Remembering DAYS' Alice Horton

On Friday’s tearful episode of Days of our Lives Salem’s residents said goodbye to Alice Horton (Frances Reid) as she was laid to rest. The scenes, which brought back many familiar faces and fan favorites, featured flashbacks of Alice with her beloved husband Tom Horton (Macdonald Carey) as well as other pivotal DAYS’ characters. I must admit all the flashbacks had me heading for YouTube to find even more. I couldn’t help but get a bit misty-eyed as her loved ones each shared what she meant to them before placing flowers on her casket. Rest in peace Alice, Salem won’t be the same without you.

Share your favorite Alice Horton memories in the comments and see screencaps from Friday's episode after the jump.

I haven't seen today's episode yet but all the episodes dealing with this up to now have been great and rich and full of history so I am sure this one will be a keeper and a 4 hankie.

To see Alice and Tom again....it will bring a tear to my eye.
I know I am not the only fan who if allowed to have had a 3rd set of grandparents you would have wanted it to be Tom and Alice.

Thank you to the cast especially Suzanne Rogers, Susan Seaforth-Hayes, Melissa Reeves, and Kristian Alfonso...also the actor playing Bill...can't remember his name but I remember him on OLTL.

Thank you to Dena, Chris, Gary, and Tom as well.

My favorite memories of Alice? Nothing in particular. Just her being always being THERE - for advice, gatherings, the Christmas ornament hanging. I have watched Days since 1988 and Alice really never had her own storyline. I do remember though during the Hope/Gina "Is she or isn't she?" story when Alice never gave up on Gina being Hope and there was all the business with the puzzle box that only Hope and Tom knew how to open. That was good stuff kids.

Thank you Ms. Frances Reid.
We will not forget you.
xo

I just had a thought....would have been too much if they had done like AMC did with Dixie for Palmer's memorial and if they had John Clarke (Mickey) and Patricia Barry (Addie) swing open a door and say something like "Hi Mom. Dad's waiting for you."

Oh my god...tears me up just thinking about it.

My favorite memory of Alice didnt technically "happen" since it was a dream. But when Jack drempt of his wedding to Jennifer it took place in a rodeo arena. In this dream Alice decked a guy and then started fighting. I absolutely to this day still laugh out loud in enjoyment.

I agree Ryan-Scott. I was really hoping for a guest appearance by John Clarke. At least he was in the montage that they played at the end.

Grandma Horton was always there, despensing, cookies, tree ornaments, and sound advice. She was such a key part of Bo and Hope's romance including breaking the law to help them out. One favorite is hearing Tom and Alice's song "Always". They were always so sweet with eachother.
Perhaps my very favorite scene of hers is her first death when Marlena "killed" her. It was so shocking and unexpected.

It was pulled off well! Everyone did a great job bidding farewell to Alice. Hope, Lucas, and Mike brought the tears for me. Thank you Days for giving Salem's matriarch the tribute she deserved.

Katiebug, I remember that scene too LOL I remember being so excited for Jack and Jennifer's wedding, didn't Jack wake up from his dream screaming out "Miss Horton!" after he had lost his voice for a week or so before the wedding? He called Jennifer Miss Horton for a while, I can't really remember why. God I loved those two. And seeing all of these Horton family and friends come back has been bittersweet for me, because it made me realize that the only Hortons left on the show (regularly) are Maggie, Hope and Nathan Sad The show really needs to rebuild its Horton family. I really miss Lucas in particular, and this new guy as Bill was pretty decent too. Bringing back Lucas and his father could add a new dynamic to the whole Kate/Stefano relationship. And sorry to all the Ejami fans but I still miss Sami and Lucas as a couple.

I think DOOL needs to get rid of some of its current characters, Daniel for one. He's useless, the actor isn't that great, and I don't care much for the character either. Along with Daniel, they could get rid of Ari and Gabbi for all I care. I still like Rafe, but his sisters are just plain ol' boring. They could get rid of these three and bring back Bill, Laura and Lucas.

I used to watch Days way back in the 80's and I named my daughter after Jessica Horton.

Does anyone know who played that character on the show? I'd love to see what she looks like now.

I always loved Alice and Tom. They were the grandparents I wished I'd had!

Ryan-Scott, I've also been watching Days since 1988 or 89. I would have been about five years old. The only way I can measure is that I remember when Kayla went deaf and when Harper Devereux tried to push Kim and a still deaf Kayla off a high-rise.
Losing Alice is almost like losing a family member. Very nostalgic and sad. I really have enjoyed seeing Laura, Jennifer, Kimberly, Kayla, and Shane, among others, back. I never knew Marie, but I still have loved seeing her. All of it reminds me of the good old Days before they constantly focused on Nicole, Daniel, Chloe, and Phillip.

Alice Horton/Frances Reid were and are the heart and soul of DAYS. I watched her funeral today, and DAYS really pulled out all the stops to make sure that it was truly the EVENT that it needed to be, not just one episode. The flashbacks that they've been showing really highlight how versatile and spunky Frances was. She was truly a class act in every sense of the word. Frances deserves all the respect and attention that she's receiving. May she rest in peace!!!!!!!!!

If there is an episode Days should nominate for next year's Emmy's it is this one. That wasn't just acting they were doing, there was true emotion on display. Kristian and Suzanne and Susan and Melissa especially stood out. Days did it right. If that was the show's last episode, I would have been satisfied. As the World Turns top that!

I liked that the actual church funeral occurred offscreen. It allows us to assume that Marlena, John, Jack, Abby, Sarah, David, Scott, Sandy, Jessica, Joshua, Nick, Jeremy, etc. all attended the service. Not everyone that attends the funeral attends the internment---many head back for the reception at that time. Leaving something up to the imagination was better than showing too much, like at Grampa Shawn's funeral...were we really supposed to believe Frankie, Carrie, Andrew, Jeannie, and Eric wouldn't attend his funeral? At least this way we can imagine that important people like Marlena and Jack attended. So I liked that part.

Hope, Melissa, and Lucas gave the most moving speeches. Even little Ciara was moving. I teared up when Kim saw Shane, blinked, and then he was gone. I also liked the insinuation that Melissa is sticking around Salem indefinitely.

I wish Marie had spoken instead of Nathan. Nathan and Alice never interacted on screen and we know that. It sounded out of place given Mark Hapka has no history with Frances Reid.

The montage was good but could've been longer, and could've been intercut with some flashbacks with dialogue. But I liked that they ended the montage with Alice speaking to Tom.

And isn't Carrie gorgeous? My God, she's stunning! Sign her to a contract, stat!!

Overall, I'd score the funeral an A- and the buildup to the funeral an A.

Unfortunately, I found no reason to continue watching Days once the returnees leave (I no longer watch DAYS, I just DVRed it for the Alice tribute this month).

Jessica was played by Jean Bruce Scott. Apparently she's still very active in acting today. Give her a google!

I don't have a particular favourite Alice Horton memory that stands out because I just always loved the scenes where she advised and supported her family, especially Lucas.

However, I really did love the important role in discovering Marlena was the Salem Stalker. Especially when Marlena walked through the door of the Horton house and Alice was waiting for her. So intense!

Actually, a great Alice moment in that vein was when Marlena arrived on Tony's island and Alice was there to greet her, alive and well.

It was such a great episode yesterday. I DVRed it and watched it last night. Didn't get very emotional until they showed the clip montage and everyone was crying in that scene toward the end. I almost teared up then. The scene was very real. Too bad some of these characters can't stick around. I get tired of the ones currently featured, with the exception of Bo and Hope and Carly and Vivian.
