Ellen Wheeler Joins ATWT as Director
By Mark on December 07, 2009

TV Guide Canada's Nelson Branco is reporting Ellen Wheeler has been hired as a director at As The World Turns.
OMFG: Several set sources confirm that show-killer Ellen Wheeler (Another World, Guiding Light) has been hired by World Turns as a “director.” One furious actor tells Soapgeist, “It’s a nightmare. You know we’ll be cancelled now!” Never thought I’d say this — but I hope Christopher Goutman is never let go. Only in soaps, folks, only in soaps! Good luck, Oakdale. You’ll need it now.
As someone who never watched Guiding Light or Another World I have no idea how bad those shows got, but maybe she's a better director? Trying to remain positive here.

Remember when she was so popular in the role of Marley? I bet she wish she hadn't left acting.
They should have hired her to play Marley.

I still don't get all the Ellen Wheeler hate. She made some mistakes that were BIG and COSTLY, but she's portrayed as if she was OUT TO DESTROY the soap rathen trying (and failing) to find innovation to save it. There have undoubtedly been lessons along the way.
I remember ANOTHER WORLD being great when it was cancelled and how is Wheeler at all responsible for any of that anyway? Goutman was the EP and Wheeler had made a successful return as Marley in a seemingly impossible casting move.
SOAPS are a medium where the EXEC PRODUCER and HEAD WRITER have all the power and shape the show. A director isn't going to have that much impact. So this all seems like an overreaction.

Sorry to go off-topic but Nelson refers to Tracy Morgan as Chris Rock in his "Sudsiest Quotes" section. Was that intentional?

As long as Ellen Wheeler has no power I guess I can deal with her being director however ideally I wish she never set foot inside a studio ever again.
I don't think EW is the devil however she is an incompetent.

Hell long time ATWT fans know she was a director on the show before she went to GL so it is really nothing new about it.
How the hell can a director doom a show? Helll she was the director of ATWT during the hogan years which imo were great. so Ellen knows ATWT and the style over there.

I don't think Ellen Wheeler is intentionally trying to get P&G soaps cancelled (Another World, GL, ATWT).
However, she has executed some poorly thought out ideas (Wacky Wednesdays on GL come to mind).
To me, she doesn't 'get" soaps and what makes them successful in the long haul.
As a director, hopefully she won't come up with new and innovative directing techniques in order to SAVE ATWT.

I don't think it's a coincidence that the hw (co at the end) and EP of GL are now at ATWT. If you want to kill another show, you hire the people who killed the last one.

Oh, no. Now Jean, David, Chris, and Ellen can run the final P&G soap off the air. So sad.

This is scary - they have been doing a lot of outdoor sequences with crappy cameras. If ATWT starts implementing that more i seriously will never understand Telenext or that idiot Wheeler! I can't believe she can get hired at another soap after running the oldest drama into its grave.

If they don't let her anywhere near a position of power...ever...it should be fine. I remember when she directed at ATWT before and she wasn't bad. Keep her far away from the writing room, the executive rooms, the actors other than when she's directing them, and pretty much the set at all other times then I see no problem.

All black people look the same, don't you know?! LOL! Chris Rock was my bad. I'll fix it — thanks.
As we all know, Ellen Wheeler is first hired as a director, then TeleNext, who for some reason adores her, promotes her to EP. Which is why I made that comment regarding Christopher.
Regardless, this is the only business that will recycle failures. And I like Chris's direction, so I'm not looking forward to Ellen's trademark hackery infiltrating my screens again! The body isn't even cold yet!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO This horrible. I don't even watch ATWT but I don't want to see another soap fall, and I especially don't want to see Wheeler CONTINUE to get work in this industry. They should put her on a Brighten Bay type thing. This is the worst news I have heard all fall about soaps. Her office over at GL isn't finished being converted from a chapel to an office and she's already making bank on another show!?

Oh why not Grant Aleksander instead of Ellen W. as director I feel for ATWT it has gotten so good now but to toss Ellen into the fold. Right or wrong Ellen was EP at the GL closing as a show this alone wil not sit well with ATWT cast, fans and probably the crew too. Grant would have been a great choice he directed before is well liked by both the industry and fans and would have given the show a good boost. Hiring Jill Lore Hurst as co-head writer too would have been good too as she cleaned up a lot of GL mess in the time she was given.

This looks like the end of ATWT. Sorry, but she is horrible producer and they really want ATWT to go just like GL.
What's next? They move the cast to Peapeck to save money, no offense, Peapeckers, but the town didn't work with the show. They need to undo this ASAP.

It deffinatley isnt a good thing that two of GL's main problems are now at ATWT even as a director EW could do damage if anything she can bring moral down. Did anyone else read on the soapgeist that Lifetime would of picked up GL had it been cancelled a month earlier? Apparently a GL director spilled the beans about that, talk about a nife in the heart to GL fans.

Thats a good idea, they should have put Grant over there. We all said it...she will kill again!
All kidding aside, my heart truly does go out to all of the cast and crew over at ATWT, even though she is only a director, they have the trifecta now. At least we'll know what episodes she directs...we will hear the moaning music and once again...hide.

This is a direct message from Goutman and CBS/Telewhatever that they will not listen to uproars from their fan base.
Any recent improvements on the show is the head writing switch, not Goutman - he already pretty much guaranteed the show's fate, with doing the opposite of what fans wanted, and put on a painful show to watch the last couple of years.

To coin the phrase: This day will live in infamy. They've awaken a sleeping giant. Save ATWT fans must unite to fight the evil Nazis. This big dog will fight when you rattle it's cage; you'll be sorry that you mess with the ATWT fans.

This is some crazy shit! I don't get it. It is horrible PR and can't be good for the morale of the ATWT cast. But, nothing surprises me anymore. Next, Chuck Pratt will be sharing HW writies duties with DK.

Talk about over reaction!! Get a grip. ATWT has been great lately. Do any of you bother to watch the show?
Ellen Wheeler is one person. She's a director. Whoopee. She's not the head writer, who's been doing a great job, or the executive producer.
Do you people think that at this point, after ATWT invested heavily in the Never Surrender campaign that the show is planning on committing suicide? It's the middle of a horrible recession. No one on this show in mgmt wants to find him/herself on the unemployment line. There's nowhere for them to go.
Again, get a grip. ATWT has been great lately.
I watched it today and had a blast.
