the
Daniel department! You may say that is a crazy notion, but Maria seems to thrive on such crazy ideas. I used to love this show--now I cannot bare to watch it anymore.

Baycity, you are definitely on to something there. I guess Maria wants this to be the LOVE BOAT or MURDER, SHE WROTE of the daytime!

Susan Olsen is cool. I loved Cindy Brady. Nothing against her at all. Y&R is still #1, I just don't get it with all the stunt casting lately.

Hey Siomon, they would only have to wait about 10 days and Lindsay Lohan will be out of jail and available.

They didn't. Another reason this is STUPID.

Just like all the other stunt casting, this will be picked up by mainstream media. Bottomline is that Y&R is running the same or ahead of last year in viewers. Dont know if this helps, but it hasnt hurt. Also, this "marketing" is no different than CSI and Justin Bieber; Community and Betty White; Grey's and all the guest patients last year, etc. It's the way you break out of clutter. I believe ABC even has a show totally devoted to these used-2-bes -- Dancing with the "Stars"

Stunt casting has been happening on soaps since Joan Crawford forced her way on to ATWT to sub for her ailing daughter.
Does anyone remember Bill Bell's greatest piece of stunt casting? When he talked a nighttime TV actor named Eric Braeden to do a short term role as a millionaire named Victor Newman.

Scout---
Stunt casting works when it's accompanied by great actors, well-developed characters and great stories. If both elements aren't firmly in place, it's gonna be a resounding flop and waste of money. And hiring someone just for a 15-minute stint of publicity is also an invitation for egg on the face. Just my humble opinion.

It's not that serious. She will be on and off within a blink of an eye. Actually, YandR has gotten BETTER over the past few weeks. At least in my opinion it has.

How is Cindy Brady playing a preschool teacher a big deal? Does she really have to be a well-developed character? Do we really need a backstory for a one day character? Was it a big deal when Tiffany sang Xmas carols to Kay & Murphy in '08?

Okay, perhaps I am being too melodramatic about this, but Y&R does need to cut back on the stunt casting and use that same "ingenuity" on working out the storyline kinks that are preventing the show from being the best it can be. Okay, I am OFFICIALLY off my soapbox for the night.

The soap was Search for Tomorrow not ATWT.

Is it really stunt casting? I mean did Maria Arena Bell actually seek her out or did the actress auditioned like everybody else and just happened to have gotten the role?

Boy, you guys must be running out of things to worry about. As a couple of others did mention, Susan Olsen probably was in the right place at the right time and just happened to get the job.
Scout's comment about Hans Gudgast being stunt cast short term originally was quite right on. Also, Dorothy McGuire (the screen legend) was cast as his mother and I bet no one wondered about that.
The rapid aging of Delia and Reed should not really surprise anyone. It is the norm for American daytime and can happen at any time. This is not Coronation Street in England where the kids actually do grow up (even if they sometimes change actors as they age).
I also agree with reggyreg that Y&R definitely appears to be on the upswing.
