Ratings, Rants and Raves: When Did The Bell Soap Operas Become Twin Exercises in Hackery?

It's been a few weeks since I've done my Ratings, Rants and Raves column, because my fabulous trip to NYC put me behind on my soap watching, and while I am still catching up on my ABC soap viewing and DAYS (I chose to watch the Bell soaps first—big mistake, huge.), I can give you the ratings (courtesy of Soap Opera Network) if not so so much ranting or raving about ABC and NBC this time. Don't worry, I'll be back to normal next week!

So without further poo poo, One Life to Live proved to be the biggest ratings winner for the week of March 29-April 2, 2010. OLTL went up 67,000 total viewers and inched up one-tenth of a ratings point in households and among women 18-49. WATCH...eh, watch what you want. I won't use this platform to support or promote caving to bigots in any form or fashion, even if a million viewers tune back in. Next thing you know, "mainstream America" will be going after Jesse and Angie.

OLTL's sister soap All My Children also added total viewers over the previous week, inching up by 27,000. AMC held steady in households, tied with OLTL for 5th place, and also went up one-tenth of a ratings point among women 18-49. Not to be outdone, the now best soap opera on ABC Daytime's lineup (if not all of daytime), General Hospital added 38,000 total viewers over the previous week. GH was the only soap up among total viewers year-to-date. Looks like Sonny Knows Worst is really paying off for Mickey Mouse's flagship daytime drama. Kudos to Maurice Benard and all of the stellar actors who play his wives, lawyers, baby mamas, hitmen and kids— even the ones who are now jobless. Drew Garrett will laugh about this when he's picking up his Oscar one day. GH also went up one-tenth of a ratings point in households, and held steady among women 18-49 in the Number Two slot, only separated from The Young and the Ridiculous by three-tenths of a ratings point.

Since we've already gone there (sigh), let's move over to CBS, where daytime's top soap (chugs Sky Vodka from a coffee mug), Y&R lost 128,000 total viewers over the previous week. Y&R also went down one-tenth of a ratings point in households and among women 18-49. It will be interesting to see what the ratings will look like for Y&R after the absolutely shit-tastic week the serial just finished— which, as I mentioned, I am unfortunately caught up on. The reveal Friday that Mama Bear had Lauren Fenmore's (Tracey Bregman) sexylicious face was the most awful, asinine, insipid (opens up new browser menu for thesaurus.com), stinky mess I've seen on daytime in at least 10 years, and that's saying a lot.

We lambasted Lynn Marie Latham for, among other things, giving Sheila Carter, Phyllis's face, now Maria Arena Bell is doing not one, but TWO similarly dumbass, plot driven stories at the SAME TIME! Un-friggin-believable. Here's a little advice to Auntie Ri Ri, STOP mentioning your late, great daddy-in-law's name in those self-congratulatory interviews until you re-earn your surname and legacy by FIXING THIS DAMNED SOAP OPERA!

Y&R's equally awful kid sister, The Bold and the Beautiful shed 121,000 total viewers over the previous week. B&B also dropped one-tenth of a ratings point in households, tying its all-time low in that demographic. The once fun, smart-yet-campy sudser also fell among women 18-49—hitting a new record low. If Brad and his sister-in-law (or is she his twin?) aren't careful the name Bell is going to become synonymous with hackery, as opposed to brilliance, really, really soon.

As for As The World Turns, the canceled sudser shed 22,000 total viewers over the previous week. ATWT held steady in households, yet dropped a tenth of a ratings point among women 18-49. Meanwhile, according to Entertainment Weeky, Wayne Brady's Let's Make a Deal is bringing in 12 percent more viewers than Guiding Light was. If the quality and leadership of CBS's remaining soaps don't improve drastically, we will soon have a four-block Tiffany Network Lineup of regurgitated talk shows from the 70's, hosted by Q-list celebs from the 90's. Oh well, at least there won't be any evil twins, or teenage corporate raiders.

Yep, I'm like a dog with a bone about this, I won't let up until the Bells do, and they give us the rich, psychologically-resonant, CHARACTER driven soap operas their patriarch did for generations. LaToya is a Jackson too, but no one makes the mistake of comparing her to Michael or Janet—Miss Jackson if you Nasty— so I am beyond over comparisons of Maria and/or Brad to the late Bill Bell, until they once again prove they are worthy— on my TV, not in an interview where no one asks, "Why in high hell are you two writing so many awful, ridiculous storylines at the same time?" I wouldn't wipe my ass with a Bell Dramatic script right now for fear it would give me a rash of stupidity, which is SO frustrating because I know both can do much better, I've seen it. I've PRAISED it. Come on Bells, STEP UP! Make us love you again.

Last, but not least, comeback soap Days of Our Lives had a rough week, ratings-wise. DAYS lost 189,000 total viewers over the previous week. NBC's lone-yet recently renewed-sudser dropped one-tenth of a ratings point in households, yet held steady among women 18-49.

Finally the DC admits that Y&R is just atrocious. It's the worst soap opera on air. The actors might try to save it a bit, but when ALL of the stories suck, it can't happen. Stop trying to see the light in this show when it's obvious that MAB/Sheffer are pulling out these stories while sitting on the bathroom.

LML was a huge hack, but MAB is a thousand times worse.

I'm very pleased GH is up in the ratings too.  The Kristina storyline has been spot on and all the major players have truly been bring out great performance.

The problem with Days lately is the same ol people getting the same amount of airtime.  I personally do not care for the Ari and Nicole fighting over Brady, because it's a joke.  Ari vs Nicole, just no.  The show needs balance with their characters and also though the women are on the front lines of these storylines why can't they be strong and independent, then always weak willed and sloppy...

I can't wait for the Hope storyline (BETTER NOT BE ANYTHING STUPID), happy Kate and Stefano got frontburn most of this week please let that continue.  NuWill going off on Sami this week... THE BUSINESS!

And another thing why is all the residence of Salem always in the damn hospital lately!

Jamey, I agree about "General Hospital" being the best soap opera in daytime. I have felt for years that it deserved the #2 spot that has been occupied so many times by either "Days of our Lives" (which is usually more CARTOON than soap opera) or B&B, which is merely trodding along with recycled romances and storylines and not really doing anything REMOTELY innovative, new or intriguing. GH is the best written soap in daytime with the most complex characters and the best actors.

As far as Brad Bell's writing being "brilliant," I don't know if I agree with that. He has done GOOD work, from what I've seen, but I would hardly place him in the same category as a Douglas Marland, Lorraine Broderick, Wisner Washam, Agnes Nixon or his father, William Bell Sr. I think that Brad has been running out of good ideas for a LONG time, and creatively running dry, which explains why he keeps reverting back to the same tired standby stories (Brooke/Ridge/Taylor, putting Stephanie and Eric back together, have every man in town sleep with Brooke, and then two weeks later, dump Brooke for Taylor)....yadda, yadda, yadda.....Not saying that B&B is a bad soap, or that the writing is bad, but it leaves a LOT to be desired.

Y&R-----hmmm...This has been my favorite soap for most of my life, but lately, my head is spinning from all the plot-driven nonsense. When soap plots start getting TOO contrived or complicated, and viewers start forgetting how many twists and turns there are, it's time to get back to the basics. Maria is trying too hard to pull in viewers, and she is sinking this ship in the process. I think that Hogan and Maria have become too comfortable writing dark and depressing stories, and that is what they will continue to write, because Paul Rauch keeps patting them on their heads and giving them lollipops each week that Y&R turns in better ratings than the other soaps!!!

I also think that maybe higher ups have tried to convince Maria to write wackier and crazier stories just to try to appeal to that ever-important teenaged demographic, which I think that Y&R has not really appealed to over the years because their stories used to be so SOPHISTICATED and slowly paced. I have tremendous respect for both Hogan Sheffer and Maria Bell, so I hate to think that they are doing all of his without the network encouraging them to do so. They both can do better. Hell, Hogan won FOUR Emmys, almost back to back while writing ATWT, so I feel that someone is stirring the pot over there......I'll give you three guesses who that is!!!!

I truly believe that William Bell Sr. is turning over in his grave at lightning speeds. Someone needs to organize a seance' between William Bell Sr, Maria Bell and Brad Bell....any volunteers?????

I still can't believe they fired Drew Garrett, he will have the last laugh because he's going to win the younger actor emmy this summer!!
And yes, All Sonny's Children is on fire i can admit it even thought i wish they could get a little less screentime.

And won't even talk about Y&R, that's my show, i probably started watching when i was a fetus but thanks to MAB and her team of hacks i can't stand it anymore.

Although I hate GH's mobcentricity, I have always said that their breakdown writers are awesome. And their casting rocks! If only they would use those assets to write for other characters as well!
They act as if Sonny is God and that irks me!

Alstonboy, I didn't say Brad's writing was brilliant, I said the Bell name, which used to stand for brilliance (because of Bill) will soon stand for hackery if Maria and Brad aren't careful.

Okay, Jamey. I stand corrected. I do admittedly get worked up sometimes when I write my blogs because ya'll always seem to be reading my mind. I agree that the Bell name used to be synonymous with intelligent writing and sophistication, as opposed to trying to appeal to the lowest common denominators of society. I don't know WHAT demographic Maria Bell is writing for nowadays, but it ain't the same one that William Bell Sr. wrote for. William Bell Sr. wrote stories to appeal to EVERYONE, not just "XYZ"!! I know that there are a lot of little old ladies out there who are confused as hell by what's going on nowadays on their favorite soap opera.....and I don't blame them. You need a seatbelt and neck brace to watch this show nowadays without getting whiplash!!!!

Easter took a toll on all the shows if you asked me.
I don't know how BnB could be tanking, the TIP wedding was the hammer.

As for GH, it has been rocking it big-time, loving it at the moment.

AMC is sawing in my last nerve. I don't know why I am always hoping that the show will be better, I was so hoping that JR would die,  Ryhole and Gerica would get criminal charges slapped against them, Greens and David would trump that ludicrious townful of criminal degenerates and that KWAK would have fallen down some hole in the world where no one ever finds her again............. but, nope! I got all the opposite. If it weren't for a few characters, I would have folded my hand with this show months ago.

So as far as ATWT goes, with Katie running around town like lucy goosy, Silly and Holdumb, Vienna back, Noah and his confusion, Waste-case and his Ally... it is no wonder the show drops viewers. I don't know why they won't put Babs and Henry together or let Janet and Dusty marry already. NOPE.. we have her two-bit-crooke of a father hanging out waiting for orders from wee little Ralphie and Katie butting into everyones love life. UGH!

When I have caught up with OLTL, I am sure things will look a whole lot brighter for me, but right now... I would have to say, despite their horrendous decisions, IN ABC I trust!

Dmarex, DC has admitted on the podcast Y&R's been shit-tastic. With Maria, she never had 1 million viewers fleeing like LML did nor some of the foolishness she partaked in also. We cop to the tom-foolery when its deserved.

The ratings for OLTL will be probably going down starting Monday, with the storylines of Kish, Sky and Rachel ending. I know a lot of people are not going to watch because the storylines are so bad along with the firing of Kish and Sky. I know I'm not watching as of Monday when Kish goes off.

Finally we publically see the ending of "who's Sierra's Daddy" along with Sky being Mitch/Roxy son. The conclusion of these storylines have been the best acted that I've seen on OLTL.

Oliver (Scott Evans) telling Schuyler (Scott Clifton) he was the father of Sierra was heartbreaking to watch. The emotions were spot on and both actors did a great job.

The same with Roxy (Ilene) and Schuyler (Scott Clifton) have kicked it out of the park with their acting and it's been terrific. The aftermath of Schuyler finding out that he is Mitch and Roxy's son has been some of the best acting I've seen Ilene and Scott do. Mother and son coming together was very touching and heartbreaking scenes.

Along with Kish (Scott Evans and Brett Claywell) scenes of introducing Sierra as Olivers daughter to John, Layla/Cris were very heart warming scenes that showed how great those 4 actors are. You could just feel the love for Sierra from Kish radiating out from your TV.

But ... with Kish and Schuyler being fired and now off the screen, now all we have to look forward to is Langston/Ford, more drama for Starr/Cole, rapist Todd/every woman on the show, Gex redo, Rex's parent search part 2, John/Natalie part 4, snotty teens singing, Bo/Nora part 2?... it's mostly everything we've seen before. Forget it. Just put on reruns of the show gone by and fire everyone.

Kyle and Oliver are so in love with Sierra!  You can see it when they hold her, which they ALWAYS are!  Kyle stares at her lovingly when she is in her carrier.  I LOVED the scene of Oliver and Sierra's little hand play at the court house.
It is soooo not fair that we don't get to see Kish raise her!

GH Lover I am one of those who hate the Mob-centric stories but I do not find what has been happening lately to be mob.  It is the result of the mob life Sonny lives yes and I like seeing cause and effect.  What I usual hate about mob stories is that it is the same old same. Bad guy hits town...Sonny gets mad...Jason kills.  BORING

I like seeing all characters playing on scene, there are different stories and arcs and they are making me want to watch again.  I cannot remember the last thing I FF.

While I still don't understand the whole Liz in Shadybrook, I am happy that the story is moving forward.

Keep up the good work GH..you are making it fun to watch again

Right now GH, AMC and DOOL are good soap.  Like many of you, I don't understand why DG was let go.  Michael is a critical role and I don't see the upside of recasting.

OLTL is a lost cause right now.  Kish is the best part of the show and they're gone soon.  Not too much else to recommend it right now.

B&B is a joke.  The only reason the show exists is so it can mentioned on the Soup.

The destruction of Y&R is just sad.  MAB is a terrible non-writer while HS has a twisted sensibility.  The combination is toxic. Poor Bill Bell.

This week:
I like the theme of GH storylines e.g. "Taking Sides"

Kudos that they finally unleashed Nancy Lee Grahn and some of the others they refused to set free destined for pet propping.

She is magnificent and the first time I shed a tear is when she found her daughter bludgeoned...their scene is just the warm fuzzy GH desparately needs  and Morgan on the witness stand...were stand outs for me but I just like Morgan from the day he was born.  Great seeing Georgy coming back as a spirit  I really miss her. It was cute I didn't get much from other than I wonder why they killed her off.

sorry I find GH a macho drama and women are written poorly not driving story...Yes they have moments but overall its the Sonny Jason mob bimbos, bimbette show..

I want to see more hospital focused storylines with all that goes along with it....

I enjoy seeing folks (they haven't killed off its only a few of the originals to the show left) like Leslie, John, Jane, Tony, Nancy, Becky.  In a "well written storyline" I grew up with these characters and since they are still there they should be in front story not just propping the newbie dujour...they are still writing for men for me (although as CarlD2 points out on SON they always have for the most part)
however, times have changed and I want to see women driving all in "their story"

The only thing that saves this show  for me are the "actors / actresses" performances...they are bringing down the house acting wise..story wise its pretty much the same pile of dookie for me....

Ratings Week:

They pull a 1.8 and 1.9 and still power out at #3?
Geeze I guess Maya coming didn't bring them in
I expected more interest in Skye returning although I agree with
the podcast she would be better served on AMC helping to fill the void
Adam leaves. She won't get much airtime on GH they are cast heavy
and short segmented... eg 3 minutes here then they skip there 2 more minutes..

As for writing characters out of character GH does the same thing in fact they twist history to accomplish it, so  I still like Y/R and find it more enjoyable than the Pimp-A-Pet hour at GH.  Eg I like Dante a whole bunch don't make me sorry to see him having him eat the show the show every day.

Y & R has become an unfunny sitcom. I hear people criticizing it for re-hashing storylines but I can't agree that's the problem. My screen lights up whenever Jill and Kay are bickering, and they've been going at it for 30+ years.

The problem is people acting out of character, especially smart characters acting dumber than dirt,  i.e. Sharon, the reformed tramp, sleeping with three different men in two weeks then marrying her ex-husband’s brother after only knowing him a month. Phyllis, the mega-bitch, sitting around wringing her hands and waiting for a man to choose her. Michael, the sharp legal-eagle,  allowing a teenaged vixen to manipulate him and gas-light his wife, Ashley, a scientist and top business executine, not knowing when she's had a miscarriage, Adam, a kid who grew up on a farm in Wisconsin with a mother who was close to being a saint, turning into Norman Bates/Jason Voorhees.

And the dreck keeps coming…

•3. GH 2.0/6 (+.1/same)
•4. DAYS 1.9/7 (-.1/-.3)

The above is a thing of beauty.

GH has been awesome and deserves the gain.  I hope the Bell soaps crash and burn.  I'm convinced that habit and timeslot is what keeps them at the 1 and 2 spot.  I want a revolution, dammit!!!!!!

Ravennite I always said that the mobster of the month was boring ..
I am as a mob fan wanted them to focus on the Mob life and this is what they are doing they are showing family stories with the mob characters....
I really think that sorasing the kids was a  great idea , they have so much room for amazing stories, real family drama with amazing cast that I don't think other soap has...

My comment was on people that said that they should let go of the mob at all and that means let go of Sonny and Jason.. and of course this is wrong because with these mob characters you have amazing Storylines and amazing cast.....

I am right with you Jamey!   Maria and her team of writers have lost sight of the history of the show and the integrity of the core characters, all in order to meet the needs of their contrived and ridiculous storylines.  If something does not work, instead of going another route, they re-create history and change everything to fit their plots.  They are ruining  the core characters (Sharon, Phyllis, Paul, the list goes on)  to further their story-lines.  And although I like Marcy Rylan and will be glad to see her on-screen again, who ever heard of sorasing a character in the middle of a storyline.  I mean we see Abby this last week as an under-aged teen, then a few weeks later she will be 20 or 22.  They don't even bother to send her off to school and have her re-appear as the older version -- just wham bang presto change-o one day a teen, next day 20.  Just to further their story-lines.
No wonder people are tuning out in large numbers-- our show is being decimated and they don't seem to care what we think!

Let me also say that where I live, Y&R has no real competition-- just info-mercials and PEOPLES COURT.  No wonder they still lay claim to the ratings leader.  Put them up against GH and that might change.

See, I would argue that Sony and Jason could be replaced with any number of characters that are far more interesting than any mob related Sonny/Jason driven storyline:
AJ, Alan, Anna, Mac, Robert, Ned, Justus, Felecia, Stefano...I could go on for days.
I don't even need for Sonny and Jason to be written off the show...I could live with them leaving the mob and not being the driving force of 99% of all storylines. Neither character or actor is really strong enough to carry that much weight..
And for whatever momentary quality of storytelling there may be on GH right now by the end of summer things will be right back to the usual formula...Sonny and Jason in some violent war against a "bad" mobster while being cheered on by everyone in Port Charles. And anyone who dares to not drink the Kool-Aid will treated like a pariah.. It is a neverending and frankly tedious cycle with these characters.

As for the sorry state of YR...everyone in charge over there (MAB, Rauch and Hogan) need to be shown the door. I have always felt that Claire Labine would fit perfectly as the head writer of YR; her writing sensibilities just seem to fit with the type of show YR should be in my opinion.

And BB has always been a joke so I don't really see any difference in the quality fo the show rom any other period.

I am interested in knowing if the ratings now include DVR taping and online watching?!?  I remember quite the discussion awhile back, but never heard if it has changed to include these viewers or not.

Well then I stand corrected, Jillian. I'm glad you're acknowledging that Y&R has become pure cr*p (pardon my language, but it's THAT bad what this soap has turned into).

It all went downhill as of March 2009, and the soap hasn't recovered since.

Thanks, Jamey.

I don't know what to say about OLTL except that the Jessica "17 Again" story is horrible as is the Roxy/Rex/who's my momy and daddy mess. Todd/Kelly isn't keeping me interested either. They're losing me fast.

I watched AMC for the first time since the Anniversary Shows because of Alicia's return as Kendall. I wasn't impressed at all with what I saw so I'll be tuning out again once she leaves. I'm hoping that the new writers can do something with the mess the show has become to get some of the viewers like me back. Greenlee whining and b*tching 24/7 is not what I want to see.

Y&R is so bad lately that I almost with LML was back (and that says a lot).  I am so sick of characters being dumbed down to prop up lame newbies that no one cares about (i.e. Daisy).  And to top it all off ALL of the storylines are just too stupid to even be considered interesting.

OLTL is so bad right now. Thank god I wont be watching after Kish's exit on Monday. I don't care it increased last week or not, with the crap stories they have planned ahead, it's bound to take sooner or later.

Y&R, such an awful show. Some stories are even worse that OLTL. If things don't improve soon, I might have to tune out for a while.

B&B, what a boring ass show. You watch and either see the same tired story thats been played out years ago or see all these deadweight characters that bore me to death that get airtime, but characters like Thorne, who I care about don't get any airtime or story. I think Brad's a good writer, but he lost his mojo years ago. He's out of ideas and burned out. TIme to step aside Brad and let someone else revitalize the show.

I think why I am disappointed in Y&R lately is that it has seemed to get away from it's great storytelling of the newman's and The Abbot's. Y&R focuses on Kevin and Jana, JT & Mac (Which would be nice if not for that worthless sack of shit that plays Mac), Lily and Kane. Get your focus back on the love stories of your Big 3 Families, not all these little who-dun-it Scooby Doo shenanigans. Get back to the Newman boardroom, damn.

And  dmarex who wrote that Y&R was the worst soap on television, have you seen any of the other shit that's on? Tune into ABC- there's plenty of it. Y&R will get back to it's roots I do believe. I just wish that anything that reseembles LML material would get thrown OUT. We need to bring back people in the crew like Kay Alden & John F. Smith & Kathryn Foster. All those people that fleed while LML reigned need to be invited back!

DPK----

I agree. I think that Brad Bell needs to set his pride aside for about five seconds and let Kay Alden become head writer for the show for at least six months. I think she may be able to infuse the show with some good ideas. She was with Y&R for over 30 years, and I am sure that she can breathe some new life into it!! Brad Bell has let nepotism and hubris control him over the past few years, and now that he's finally won that damn Emmy, he probably has even more of an INFLATED viewpoint about his own talents and abilities!!! Time for someone to pop his bubble!!

Unless Brad can get it together, or agrees to step aside indefinitely and regroup, I don't think that they should even CONSIDER making B&B an hour long. If you can't create magic in just 30 minutes, there's no way you can do it in an hour!!!

WOO HOO for GH and my Davis Girls and the people that love them.  The performances all the way around have been great.
