Y&R's Peter Bergman on How Second Doppelganger Story Undermines Stacy Haiduk
By Jamey Giddens on April 26, 2010

TV Guide Magazine's Michael Logan sat down with Peter Bergman to discuss his character Jack Abbott finally catching a clue about Patty (Stacy Haiduk) pretending to be Emily (also Stacy Haiduk) next week on The Young and the Restless (Would that TPTB catch one). Apparently fans of the sudser aren't the only ones who believe adding a second lookalike storyline was beyond overkill.

This is the second nip/tuck lookalike plot on Y&R right now.It has never been my favorite plot device but to the ever-loving credit of Stacy Haiduk [Patty/Emily] she has made it absolutely winning. She has gone to every limit, and has been incredibly brave. I think she has been strongly undermined by having a second character in Genoa City with the same kind of plastic surgery, and this is no reflection on Tracey Bregman [who plays doppelgangers Lauren and Sarah]. I perhaps flatter myself but I think the audience did roll with the Patty/Emily story. Then we had to sully it by trying it a second time.

Right on, Peter, right on. They "sullied" it alright.

So glad that one of the actor's has the honesty to admit a problem in the storyline. I agree that Stacy Haiduk has really been making the most of the mess she has been given. I am afraid that with the way the story is going we will be losing Stacy in the end, and I have really enjoyed her performance on the show.

YR is just unspeakably and embarrassingly awful right now to the point of unrecognizability.
It's currently the most unwatchable soap and that's saying something.

I agree with him that the double doppelganger undermined Patty/Emily's story, but to be honest the first doppelganger story was a stretch on it's own. Stacy Haiduk is working her tail off to sell it, but the whole switch and hair dying in the padded cell was too much to believe.
Then Jack looks like a complete idiot or the most selfish lover that has ever existed to not notice a difference between Patty and Emily in bed. Previously he had been sleeping with Patty as MJ and then sleeps with Emily and then starts sleeping with Patty in the guise of Emily and he doesn't notice anything?
I like Stacey Haiduk, but her storyline along with much of Adam's has brought us to the plot contrived peak and the Lauren doppelganger knocked it over the cliff and into a creative free fall. I don't know if they will keep Stacy on the show because Patty was interesting while Emily was a complete bore, but they need to end the Patty and Sarah doppelganger stories soon (and it does seem to be wrapping up quickly) and then not bring Adam back and then maybe MAB will come to her senses and try to write some character driven stories.

Peter Bergman is a smart guy. This was a good interview. Poor Stacy...still laughing over that "bless the dopplegangers" post last week hahaha

Truer words have never ben spoken. As bad as Y&R has been as of late (and it has been God awful!) Stacy Haiduk has been the one bright spot. As others have said, it is a big stretch that Jack has not realized a difference, but Stacy has been so good that it was possible to supend that belief for a while. Bringing in the second double in an utterly stupid story line has been extremely detramental to Stacy and her Patty/Emily/Mary Jane story. Kudos to Peter for having the stones to tell it like it is.

PB was being kind. But I don't work there, so I can say it: bringing in a simultaneous doppelganger storyline - a year after Katherine/Marge - is the most asinine, sophomoric, show-killing, career-killing tricks I've ever seen on daytime tv. (Actually, I didn't even think that Stacy Haiduk's doppelganger story was working all that well either, but I digress.)
This is even WORSE than Reva being cloned or showing up as an Amish woman named Rebekah.
And I didn't think anything could get any sillier than that.

Actually, Jack slept with this woman as three different people: with Patty when she was indeed Patty years ago, with Patty pretending to be Mary Jane, and finally with Patty pretending to be Emily. Enough times for the man to at least have gotten a clue months ago.....The whole thing has turned a once good soap into a great big joke...

Peter Bergman is a smart cookie who has been around the block. He CLEARLY ain't nobody's fool!!! He can tell plot-driven foolishness when he sees it. Remember, this man has been privileged to be under the care of TWO legendary storytellers during his daytime career---Agnes Nixon (from his days on AMC) and William Bell Sr. Neither of these writers relied on plot twists, gimmicks, evil twins or shock value to sell storylines or to promote viewership. Maria Bell, like Lynn Latham, is trying to reinvent the wheel, and is currently producing disasterous results.
I am not going to declare Maria Bell a COMPLETE hack (which is essentially what Lynn Latham was!!), but she needs to jump in her time machine and travel back to Genoa City, circa 2008, and get back to the type of stories that endeared her to the audience in the first place. I can't say it enough, but yet I feel remiss in NOT reiterating it. Good stories and good characters tell themselves.
Like Agnes Nixon always says, "Follow the characters!"
With guilt, I await the day when Stacy Haiduk is done having to play this foolishness. I realize that this will undoubtedly mean the end of her stint on Y&R, but if it would help get this show back on track, losing this actress would be a small price to pay.

If they don't start listening to fans or even their own people; it doesn't have a chance. Just becoming a crapfest. I have no other words for it.

On a seperate note, I hope TPTB don't decide to punish Bergman for "being opinionated" about the stories that are going on over there. Kristoff St. John spoke his mind, and now he's in storyline Siberia!! Maria and Paul have proven again and again how little they value the input of actors regarding stories. "Shut up and color!!" seems to be their silent catchphrase. All who don't comply be damned!!!

I have a lot of respect for Peter Bergman and it's nice that he is praising Stacy Haiduk for her yeo(wo)man work in this role, but I can't say there was anything to be undermined. The Patty/Emily story was ridiculous from the beginning, and any tiny credibility it may have ever had was gone when Emily bedded the man only weeks before she was blaming for Patty's insanity. I would go as far as to say the story died months before Emily ever showed up, when Patty in no time at all, for no reason, went from being a successful businesswoman to sitting in the street picking through garbage. There's a good reason why a STUFFED CAT was more popular than Patty ever was.

I used to watch Y&R everyday while I was having my lunch, but the show is getting too ridiculous. Mary Jane/Patty and Lauren/what'shername are basically the same storyline. The only storyline I'm tuning in for anymore (which is surprising) is the Billy/Victoria connection. The rest of the show is crap.

Y&R is embarrasing and i'm pretty sure that the actors are fully aware of it.

I bet that Peter was encouraged to do this interview and that he is really speaking for tptb. They know their mistake and are correcting it. Sending Peter out was the first step in course correction. He is just and actor and therefore not responsible for the writing or direction of the show. So he makes a good spokesman to say ah shucks this wasn't a good idea.

Happy PB spoke out on the foolishness of the storyline. I just want it to hurry up and come to a close and bring back the smart Michael and Jack characters I use to love.

Yeah, Pure_Diva, that cloning storyline was one bitter pill to swallow, wasn't it? Hard to believe there's something worse.
Speaking of cats, you just know Emily's cat allergy will have something to do with how this all plays out, but if it takes a cat allergy to alert Jack that's he's been sexing up a completely different woman, then HE needs the psych ward!

I like Peter/Jack's remarks and am hoping for a return to the good old days of Y and R. I have been a viewer along with my wife for 27+ years. This is the only soap we have ever been interested in and until lately have always enjoyed it. Now, it is almost unwatchable and I find that to be, a real shame. Such a wonderful show, with a huge audience and now I see that last week they lost another 431,000 viewers.
That must mean that something is dreadfully wrong. They keep changing characters for no apparent reason and in my humble opinion they are not improving them. I see they are bringing in a bunch of old characters from the past, along with Sean Young, who I don't believe has done anything in this century. Instead of more actors, how about some decent writers? JMO>

This type of storytelling isn't what Y&R is known for. Not at all.
I hope this slop gets resolved during May Sweeps.
Peter hits it on the head. I have loved that little sweetie since he was Cliff on AMC back in the early 80s when I was watching AMC with my mom.
It goes without saying Jack Smith and Kay Alden should have never been shown the door. Never.

I understand that Jack discovers that Emily is Patty on Monday May 3, 2010. So thankfully that awful story line may go by the wayside by the end of that week. YEAH!
Now please hurry and end the other idiotic one with that hack Daisy involved. She has already proven that she cannot act. Give us all a break here.
