Kim Zimmer Talks Status of Daytime And So Long Springfield

Gearing up for the final stop on the "So Long Springfield tour", Kim Zimmer chats with The Day on the decline of daytime dramas.

On the future of soaps: I think if someone can figure out how to do these soaps on a wing and a prayer. The people who pay the bills, they don't want to spend the money on them any more because the advertising dollar isn't there like it used to be. Because of the DVRs and the VCRs taping the shows, they know people aren't watching the commercials anymore. Until somebody can figure out an aesthetically pretty way to do it and still make it good, I think we'll continue to lose soaps. ...

I know that CBS is very invested in its other two soaps (The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful), but I also know they're being told to cut their budgets as well. The same thing at ABC. I don't know how much longer that one soap in New York is going to last, One Life to Live. There's all kinds of rumblings that that will be the next one to go because New York is too expensive to produce in.

Zimmer also speaks about her participation on the multi-city events.

Getting a chance to say goodbye: To be able to go out to different areas in the country and say hello and so long to our fans who have been so loyal to our show over the years has really been quite special. There have been a lot of tears and a lot of laughter. It's been wonderful for the fans, and it's been wonderful for the actors who have been participating in these events because we've gotten to spend time with each other as well.

To see Zimmer and her former Guiding Light co-stars for the final event head to Mohegan Sun in Connecticut on March 7 starting at 10:30am. For ticket information click here.

Kim is right, if something isn't done about the way they measure shows ratings, they are all toast. Network pinheads and advertisers need to get into the 21st century. I've been complaining all along, they need to start counting TIVO, DVR and online viewing. I recently went back to the day shift, because ATWT is going off soon. I watch them Online. They just have to face fact that's the way people watch TV now a days. Hope to see Kim soon somewhere.

Oy vey...Kim knows a thing or two about Soaps going off the air !  She was a member of the final cast of The Doctors, Santa Barbara, and Guiding Light !!!!

The only other soap Kim appeared on was One Life To Live.

Now, before anyone thinks I am bashing Ms. Zimmer.....I am not.

Just saying that when it comes to talking about cancelled soaps, she knows what she is talking about.

It's like Gary Coleman talking about anger management issues or Tiger Woods talking about swinging clubs !!

I agree with Kim, networks/advertisers  need to catch up with technology before its to late.

What more can they do to these soaps than they already have; Y&R salary disputes and reduce staff, AMC moving to L.A.. It's just a sad, sad day in soapland. All soaps should go to cable. I've seen soaps in other countries their doing well, there is to much restrictions on what they can do hear, they show more T&A. Remember when Bill Lewis on GL showed a little butt, what an up roar that was. That was after Janet Jackson Boobgate.

re: "Remember when Bill Lewis on GL showed a little butt, what an up roar that was."

Wasn't it a scene with Shayne Lewis (Marty West) and Marina ?
