Brad Bell On The Future Of B&B

In anticipation of The Bold and the Beautiful’s 23rd anniversary—it first aired on March 23, 1987— Brad Bell talked to Soaps In Depth about a possible end to the interminable Taylor/Ridge/Brooke triangle, and what the future holds for B&B.

SID: How many times can Ridge bounce back and forth between Taylor and Brooke before the audience gets fed up of his indecisiveness?

Brad Bell: With the last wedding of Ridge and Taylor – or wedding interruptus as we call it around here – we went with a little bit of humor. It was meant to be campy and fun. It was unique. And then Ridge picked Brooke and it was, I think, the last time. Of course, I have to be careful when I say that regarding these three!

SID: So what’s next for the show?

Brad Bell: The future is the next generation. Seeing Brooke and Ridge acting as parents, with Eric and Stephanie – together or apart – as grandparents as we build around Steffy, Hope and Oliver.

The future is the continuing battle between Stephanie and Brooke. There’s another chapter of the Forresters vs. the Logans, but it’s completely different, because it’s not about whether Ridge and Brooke will break up. Bill Spencer is becoming a full-on Logan supporter, so he will help drive this story. There will be a lot of fun and of course, more fashion.

The full interview can be found in the latest issue of CBS Soaps In Depth, where Brad talks about wanting to keep the newly introduced Jones family on canvas, and recounts some of his favourite B&B memories.

I've been saying it for a long time, this show is getting stale and dry!!! Once in a blue moon, they hit the jackpot and tell very powerfully intriguing stories, but for the most part, it all seems to be recycled garbage!!!

The Ridge/Taylor/Brooke triangle reached it's expiration date in the 90s, and it is seemingly being used as a desperate ploy to bring back viewers who have left the show. What he fails to realize is that nobody wants to see the same crap being reincarnated decade after decade----it shows a lack of creativity and imagination on Brad's part!!

It also doesn't help to have substandard actors like Brandon Beemer and Jacqueline Wood driving so much of the storyline!!! Having actors like Sarah Brown, Susan Flannery and Alley Mills in scenes with these losers drags down their performances!! Carrying dead weight does that, you know!! It drags you down!!!

They need to expand this show to an hour, introduce new characters and start mixing things up a little. I want to see more daytime veterans in powerful stories instead of seeing the same old actors---with the same questionable acting skills---day after day!!!!

Alstonboy, great post and I couldn't agree wtih you more.  It is the same old same old and the ratings is showing that the viewers are sick of the same thing on B&B.

LET IT DIE,  never watched B&B (that is the truth) and never will out of spite because when they cancelled CAPITOL.  I was a big fan of CAPITOL and where I fell in love with Marj D.  they had a HOT and TALENTED cast.  Brad is not his father, and B&B has never reached the ratings of Capitol, even when it started in 1987!  CBS cancelled Capitol and it had almost 6 rating share, B&B never came close and it has been on for 23 yrs.  ZZZZZ

Siomonstuart2003----- Appreciate the support!!! I am just at a loss to explain how a show like "Guiding Light" can be cancelled, with actors who are WAAAYYY better than the Hunter Tylos and Ronn Moss's of the world---and writing that was way more innovative and emotionally charged than what Brad Bell seems to be churning out!!

I'm not saying he's a BAD writer, but he needs to take more risks when it comes to writing!!! I say FIRE Jacqueline Wood and Brandom Beemer, recast Steffy, find a GOOD male actor who can carry storyline to put with Lesley Anne Down, get rid of some of those Logan sisters (preferably Donna and not Katie!), get rid of the guy who plays Marcus (he's also a substandard actor, in my opinion!!) and introduce some fresh new characters!! I know that the show is at a disadvantage because it is only 30 minutes long, but they need to do SOMETHING!!

Just because this show is 2nd place, that doesn't mean that the writing is necessarily GREAT or that the acting is GREAT!!  HIGH RATINGS DON'T ALWAYS EQUAL QUALITY TELEVISION!! Just look at all this reality TV crap that is highly rated GARBAGE!!!! I think that GH should be the 2nd rated show. It's FAR better written with much better actors!! Not a bad actor in the bunch!!! It is, perhaps, the only show on daytime that can boast that!!!

Totally agree, alstonboy,  the show needs to recast some actors STAT and bring in some new and refreshing ideas to the show.  I can'st stand the triangle from hell any longer, LOL.

Harlee,

Bitter much?  CBS cancelled Capitol.  B&B has its faults but it is the number 2 soap and the number 1 program worldwide.

Am I tired of the Ridge/Brooke/Taylor recycle?  Hell, yes!! But, there are good parts to it.

its hard to root for any of the characters or storylines when all they do is have sex!

now i enjoy a nice love scene, which i think B&B does best out of all the soaps, but c'mon! this week alone people are doing it everyday!

Steffy has been in a 2piece for the whole week!

MORE TAYLOR/WHIP, AGNES, BILL/KATIE!!

Focus on Steffy, Hope and Oliver?!?!? Only with RECASTS.  I can't stand Steffy.

Maybe they should recast Steffy with Nadia Bjorlin. I'm tired of her on Days.  B&B can have her!

I wouldn't call Nadia Bjorlin a powerhouse either, but I'd take her over Jackie Mac any day. She'd definitely fit the part and would no doubt have sizzling chemistry with Brandon Beemer.

Soapscribe------------

Yeah, it's a sad state of affairs when I actually find myself advocating for Nadia Bjorlin to play ANY role that involves actually opening ones mouth and reciting dialogue, but I agree, Nadia would be an improvement as Steffy--(not a VAST improvement, but better than Jackie Wood)!! However, isn't she Italian or multi-racial (I could go to Google and research myself, but I don't feel like it right now!)???? I think they need the actress who plays Ridge and Taylor's daughter to be white.

Actually, I would rather they just do an open casting call and find someone that way!! Whoever they find is BOUND to be much better than Jackie Wood or Nadia Bjorlin......it's kinda hard to get much worse!!!

I agree the actress playing Steffie is horrendous.  But then I think Hunter is pretty bad too.  They all seem to go the same acting school - they sort of talk in this staccato voice that is really annoying.  For some reason Bell seems to love hiring horrible actors and keeping them forever even though they are unpopular.  Makes a lot sense.  Not.  I used to love B & B but they retread stories so often it is ridiculous.  I have always liked the half hour because they wrap up stories faster than their hour long counterparts but I guess in doing so, can't come up with anything new.

Give it to Heidi Mueller (ex-Kay, Passions) or dye Emily Harper's hair brown and give her the role. I loved Fancy.

Heidi Mueller?? Hmmm..... Could work. However, I admit that I adamantly REFUSED to watch "Passions" for most of the time that it was on the air.......I have a very low tolerance for horrible dialogue mixed with ridiculously drawn out stories that are tailored specifically toward TEENAGERS, and I am NOT a huge fan of science fiction. That show always annoyed the crap out of me, but she seemed like a pretty good actress, even while reciting the WORST dialogue known to man.........

Emily Harper seems a little bit too old to play Hunter Tylo's daughter......Hunter is certainly no poster child for aging gracefully, but Harper is a bit of a stretch!!

I've watched B&B since the very first day, when it instantly hooked me.   It's made me cry, laugh, and count down the hours until I could see the next episode.  Often lately, it's still been making me cry and laugh, but for all the wrong reasons.  First and foremost is the utter OVERKILL of Steffy.  I don't like to be mean, but please, can we get a recast?  I mean, picking a name out of the phone book could probably find someone better suited to be called an actress.  Now there are less than qualified actors on every show, sometimes they develop their craft, sometimes, they don't.  The problem here is that Steffy seems to be on everyday, and is in every plotline of the show.  I'm afraid one day she'll waltz into Forrester Creations with a plate of lemon bars and we'll say, so long Alley Mills.  As for the Brooke/Ridge/Taylor triangle, well, it had me enthralled until, I don't know, 5 or 6 years ago.  I'm an unabashedly proud Brooke supporter, yet, I do sit back and wonder just what in the world she still sees in Ridge.  As much as I have respected the Bells commitment and contribution to daytime, maybe it's time for some new blood behind the scenes.  And I definitely think it would be wonderful to see the show exapanded to a full hour once ATWT goes off  *sniff* *sniff*  It would be wonderful to finally see another family (Whip and Aggie, etc ) on the show, over the years if you weren't a Forrester or a Logan, you could be expected to be on maybe once or twice a week for a year or so, until they grew bored with you.  I know B&B can be better than it is, but it's still a half hour that i'm not willing to give up on yet

A mop can be a better recast than JMW.

Simonstuart2003------

LMAOH!!!! Great point.

Yeah, this girl seems to be little more than a hair model, anyway!! The mop would at least serve a purpose!! LOL!! Perhaps they could rehire JMW as a recurring janitor (with NO dialogue!!) and have her "accidentally" cross paths with Hunter Tylo and Ronn Moss again with the obligatory "You look SO familiar" line......
