Will Oprah's Exit Cause The View and General Hospital to Swap Timeslots?

Rumblings continue to grow louder concerning what ABC and its affiliates plan to do once The Mighty O exits daytime in 2011. According to the LA Times, one option has ABC Daytime's hit talk show The View swapping timeslots with the network's flagship sudser General Hospital.

Another option, although less likely, would be for ABC would be to swap "The View" with "General Hospital," which typically airs at 3 p.m. on most of its stations. The risk there is that "General Hospital" has been running in the afternoon forever and a move to late mornings could severely hurt the show, which is one of the few remaining soap operas.

Hmm, something tells me mob shoot outs and medical mayhem won't work nearly as well over coffee and bagels as Elisabeth Hasslebeck and Joy Behar hissing at one another like a pair of deranged, combative cobras in a pit, but what do I know?

Interesting idea.  I think ABC would be smart to move The View to GH's timeslot, but I wonder if affiliates could be convinced to switch its noon access time to 11am.  They could argue that an 11am local newscast would get a jump on the competition and then the three soaps could stay together.

I think it would be better to either move the entire soap lineup back an hour or move OLTL to noon, followed by AMC and then GH at 2.  I agree that GH's mob-related storylines are better for later in the afternoon (remember what happend to The Edge of Night when it was moved to earlier in the day!).  Either that, or GH would have to change its tone considerably (which many viewers would argue is not a bad thing).

On my local ABC affiliate, there's no local news at all (!) and Ellen airs at 4, with Oprah following at 5. Switching GH and The View would mean you'd have GH at 11, infomercials from 12-1, AMC at 1, OLTL at 2, The View at 3 and Ellen at 4. I don't think it would help the ratings of either The View or GH at all. Plus, I can't imagine switching so abruptly from the snipefest that The View can sometimes be to Ellen's funfest. Too weird.  Bad idea, ABC. If it ain't broke...

I lived in an area where our CBS affiliate had Guiding Light on in the mornings for many years, like MANY CBS stations...which I believed lead to it's ratings demise (along with other factors obviously).

Well this is a horrible idea!! One of the reasons GH probably has done so well historically in the younger demos is because it's on right after school in most places. I know that's why my friends used to watch it when I was in high school. Moving it would be pretty stupid for that reason alone. Although there are so many other reasons not to move it - like it's been on at the same time for over 40 years!

This proposed swap would be a death blow to GH.

If ABC is so excited to make a switch somewhere...how about switching out Hasselbeck with a conservative that can be mature and credible so there can be a more highbrow debate going on THE VIEW?  That I would be all for!!!!!

I vote for Patricia Heaton. She's a conservative, and she's sane. Same with Dixie Carter, which I must admit, I found hilarious after all the years she spent playing the most liberal character in TV since Maude, Julia Sugarbaker!

I'm  confused.  If GH is supposedly the strongest show on their schedule and the one least likely to be on the bubble, then why are they thinking about moving it to the morning?  I thought that was reserved for ratings-challenged shows like Guiding Light.  Or is it that GH is actually ratings-challenged at this point?

Yeah, the morning timeslot is a death knell for soaps. I thought ABC wanted to save AMC and GH, and didn't care about OLTL. If the story went that they wanted to put OLTL in a morning timeslot to give The View an afternoon spot, I'd believe it. However, I think The View needs to stay in the morning arena; I think its ratings would suffer in an afternoon timeslot. Aren't its morning ratings good, or is the final hour of Today with Hoda and Kathie Lee killing them?

The View's ratings are very high in their time slot and moving them into Oprah's time slot or an hour earlier would be stupid.

GH has been in the same 3PM time slot for more than 40 years and doing just fine.  Again, it would be stupid to move them.

On the East Coast we have news at noon so having The View lead into that means more people watch the noon news.  And then the three soaps follow.  Oprah comes on at 4PM with news following that.  They need to figure out what they want to put in the 4PM slot when Oprah's show is over instead of messing around with a schedule of shows that are doing perfectly fine in the slots they are already in!

For me there is just one word to describe this idea... RIDICULOUS!!!

The View couldn't take Oprah's time slot, because Oprah's not a network show.  A syndicated show has to go into that timeslot.

Also, Patricia Heaton's prime time series has been renewed for a second season, so she's not available.  (Personally, I think Elisabeth does a good job holding her own on that ridiculously lopsided liberal panel.)

It would be a stupid move for any soap actually. I think if they moved in any soap from it's time slot it has had for years, GH has been airing at 2 and 3pm for what, 40 years? It would kill it.

Hmmm who here thinks they'll move OLTL instead and claim its to help "raise" there viewership.

The photos accompanying this story made me think Tony Geary was getting a talk show. I would totally watch that!

If this were to happen, then in my area GH would come on at 10am! The usual slot for The View....I'm sorry, but GH on at 10 in the morning? LOL! This slot change would KILL the show. GH is not a show that should be on earlier in the day!

How about leave the View at 11am /10am CST and replace Barbara Walters with her old nemesis Rona Barrett!  Talk about re-igniting an old feud !

Besides, the viewing audience wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

I say keep General Hospital where it is at 3pm/ 2pm CST.

Followed by Tennessee Tuxedo and Chumley at 4pm/3pm CST.

I wonder how many watch live versus record the soaps.  I think the effect wouldn't be that profound, since most people record the show, anyway.

Hasn't ABC learned anything from Conan, Jay, and NBC?

New time slots for tv shows almost never work out. I can only think of a few tv shows that actually did better in a new time slot. Dallas moved from sunday night to friday night. That was a good move. On daytime, time switching kills soaps. Soap viewers have habits and you mess with the habit and everyone loses. I still don't like Days of our Lives moving a half hour to 1 pm instead of 12:30 cst! And that has been Years! LOL!

My God, I swear there more idoits in power as an executive than any other job....You don't move your daytime serials, because you want to the 4pm time slot?  That not going to work or even moving GH to 3pm EST.....  You have affiliates and 4pm either has Oprah, Ellen(local news), court shows, ie....

What they need to do is create the next generation of daytime talk shows.  There alot of people who could make talkshows great.  Lisa Rinna should get her own show, Fran Drescher and Toure'... I mean it can be done, and network exec need to get their head out of the clouds.  I could be a network exec and run circles around these idoits!
