Guiding Light Sky Rockets in Final Week, as ATWT Becomes Daytime's Lowest Rated Soap

Who says you can't lure lapsed soap fans back? All it takes really is cancelling a sudser and droves of people will tune in for the final week. (Source: SON) That's what happened the week of Sept. 14-18, when a whopping 512,000 extra people watched Guiding Light head to the Great Soap Opera Museum in the Sky. This helped GL's year-to-date numbers as well, allowing the cancelled sudser to go up 547,000 viewers over this time last year. Well, at least P&G got to sell a few more bottles of Palmolive. They do make Palmolive right?

Demographically speaking, GL went up an insane four-tenths of a rating point for a 1.9, tying the soap with AMC in households and kicking As The World Turns boo tay. GL also went up three-tenths of a point among women 18-49. All-in-all a very good turn out for daytime's grande dame!

More eyeballs tuning in to CBS for GL's last week seemed to help the sudser's lineup mates as well. The Young and the Restless managed to get over five million viewers for the week. Y&R is also up year-to-date 239,000.Y&R held steady in households at a 3.6. Y&R also managed to hold steady among women 18-49. If someone would pen a juicy, soapy storyline for Y&R's black characters, and stop with all the depressing, macabre bull ish, I am convinced the show would get back over a 4.0. Hey Auntie Ri Ri, here are some movies for you to rent at Blockbuster this weekend: Boomerang, Waiting to Exhale, Eve's Bayou, Soul Food, Love Jones, Love & Basketball and How Stella Got Her Groove Back. Your late, great daddy-in-law hooked millions of  fans with Y&R's mocha Peyton Place stories for Dru, Malcolm, Neil and Liv. Sorry, we expect more from his heiress apparent.

Sister, or should that be brother-in-law soap The Bold and the Beautiful, added 116,000 viewers over the previous week. B&B held steady in households, but went down one-tenth of a ratings point in the coveted women 18-49 demo, tying its all-time low in that demo. The last P&G soap standing, As The World Turns, saw 140,000 new or lapsed viewers tune back in the week of Sept 14-18. Too bad it didn't help the soap in the demos, which I am forever being told is all the networks look at. ATWT stayed the same in households and among women 18-49, and officially became the lowest rated soap opera on daytime television. Chris Goutman just speed dialed Genie Francis to ask to her to play a madam/circus clown in Oakdale for 13 weeks.

Days of Our Lives continued to prove it is the mother freaking soap opera to beat, in terms of consistent ratings gains. DAYS added 150,000 total viewers and is up year-to-date 547,000 viewers. DAYS also went up one-tenth of a point in households, and is up an inspiring three-tenths of a point year-to-date in that demo. More importantly, DAYS went up two-tenths of a point among women 18-49, and is up three-tenth of a point in this most looked at ranking year-to-date!

Bad news for ABC's flagship soap this week. General Hospital lost 85,000 total viewers. GH also went down one-tenth of a point in households and women 18-49 respectively. GH is down year-to-date in both of those demos two-tenths of a point. Looks like viewers overall weren't as impressed by the carnival and its aftermath as we were here at DC. Port Charles, we have a problem!

Showing that nothing in the soap world makes a lick of sense, the increasingly-abysmal All My Children saw an increase of 137,000 bad television lovers. AMC is up year-to-date 68,000 total viewers. AMC stayed the same in households, but went up one-tenth of a point among women 18-49. Daytime's best soap opera, One Life to Live, went up 83,000 total viewers over the previous week. OLTL also went up one-tenth of a point in households (tying General Hospital, sans splashy promo campaign I might add) and held steady among women 18-49, tied with the soon-to-be relocating AMC. What does it say about ABC Daytime that GH's heavily-pimped storylines continue to garner less interest than its sister soaps? Inquiring minds in need of Ritalin wanna know! WATCH ONE LIFE TO LIVE!

Yay Y&R and GL!!!

Please people watch OLTL...I am a new viewer and that's a good soap with DIVERSITY!!! I just finished this week's episodes and I'm on the edge of my seat waiting for next week. You won't regret picking up this soap. Trust me! I am still getting adjusted to it though. I have been reading up on the back story of the show because as a new viewer some stuff has confused me but it's worth it.

I know people are not happy with the current state of All My Children but I, for one, do not want to see it leave the airwaves. I am not deny that AMC has its' problems but I hope that the ratings stay consistent enough for AMC and OLTL to be on for a long time to come.

GH, on the other hand, is another story. This show formerly known as General Hospital needs to be put out of its'misery out of all three ABC soaps. I have no clue what this show is or is about anymore. It surely does not resemble the General Hospital that we all grew up with. I know that soaps have to evolve to survive but clearly this is not General Hospital. TPTB have gotten rid of everything and everyone that is apart of the rich history that was General Hospital.

Long live OLTL and AMC!!!

Jamey or anyone, i have a question did we ever get to see Blake's sons, Jason and Kevin Marler, grow up on screen and become teens. They are Roger's only grandsons right. O what could have been, can u imagine. damn Ellen Wheeler. i think Roger Thorpe was one of the most complex characters ever. On the official P&G soap page, they are continuing the show via Mindy's twitter page and mentioned Leah flirting with Roger's grandsons, and Mindy not liking this. whats the backstory with Mindy and Roger again? Here is the link http://twitter.com/MelindaSueLewis. Thoughts, anyone? I cant believe they are trying to continue GL via twitter.

Reward good writing and diversity! Watch OLTL!!! Spread the word! There's a soap that features it over 50 vets, women and men, in front burner stories. Features people of color and gays. That's OLTL: One Life to Live!

Why the heck isn't ABC spreading the word about OLTL through a decent ad campaign? Why aren't they advertising online? It's cheap and an efficient way to communicate with targeted audiences.

I'm happy that OLTL beat GH in the ratings. I just wish that it could see some real gains. Diversity has to be rewarded. GH doesn't care about diversity. No brown folks. No GLBT folks. No stories for the over 50 vets (wheres Monica???)--unless its Luke the Puke related.

Although there are parts of GH that I like (CarJax,Olivia and Johnny), the obliteration of the Quartermaines and the lack of diversity bothers me.

As a fan of Y&R, I'm happy to see its ratings up but, again, the diversity sucks on Y&R for the moment. As Bryton tweeted, there's a little black box on the set of Y&R. Where are the Latino characters? Asians? OLTL has over 10 on-contract and regularly recurring characters. Y&R?

Y&R dismissed Nia Peeples shabbily. As much as I disliked the character of Tyra, making her sleep with her nephew as a way to force her out, was gross and sexist.

Agim,

The Marler boys stopped appearing on the show as elementary school aged children a few years ago. Not only were they Blake's kids, they were also Phillip's cousins.

Mindy and Roger had an affair while he was married to Alexandra Spaulding. It did not end well. There was also alot of bad blood between Roger and the Lewis family (even before the affair) so a connection to Roger would definitely be frowned upon.

As much as I once loved GL, I think it was time for it to end. I have been watching what it once was on youtube thanks to a WONDERFUL person who uploaded the Harley/Mallet relationship from the beginning through their wedding/leaving the show.

It's funny, when you watch something fade away gradually you don't quite see the decline as clearly as when you see it strong and vibrant one moment, faded the next -- This story reminds me of why I first got lost in soaps. It is a beautiful relationship story, with all the beats hit (I LOVE the scenes when Josh returns to town and visits Harley),-- a couple truly falling in love and then instead of them simply moving to another bed partner -- as would happen on almost any soap today -- they faced real challenges together. It has made me remember WHY I love soaps and I think I would rather use my soap viewing time to relive past stories than watch most of the messes on now. (OLTL and Y&R the exceptions.)

To answer your question, Palmolive is a product from the Colgate-Palmolive company, sponsors of the classic soap opera The Doctors.

I typed another reply for you on the last post your asked this question. Blakes twin sons aren't Roger's only grandsons. He has two other grandsons via his son Hart Jessup. Peter Reardon who mother is Bridget Reardon and R.J. who mother is Cassie Winslow.

I am confused a bit here - how does GH whoop its sister soaps but get edged out in households? I take it to mean that GH had more incidents of people in the same house watching together?

And I dont know how the year end down numbers work....I know for much of 2008 the rating was 2.0 and this week it was a 2.0 so how is that "down" do they take the highest number from the previous 12 months and go from there??

It shows that viewers will return if you give something to tune in for. This is the time for take no prisoners writing, and all we get is the same predictable garbage. Even on a show like OLTL which does creative stuff, a majority of the storylines are utterly predictable and/or misogynistic.

The Marler boys stopped appearing on the show as elementary school aged children a few years ago.

The Marler boys actually last appeared as pre-teens/teenagers at Ross' funeral. They and Clarissa are sitting next to Blake, and are later seen sitting together with Clarissa at Company while Blake talks to Rick.

Congrats to GL, for ending on a high note... As for the ABC soaps, first AMC, what could be said that hasn't already been said, "it's stupid", "a train wreck", "like watching paint dry", you name it. Maybe the CW and the new MP may want to hire Pratt back, take Frons and Craputhers with you. OLTL, well it is sad, I echo everything you guys say about the show, it doesn't get promoted as much as AMC and GH. Hopefully with Dan coming back as Kevin and Gina coming back as Kelly, maybe GL fans will follow her to OLTL. GH, well it has improved a lot lately, it is still very flawed. It is the anti-OLTL, it is not diverse, doesn't use its veterans, and doesn't uses their core families. And you know that the Liason fans are going to have a field day with GH's ratings. What is it going to take for Anne Sweeney to realize that it is not working and that Frons, the people at AMC and GH needs to be fired? I don't want what happen to GL, to happen to the ABC soaps.

GH is good right now , but when I looked at the episodes of that week I could see that it wasn't at is best ..
But I looked very closely at the ratings and I saw that when Jaam were in bed and were spotted by everyone and also there was the Sister talk with Jason the raring were high for the week .....
So maybe JaSam is good

good job GL & DAYS. Days is my fav right now. i miss guiding light. so many possibilities with that soap & ellen had to kill it. she should've killed off some of the characters and brought back some old characters that we actually cared for. get actors instead of hair models.

I'm wondering since GH was the only soap that went down this week if it was partly because of the GL finale. In many markets, including mine, GH airs at the same time as GL does. So I could see many GH viewers flipping over to CBS for a week to see the end of GL.

This week Stephano, Victor and especially Kate were wonderful and worth watching on Days. It was good this past week.

I have tuned into OLTL as a replacement for GL. While I have not watched the week in full, what I did watch was worth it.

Unfortunately for GH the magic is gone despite the big publicity that only hypes us up only to disappoint us as usual. Even Maxi and Spinelli do not have it anymore. I loved Patrick and Mac this week. More of them please.

I swear to god, I hate OLTL, I really really do. GH has gotten so good lately, I'm back to never missing an episode. I know everybody keeps bitching about it, my favorite couple is not paired up, it's not the old GH, freaking Quartermaines, yada yada. I personaly am enjoying the hell out of it and I have been a fan of GH for a little over 20 years. I started watching GH as a we lass. GH is still GH for me, it's no different for me now than when I started watching it, still love it. Change does not bother me, loss of certain characters, couples who break up and make up do not bother me. I go with the flow and am very happy with GH even though people say I shouldn't be because of this and that and what they don't like. I love it reguardless of the ratings that don't really represent daytime right.

Stopped watching Y&R. Everyone praying over Victor is horrible especially considering he is the cause of everything. Hate Paul will be alone again. Hate that Colleen (ANOTHER ABBOTT!!) is died.

I am in love with OLTL. This site always say how great OLTL is but I barely see a blog on it. There should be a OLTL summary each day like they have for GH. Todd and Tea is wonderful. I also like Blair and Tea's exhusband. I just hate Blair stalking Todd and harassing Tea. After a while it's gets annoying.

LOVE Rachel. I have never liked that actress back in the day. Well she was actually a playboy model but now I like her character but they have to get her away from Greg and Shaun. They have too. She's too sexy for them and she can actually act. That guy who plays Greg is horrible. He can't handle the serious stuff. He is good to look at and I do love seeing people of color on my screen. The only reason I started watch OLTL is because I turned there one day and saw Evangline on there and I started watching. They need to bring her back to go up against Rachel which will hurt Nora since she is Nora's friend. I love every storyline on OLTL except Natalie/Jared/Jessica. They need to get poor Brody away from them. "YES SHE CAN" Vote for Dr. Dorian Lord! Death to GH! That's what y'all get for breaking up Liason. Viva La Laison!!! See Frons, JaSam isn't the Jesus of daytime. They can't resurrect ratings! HA HA

Gl's last week ratings just proves people will watch if you keep them entertained. The last week of Gl was wonderful. So, Ellen what the hell where you waiting for why did it take getting canceled to kick out great story you dumb b! You and Barbara Bloom can both ride off on your broom sticks as far as I am concerned. I will never watch CBS again I am off to NBC/Days to watch Crystal Chappell kick a and take numbers! FYI D C pimping OLTL will not work most of us angry GL fans will watch DAYS.

Again, most of the 2008 Year of Jiz was a 2.0. If one believes that GH Ratings are completely dependent on who Jason gets paired with, (and I for one am not in that camp) then at worst the flip broke even.

You can love a show, as I love GH and have for years, but be disappointed in a show, as I have been for a number of years with GH. Even before the writer's strike, it was lacking, and I believe that was late 2007, early 2009.

It has little or nothing to do with the pairings. There are many pairings that I hope for right now on every show, even if something else is on my screen. Anticipation and hope that my couples will come to pass makes me a soap fan in the first place. On GH, much of my hope has to do with Dante, Patrick and Mac, not Sonny and Jason and Nik anymore, they seem tired and old these days and yet it is they who take up much of the screen time.

Yes, GL was great in the final hours and I daresay months. However, GL was abysmal for years. Did I stop watching? I did not however a fan can still be critical. We invest alot of time watching our soaps.

Therefore, I refuse to let GH off the hook. They have fans 18-49 who are tuning out. I am in that group. I have not tuned out. However, it is my least favorite soap out of the 3 (OLTL instead of GL theses days) I watch.

I refuse to say that 5 good shows out of one month are good enough. It is not. I refuse to get over the fact that the storytelling has been uncreative and repetitive. Fan fiction tells me there are great GH stories yet untold. As a woman who is 45 years old and has watched soaps since I was 14, I can tell you, GH is missing the boat with me. I have not tuned out yet but it does not mean I don't fast forward or erase some the episodes that I don't get to that week.

Ratings should be acknowledged. Criticism is allowed. Many of us fear that GH's fate could go the way of GL. Ellen Wheeler ignored fans for years if you remember.

I never said Laison was GH's savior but like what Jamey said in a podcast, if GH had given Liason at least a little bit of a love story, there's no telling what could have happened. But Frons think JaSam will bring in all these huge ratings and they haven't. GH as a show is horrible. As long as they center the show around the evil trilogy of Sonny/Jason/Carly, it will never be the same. When I first started watching GH in 93, I could not think of one character I hated. I actually liked all the characters just at various degrees. I loved all the families especially the Cassadines. But after GH started the whole "use Aj as a whipping boy" storyline then started doing that to other characters (Ric/Lucky) I started hating it and some characters like Sonny. I hate when GH started to make some characters evil to make others look good or to redeem some characters. I still can't believe people still use the word Jiz to describe Jason and Liz. That's just nasty and it has nothing to do of my love for Liz.

I too hate that they have turned Lucky into such a lame loser and I agree its the AJ factor, but I still dont wish "DEATH TO GH". I get that its disappointing to lose a beloved couple and as someone who had to sit through the disgusting character assassination of Sam and JaSam I can appreciate those sentiments, but the idea "thats what y'all get" (and I am assuming by that you mean flat ratings), isnt a helpful statement in terms of saving the show that a true fan would want to see continue. And lets not forget when we wish ANY soap failure it further endangers the industry as a whole. I guarantee tptb will pull the plug on OLTL before they would cancel GH and should the ratings remain stagnant in spite of improvements in the writing, they are going to look at things like lead ins from other shows.

I dont watch CBS or NBC but I certainly do not want to see those shows experience drops in their viewership. There is a saying that a rising tide lifts all boats - thats what I will celebrate and wish for.

I am not going to have the nickname argument again. All i will say is that I wish we had a search function on here, but you can go to google and put in crotch crickets and Sam and find at least two of the many times that one was used. After "Fillet-o-crotch crickets" I think Jiz seems sort of tame.

I expected to see a drop in GH ratings as it was the end of the much touted and surprisingly good Carnival. Do I want to continue to see drop in ratings no way. No matter how much I hate certain storylines I would rather FF than not watch.

As for the mention of JaSam bed scene being the high point of the week, let's just put in prospective that when Sexico in Mexico happened which was highly pimped the show tanked. Maybe the best thing for GH to do is to continue to throw those sex scenes in and not tell anyone.
