OLTL Least Watched Show for the First Week of December; DAYS Dips it Low

Fans must not be not taking kindly to Nicole (Arianne Zuker) snatching up Sami's (Alison Sweeney) baby again on Days of Our Lives! The soap lost a crushing 310,000 total viewers the week of November 30 through December 4 (Source: SON). DAYS went down two-tenths of a ratings point in households and dropped one-tenth of a ratings point among women 18-49. Not exactly a good way to start off daytime-related headlines in the post-Comcast world of NBC.

The news wasn't much better over at the Mouse House. The soap we want most to succeed here at Daytime Confidential (Yeah I said it, this aint the Washington Post. We proudly admit we are biased toward, you know, GOOD soap opera!), One Life to Live was the least watched soap opera in total viewers for the week, lagging behind even cancelled sudser As The World Turns. Even if you believe the long held contention that the networks and their advertisers don't give a rat's tooty fruity wrapped in rooty about total viewers, and only look at the demographics, the news still ain't good for Llanview lovers. OLTL was dead last in households, tied with ATWT. OLTL did manage to best ATWT and AMC among the coveted women 18-49 demo, but that really isn't saying much.

The time is NOW folks. If you love OLTL and want to keep it on the air, you better start watching. Better yet, you better start pimping it yourself, because ABC is too busy getting Mayor Bloomberg and Whoopi Goldberg (who looked like she'd rather be shopping for iPods with Speidi than talking about who Greenlee loves on The View last week) to promote All My Children, a soap that is creatively bankrupt, routinely over budget, lacking a long term head writer, or vision and is about to lose two of its biggest stars (Thorsten Kaye and Alicia Minshew) in the demo advertisters crave, as it embarks on a controversial move to the West Coast, than the one soap in daytime with primetime quality writing, production and acting, and just so happens to be on their lineup— OLTL.

Take a page from the fans who saved Friday Night Lights. Don't bank on ABC. Start personal blogs, letter writing campaigns, get out there on message boards, Facebook and Twitter, and talk the show up. Send Brian Frons Hershey's Kisses if you love Kish.  Send email tips to magazines you think should do feature articles on One Life to Live's talented stars and storylines. In other words, do ABC's job for them. That's all any of us can do to keep this show on the air.

Not that promotion is everything. General Hospital, easily the most hyped of all the soaps still on daytime, lost 170,000 total viewers over the previous week, and they have a mother freaking MOVIE STAR guest starring. Jesus take the wheel.... GH dropped one-tenth of a ratings point in households, yet held tight among women 18-49, just behind first place holder The Young and the Restless. While I cannot recommend GH quite as wholeheartedly as I do OLTL, the daily goings-on in Port Chuck are still appointment television in my house. GH has a great cast, funny, smart writing and interesting stories IMO, but I do believe it's time my boy Bob "Scarface" Guza admitted defeat and let the mob storyline take a back seat. Yes, I am a card-carrying fan of mob storylines, but hell if putting James Franco in one can't make people tune in, it's time for Guza to stop watching Sopranos DVDS and maybe pop in a Grey's Anatomy or two! Guza can always satisfy his mob lust by writing direct-to-DVD thug movies for Master P. Hey, don't knock it, 'til you try it. It's hard out there for a soap scribe!

Moving on to AMC, that soap rose in total viewers 28,000, and is up for the year 105,000 total viewers year-to-date. AMC dropped one-tenth of a ratings point in households, but is still tied with GH in fourth place. AMC held steady among women 18-49, the demo advertisers covet the most, tied for last place with ATWT.

And now that I officially have carpal tunnel, let's talk about CBS Daytime, soon to be rechristened the Paramount Game Show Morning Round Up. The network that iced two soaps in one year saw daytime's most popular soap, The Young and the Restless shed 83,000 total viewers over the previous week. Y&R dropped one-tenth of a ratings point in households, yet held stead among women 18-49. I think Y&R's problem is that the show has become too common. Tyler Perry reminded me of what this show once stood for when he mentioned how his Mama wanted to "live like Mrs. Chancellor" on the Barbara Walters Christmas Special and Bait and Tackle Bazaar the other night .

Y&R used to be glamourous and intriguing. Now it's just common, with common stories about common whores like Sharon Abbott ( the amazing Sharon Case who deserves SO much better!), with common villains like Adam (Michael Muhney, a good guy and talented actor, but ENOUGH. Backburner please?) and that Daisy— whose name I won't even bother to look up—common recasts like Amelia Heinle and Clementine "I Know My Name" Ford, common sets like that damn clubhouse where Nick (Joshua Morrow), a captain of industry, and Phyllis (Michelle Stafford) live like some college kids playing house. That couch needs to be condemned by OSHA after all the screwing that goes on there. Oh that's right, Phyllis had it removed.  Thank God. Can y'all build them a bedroom set or something?

I tell you if it wasn't for Billy Miller and Elizabeth Hendrickson as the hot-like-fire Billy and Chloe (who I will never see together), I might have to be tardy for the Y&R party. Maria The Arena Bell, I am putting you on notice. If Y&R tells a ridiculous, insulting storyline, featuring a bunch of shucking and jiving with Eddie Winslow Winters, I am taking this show off my DVR. I ain't playing either! I will never get these years back. I am sorry, I am cross. Soaps don't have to die. Look at Desperate Housewives, Brothers and Sisters, Tiger and Elin. Soaps can survive if people would write them worth a damn.

Moving on to The Bold and the Beautiful. The camptastic soap lost 26,000 total viewers the week of Nov. 30-Dec 4. B&B held it steady in households and saw a bump of one-tenth a ratings point among women 18-49. I am actually looking forward to B&B these days. Bill and Katie are growing on me, even though Don Diamont's wardrobe for the show most assuredly isn't. Heather Tom is radiant as Kate-oria. Hell if I can't have her on Y&R, this will have to do. Maybe Melody Thomas Scott and Eric Braeden can join B&B as Ma and Pa Logan when Sony finally manages to strong arm them out? Kidding, kidding! Oh you people have no sense of hummus!

Last, and least—if you ask Les Moonves— we have As The World Turns. The now-cancelled sudser was the only CBS soap to gain total viewers, posting a 37,000 viewer bump over the previous week. ATWT also went up in households and among women 18-49. Wow, a soap on one network actually tries to turn its fate around and it's awarded with a pink slip, meanwhile a soap on another network (which shall remain nameless) that no doubt makes creator Agnes Nixon say words not suitable for a public blog gets a nice, all-expenses paid relocation package to La La Land. I guess that's show business! If y'all think I talk crazy on DC, follow me on Twitter and Facebook!

I am for one don't believe the ratings I DON'T
I think more people watch soaps I know there are
If on DVR or Tive or online they do
So the system  need to change!!!!!!!!!!
And I don't want mob to less , I think JF S/L is really good and that week he wasn't really on I think this week will be better in the ratings ..........
It does  need balance and GH is improving it is along way but is getting there ..
Also I want to see this week ratings I think this week was better

Unfortunately, whether we believe the ratings or not, they're what the soap's futures are based on. Think of it like a really creepy religion.

 Lol Jamey
Can't the channels boss work to change that ??
I heard that they maybe going to see the DVR result so maybe there is hope ...

I remember a while back SJB said that GH is really high in TIVO so maybe they should add that ..

And by the way that week wasn't really a mob week , Franco was not there we had Jason talking about him but he wasn't on .. and there wasn't a real mob story  also it was main focus on Liz/Lucky/Nick thing so maybe that scared the viewers LOL.....

By the time the Nielsen monopoly is busted up the only soap on TV will be How to Survive Tiger Woods Second Marriage.

Something to consider

Only GH and YR make the list of the 30 most tivo'ed shows on television

http://m.tivo.com/most_popular/?page=3

And, according to About.com, Tivo viewers are not counted in the ratings.

http://generalhospital.about.com/b/2009/07/24/gh-ratings-pick-up-steam.htm

Moreover, while GH doesnt do extremely well on Soapnet for 2009 “GH,” garnered 434,000 total viewers (up 10% over last year), and 174,000 in Women aged 18-49 (an increase of 57% over their third quarter 2008 numbers).

Soapnet viewers are not included in the ratings either.

The thing about Tivo and DVRs though is you have to watch the eppys within 24 hours for them to count for the Nielsens. I honestly think SOAPnet is bad for the ABC soaps. Those ratings don't count toward their daytime viability. SOAPnet has no budget, so if Disney decides the ABC soaps aren't viable on daytime (which they have), they can't go to SOAPnet. SOAPnet can't even afford to go halvsies for another season of that Candian football soap, so they certainly can't afford to produce a daytime soap, unfortunately. I think Y&R and DAYS benefit (slightly) from being on SOAPnet, because ABC has to pay to license those shows, but I don't think it helps the ABC soaps.

It's sad to see DOOL drop so many viewers.  I've been enjoying the show so much lately, especially with the return of Louis Sorel's Vivian.  And the Hope/Bo/Carly/Justin quad is just picking up steam, then there's the Carly's daughter mystery (I still think it will turn out to be Melanie), plus bringing Kate/Stefano/Vivian/Victor to the forefront?  I haven't been FFing the show at all these days, it's been THAT enjoyable.

Just want to add that I really enjoyed yesterday's General Hospital, too.  Loved seeing Dante and Lucky working together, it'd be great of that show could get away from their core mobster family and start working toward rebuilding the PCPD, as well as the staff at GH (great to see SR's Steven Lars Webber, too!)  I'm not gonna hold my breath, but it is encouraging to see the cops being written as a bit more intelligent, and major stories brewing for Scrubs, as well as Nurse Liz.  Also love the possibility of a Mac/Alexis union, bringing together their two families of girls.

I find it hard to believe Days could be THAT enjoyable when it's being written by Dena Higley. This woman proved her hackiness on OLTL from 2004-07 and during her first Days stint in 2003.

OLTL's ratings frustrate me. It really is the best soap on the air right now, so why do people prefer the steaming pile of poop served up by AMC, GH, and Y&R? Ugh!

So let me get this straight, when DOOL increases in the ratings it's thanks to Crystal Chappell but when the ratings drop it is because of storyline, gotcha.

I wish all soaps could survive but right now I only care about GH quite frankly and their demos are pretty decent.

I don't think having a movie star on GEneral Hospital is all that helpful while the plot he is involved in is really just Jason spouting the same lines over and over and over and over and over.  We get it.  Franco is the homeless man.  Franco waved at Jason.  The homeless man waved at Jason.  Someone stepped on the other mob dudes windpipe.  We learned all of that on the day of the shootout.  Jason keeps repeating that to Sam.  Either he needs to say it to understand it or she needs to hear 80 bajillion times to actually understand that.  The viewers got it weeks ago.   Why tune into a show that repeats the same lines day after day after day after day?  Why bother if you already know the dialog?  It wasn't until Jason met Franco face to face that the plot had any forward motion and was even remotely entertaining.  Yet, how long has it been since the first time they played Adam Lambert's Mad World?  It seems like forever.

I cannot see adding James Franco to the cast has done much besides stalling other plots.

I can only speak for myself but OLTL hasn't been all that great for me.  I don't like its devotion to putting rapists front and center.  You have Todd and now Mitch.  Why?  Why do these writers find rapists so entertaining?  Why do they insist on believing that shows that are predominately viewed by women should include a rapist?  I just can't deal with that.  I look to see if Todd is on and don't watch if he is.  And my viewing habits matter.

Unless OLTL has a huge uptick in the ratings it is finished.  Frons has all the ammo he needs to cancel the series.   People keep mentioning DVR and internet, for viewership but the network doesn't make money on those two platforms.   Looking at the ratings now is just depressing.  All these shows could be cancelled within three years based on low viewership.

There's a really interesting article in EW this week about how the cable compaines have tons of information on DVR watchers but they don't release the data because they can't figure out a way to monetize their efforts.

But yet I am guessing you didnt mind this repeatative bit of dialog...Jasssooonnn LOVEEEEE meeee.  You do love MEEEE dont you???  Liz it just isnt safe  But we could have BOOTY CALLS!!!  Liz it just isnt safe.  Who cares if I am putting my kids in danger, my crotch crickets want to dance.  Liz it just isnt safe.

We often get repeatative dialog in soaps.  Its one of the worst aspects of the genre.

How many times do we get Jr telling Adam that Annie is a psycho and Adam insisting he loves his wife, she saved him, blah blah blah on AMC. or Jake explaining to Amanda that David is Trevor's father - ummm I think she knows that Jake (even if he isnt). How many times do we get nora and bo explaining to each other that she is married to Clint, her husband, who is his brother, who is waiting for them to get their son who's name is Matthew from the hospital in Washington because he had an accident that cost him his legs requiring Greg to save him. Do they really need to explain who mathew is to one another? Or Clint? or where the hospital is located?  If they dont know those things by now, they never will.

Even GH, how many times have we had Olivia recapping who dante is for Jax.

The idea that the Franco storyline is the only one that recovers ground ad nasuem is bs.

I hear ya GHvetfan.  I'm not saying OLTL is bad but it certainly has its flaws.
I personally thought the Todd propping and throwing Ross under the bus because he has a temper was disgusting and I tuned out.

I for one stopped watching OLTL once I realized that they were not going to pair Blair and Ross.  I have been watching  OLTL for a while and Blair was never my favorite but then when I see her interact with men who were not Todd, I loved her.  I really really loved her and Ross. They had some serious chemistry.  For them to do an AJ move on Ross to pimp Todd/Tea's daughter storyline pissed me off and I took that show off my DVR.  I love Rachel, Cristian/Layla but unless they get Evangline back, I'm done.

I'm not shocked at GH.  No one wants to see a bunch of OLD mobbies still walking around being hitmen and stuff. Even after a while the Sopranos had to go off air!

One word....Liason lol

I also had to take Y&R off my DVR. My grandmother is so pissed at that show. She loves her some Sharon and she hates what's going on with her.

With all due respect, this seems incredibly hypocritical.  Your name shows your love for a show whose most famous character, and the father of one of the two people shown in your avatar, is arguably the most famous rapist in the history of daytime television, LUKE SPENCER!!!!!!!

GH has been showcasing him on and off for over 30 years, but, as you proudly say, you are still a  GHvetfan.

"Well...she is a bit slow!"

That is funny !

The thing that is bothering me about Sam is her hand wringing.  Why is she afraid of Jason getting hurt?  This is the same guy who shot up a church and took down all of Faith Roscoe's men.  He was handcuffed and took out the entire hit squad outside of the courthouse.  He was unarmed when the shooting started in the emergency room on Night Shift and took out all of the gunmen single handed.  Suddenly, Sam is afraid for Jason.  I don't remember her being so nervous the last time she was with him.  It seemed a bit over the top.  She is now worried about him facing one lone artist alone.

Yes, I am a GHvet fan.  Yes, I am a fan of the Quartermaines, the Webbers, the Hardys, the Scorpios, and to the Spencers.   Yes, Luke raped Laura 30 years ago but I didn't see that.  I watched Luke after Laura forgave him and I don't like that they had her do that.  He isn't running around holding her hostage and re-raping her.  He isn't torturing her family and taunting her daughters.  I don't see the two tales as the same thing.

I would love to watch OLTL and support the show because I love Vicki, Bo, Clint, and Dorian.  I have a fondness for the younger actors on OLTL just as I do Robin Scorpio.  It just turns my stomach to have two women fighting over a guy who was holding a woman he raped agianst her will as recently as six months ago.  They just forgive him and now are fighting over him.  That is some crazy stuff and this viewer will not watch it.  I am quite sure I am not alone.

I watch GH but don't always like that show either.  I fast forward through a lot of the repetitive bull when I can.  I like the vets so I like Liz.  I hate the crap that they have her saying right now.   That doesn't mean I liked the repetitive stuff they had her saying to Jason.  These writers write a script and them reuse it for weeks.  It didn't start with the Franco business and I am sure it will not end there.  My point was that getting a movie star to appear on your show is a band-aid that they are trying to use to cover a gun shot wound.   They need better writers and better use of the entire cast to stem the flow of viewers that are jumping ship.  I am not sure where in my post I said I preferred Liz and Jason's diealog.

And the answer to one question asked is yes.

Oh for goodness sakes, are certain people still trying to claim that GH's ratings are all about Liason?? HELLO?!?!?! Do you not see that all soaps are in Crash and Burn mode?!?!? GH has been plummeting in ratings for YEARS (as all soaps have) - not because of Liason and not because of James Franco and not because Kelly Monaco is on the show, and not because "Brian Frons likes Hos". That's just as ridiculous as me saying the reason for the latest drop is JJ coming back as Lucky...  I've said many times why I've stopped watching OLTL. And I think the fact that they've added even more psychos & rapists on to the show hasn't helped. But I also know that that's not the only reason the show is failing. There's no one or two reasons why any show has failed.

DAYS lost 300,000+ viewers in One Week. ATWT is cancelled. B&B is down almost 500,000 viewers from last year. OLTL is dead last. The ratings for All Soaps are in the toilet. And I can't see things getting better anytime soon. I think the best we can hope for is that we're left with 3 soaps on the air within the next 4 years.

I'm sorry, I'm just frustated because I love soaps so much, they've been a big part of my life since I was a kid. I'm seeing them vanish before my eyes and there's not a damn thing we can do about it. I know I shouldn't be so touchy about it but I can't help it.  I guess I need to remember the end of soaps isn't the end of the world. I guess I could get into sci-fi shows or something...

I have watched OLTL for decades, but now I shut it off because of the fake Todd Manning. Enough is enough..........I agree with the podcast that said bring back RH to OLTL. It cannot hurt to try.
