Ron Hale Departs GH
By Jillian Bowe on July 10, 2010

In part four of We Love Soaps' interview with Ron Hale, the actor reveals to Damon L. Jacobs he will exit General Hospital.
We Love Soaps: What’s interesting to me is that characters on soaps do terrible things and are quickly forgiven all the time. Mike is still on the hook for abandoning Sonny as a child all these years later. Why is that?
Ron Hale: I can be honest about that. They haven’t touched on this for a long time. Mike has really been put in the background which I do understand to a certain extent. We Love Soaps: How do you understand it?
Ron Hale: I can’t totally go into it. But it’s the way the show is going, and that’s fine. It’s fine because I’m getting to the end of my long run in my own mind. Jill [Farren Phelps] knows this. I’m going to be moving on. Not tomorrow or anything. But I’ve had a great run there, and I’m ready to leave Southern California. I’ve gotta go find me a farm somewhere.

It's such a shame that GH doesn't give their "older" actors active storylines or the respect they deserve! Like Mike, Edward, Moncia, Bobbie, Leslie and so many others. I wish him happiness and success in all his future endeavors!!!

I hope he tells tiic to suck it and say peace out, LOL. But he too much of a class act to do such a thing.

The character of Mike has been a monumental waste of Ron Hale's talent. Godspeed, Ron Hale!

Yeah, I don't recall ANY storyline that Mike has been prominently featured in since Courtney died. Sad. With NO story to speak of and the "pleasure" of being shown maybe twice every six months, what incentive do veterans like Leslie Charleson, Jacklyn Zeman and other actors who have simply been given the title "recurring" stars, without pointing out the fact that they recur so infrequently that they may as well be billed "guest stars," have to resign with this show??? A meager amount of work is better than no work at all?? Yeah, Guza and Phelps, way to show respect for the stars who helped put the show on top back in the late 70s and early 80s!!!
BTW: I may be wrong here.....maybe Jackie Zeman, Leslie Charleson, John Ingle and the other veteran stars are PERFECTLY HAPPY only being on once every few months, but I doubt it. Jane Elliott commented after Anna Lee's passing that she was always wanting to work more and lamenting her lack of airtime, even up until her last days.
Good luck in your future endeavors, Mr. Hale.

TPTB at GH should look to DOOL for inspiration. Days is writing some fantastically entertaining material for their "senior" canvas, i.e. Maggie, Victor, Vivian and even Caroline lately, as she is getting sucked into the Maggie/Victor connection. It just goes to show that you CAN write interesting, romantic material for actors who are over 50.

Maybe Days can pick Ron up, as a love interest to Caroline or Vivian.

He'll always be Roger Coleridge from Ryan's Hope, first and foremost.
They should do a couple of those "What If?" webisodes with the vets, and see how many "hits" they get. Then, they'll have a good idea of how much their vets are valued.
I'd love to see Mike Corbin teamed up with OLTL's Roxy Balsom (Ilene Kristen)...together again for the first time!

Can't say I didn't see this coming, because honestly when was the last time Mike was even on, much less had a significant part in a story? such a shame though because I think Ron Hale is a really good actor and I thought Mike and Sonny's relationship was really interesting and complex when RH first came on the show. But then, GH as a whole was more interesting and complex back then.
It's a shame that GH can't use it's veteran cast who can still act, especially when they keep doing stunt casting and adding newbies. It's not about age, imo. It's about good writing and fans would be interested in stories involving vets if they were just written well.

The way I read it he WILL depart at some point in the future:
We Love Soaps: How do you understand it?
Ron Hale: I can’t totally go into it. But it’s the way the show is going, and that’s fine. It’s fine because I’m getting to the end of my long run in my own mind. Jill [Farren Phelps] knows this. I'm kind of surprised GH never tried a Monica/Mike romance--Sonny's dad dating Jason's Mom would be dramatic. But then, I guess, they'd be forced to actually let Monica and Mike have a storyline, and we know they can't do that! */sarcasm* Anyway, I always loved Mike, and maybe they'll at least give him a dramatic exit story?

It sounds to me as though he simply means he won't re-negotiate when his contract comes up for renewal (although, if he has a contract, that would surprise me, considering how little he is used).

Hate to say it, but I am not surprised, he hasn't had a storyline for years. I agree they should've explore a Monica/Mike pairing. I wish Ron good luck, hopefully another soap will snap him up.

Mike and Monica romance could have been so amazing......
I hate that GH does not use their veterans actors much.. This is stupid, GH have amazing amazing actors that are over 50, that are just talented, they can do stories that will have younger and older cast... i look at other soaps and I see how much their older cast is involve....UGHHHHHHHH
Anyway when he will leave I wish him luck.. I know he will do fine

It seems like right now, with all the problems Sonny is having with his children that it would make sense for Mike to be back on the air, shedding some light on what all Sonny went through OR agreeing with his grandchildren. Great actor. He's been wasted.
