Darius McCrary On Being Malcolm Winters: "He Is Shemar and I am Darius"
On Air On Soaps' Michael Fairman talks with Darius McCrary about taking over the uber popular role of The Young and the Restless' Malcolm Winters, and what distinguishes him from originator Shemar Moore.
MICHAEL: You have the task of overcoming the mark that Shemar Moore left in this role. There are skeptics that say you look nothing like him. And, “How can Y&R recast this role?” Do you feel you are up for the task? And, does that pressure play with your mind?
DARIUS: No. I have been doing this long enough to know a few things. Look, Shemar is a great guy and a great actor, and a beautiful human being, but he is Shemar and I am Darius. I have been doing this since I was nine years old. So whatever the role is, I am going to do the best I can do. The only thing I am concerned with is stepping on the stage in front of that camera and giving the best performance I know I can give, day in and day out as an actor. The way I look at it is, it’s just like if I was playing football, and if there was a running back before me who put up some numbers and he gets traded and I come in and I get to run that backfield. Believe me, I am going to step on some heads to get the numbers and the yards that I have to. Also, it makes it easy to do when you are working with a group of consummate professionals who are extremely gifted. This is an unselfish group of actors here at Y&R, who are completely thorough.

Well I'm looking forward to seeeing Darius in the role. I'll save my thoughts until I actually see him onscreen.
I think some ppl are just going WAY overboard w/ their rants .... damn can you wait to see the man onscreen first? Some are basing their opinion on Darius from a character he played 20 freakin years ago ..... GEEZ! If he comes on and plays the hell out of this role, and gives a great performance then I'm okay w/ it.
As I said, I'll wait before comdeming the brutha.

Where does it say a recast has to be identical or similar??? Look @ Blair on OLTL , different race, yet she rocked it. There is an audition process, maybe he just blew 'em all out of the water. Do not judge a book by it's cover! Give the man a chance, geez! Not even Shemar is really Shemar any longer. Have u seen his facelift??? lol

Ok this Darius bashing is not just based on looks it's based on his acting too he was dreadful in Kingdom Come,he was bad in Saw 6,he was ok in a "hard man is hard to find "so it's not just all based on him being Eddie Winslow so if you go back and see his acting you'll see what everyone else sees.Oh and I wouldn't put too much faith in the Y&R audition process these days b/c Clementine Ford,Yvonne Zima,and Eva Marcille also audition this year and they are all awful so yeah I have know he will be dreadful plus yeah he looks like a moose lol and thats not malcolm!

A recast actor does not have to be just like the original, but it's usually a plus to not want to laugh when I look at the guy, especially if it's not a comedic character.

It is what it is. Love that some of you are staying positive until he arrives. Good for you but you aren't going to get it from me. HORRIBLE RECAST AND I AM NOT BUYING. I have seen some of the press photos and it just looks WRONG!

I hope that next year that we are not reading in SOD.. worst recast - Darius McCrary as Malcolm Winters or how long it will even last.
We have to look at the recast as this.. they wanted to bring the character back but more than likely with all the big bucks that they got sucked into paying Eric Bradeon they wouldn't have afforded anyone else.

Even overlooking the obvious difference in appearance are we supposed to believe this 'Malcolm' is really supposed to be Lily's father? Really? I could've bought him as a new character to pursue Lily but there is no way nuMalcolm is old enough to be her father.
There had to be a better fit for this part. MAB should've stolen that hot actor from BB that plays Donna's ex flame.

I've gotta agree with Jamey, etc. on this.
Look, I'm sure the guy is a pretty good actor and a decent guy, but for the love of God, why hire him to play Malcolm? He could have played anybody. Hell, this show needs more minorities on the show. Get rid of some of the Scooby Gang, Eden, and Daisy, and put people like Noah on recurring. Then they could actually hire more people of color with star power, rather than former family sitcom actors!

This is par for the course on soaps. Leslie Anne Down is only 5 years older than Jack Wagner. Remember the infamous Edward Quartermaine recast? Jed Allen and Stuart Damon were the same age!
This is not a good recast at first glance but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. I can't imagine him as Malcomb but I will watch. It's not the actor's fault for taking the job with scripted programming on the down swing. Get that $$ Darius! It's the casting director. With all the actor's out of work, why go so far off the mark? Heck, if we just wanted a name, how about Remy from GL? If we're disregarding age, at least he's eye candy!

I've been extremely vocal about this recast along with my DC compadres. I'm not giving this JACK! The guy looks like he can be Lily's love interest and Cane looks like he can be his daddy! Hell so does Neil! Yeah its a soap and we must suspend or disbelief but in this case, no. When recasting a popular role as such, everyone and their mom knows you do it with someone that either looks similar to the previous actor so its not too jaring or someone just as popular if not a tad bit better.

Onto "The Recast". I think this is a failure because again - and this has been a familiar refrain with Y&R this year - the backstage business is totally overwhelming the action in front of the camera.
I've looked at McCrary on YouTube and he's not a good actor - this is not going to work. With Ford, Heinle, that chic who plays Eden and Daisy -these actors all have something in common - They can't act their way out of a paper bag! And sadly Darius is going to be on the same heap.

What Y&R needs is a complete overhaul. They need to cut the fat and start writing for characters that actually matter. This Sheila distraction, as entertaining as it might be, is a waste of talent and money. It adds at least 3 actors onto the roster when the show is suffering from money tightening. Make the show what it used to be!

Darius is not getting the "Blair Cramer" pass on this recast with me.
Sorry, I have seen his roles since the end of the Eddie Winslow days and he is not really a strong enough actor to make overcome all the glaring ways (appearance,age etc.) that he is very much NOT Malcolm Winters ! Kassie DaPaiva was up ready for her close up.
I stand by my orginal thought which is if they were so impressed by the actor they should have given him another role,a newly created one. For example, what if he was this new Mogul on the Block Tucker McCall's "take no prisoners" attorney or one of his higher up executives.
