Y&R's Bryton James "Wants Out Of Black Box"
By Jillian Bowe on September 23, 2009

Actor Bryton James has chimed in on Twitter with his opinions regarding the status of blacks on The Young and the Restless. James wrote,

How about mix "us" up with the actors we have instaed of bringing on new ones? I want out of our "black box"... Still happy to be working.
When asked for a bit of clarification on his tweet, James replied,
I mean that the Winters have stories with the Winters, with the exception of Lily.
Can I get a CHAPTER with that folks!?

You know I'm not a fan of chapter but this one time I will say it..............CHAPTER!!!!!!!
He is a great young adult actor on the show and it's a shame that Y&R has not been using him on a regular basis. Instead we get the chipmunk gang (Daniel,Amber,Kevin,Jana) while Devon is MIA. Makes no sense at all. Dang on shame! GIVE DEVON AND NEIL WINTERS A STORYLINE!!!

Jillian, I hope that you go off on MAB and Co. for the lack of s/ls and the horrible treatment of the Winters family on the next CBS/Days podcast.

where have you been? Jillian and the rest of the DC gang have already discussed there gripes about Y&R in several of the past CBS/DAYS podcast. The treatment of the Winters family was one of their gripes.

Glad he spoke up BUT I see that backfiring on him. MAB & Rauch Dont play. Mr James could find himself unemployed soon

Appleridge is right.
Sadly, Bryton is not on contract at Y&R. So, it's pointless to expect him to be used as many of us wish he (or Kristof and Tonya) were. The reality is that tomorrow Daniel or Lily or Jill could say, "Oh, I heard Devon moved to live with his Aunt Virginia." And, that would be that.
Victoria Rowell has also stirred things up my tweeting that Kristoff St. John would be off for 90 days. Maybe that was the genesis of Kristoff St. John's Facebook posting in which he had to slam down rumors that he was leaving Y&R:
"Kristoff St John is making this statement; "I do not plan on leaving Y and R anytime in the near or distant future! The internet is plagued with rumors! Do not listen to false gossip! I have no desire to leave the landscape of Genoa City! Realize that story tell...ing is cyclical, and my non-presence on the show is merely a "Vacation"! I love all of my friends! Thank you for your support and concern! Loose lips sink ships!"
I think the last sentence speaks volumes: "Loose lips sink ships!"
As for Paul Rauch's opinion, look over his recent interview with Nelson Branco to see the performers he values. Not a Winter is mentioned...

Yikes, is Cristel Khalil hard to work with? This is the second person that basically called out the actress.
I don't care for her personally, and I still miss Davetta Sherwood
I am guessing that MAB may be trying to write out the Winters clan. This certainly won't help. Twittering will be the death of these characters. Michael Muhney will find that out very soon!

Bryton is still on contract. I asked him on twitter today. He tweeted that he was still on contract.

Appleridge, is Brotherton gone? If so, I owe an offering to the soap god.

AngrierBlackman,
You misconstrued Bryton's tweet. He is not criticizing Christel Khalil. He is saying that only she works consistently and with most of the cast, not just the black folks.
I would strongly encourage you not to spread any false rumors about Christel Khalil. Look at Bryton's Twitter page and you will see that he expresses nothing but affection for Christel and her husband.

" @ChristelAdnana I love you more!!! I'm good, how are you my sista from another Mr.?about 7 hours ago from Echofon in reply to ChristelAdnana"
" @THISISHENSLEY I love you my man!about 10 hours ago from Echofon in reply to THISISHENSLEY"
Similarly, Khalil was the one who tweeted that people follow Bryton on Twitter.

Seriously, let's not make trouble for these folks. There are very few African-Americans on daytime. Don't jump to conclusions, especially when you can find the answers very quickly.

Smitty,
I stand corrected. I had read in Soap Opera Digest that Bryton had been dropped to recurring. I'm happy that isn't true.

Well another one saying more and less the same thing!
Must be true, instead of only someone flapping her mouth like I read so much. :::Insert big sarcasm sign here::::
It is a man saying it, must be true too!
If it walks like a duck and quack like a duck might be...wait for it... racism::: running for my life here::::

This seems to echo what Victoria Rowell has said in the past.
Also i remember when Carlos Bernard was on the show and he quit after he was offered a 3yr contract. He said they made him into a "stereotypical Hispanic" character and he did not want to play that and that is why he quit.

Sadly he is right on with his statement. It has been a weakness of YR for way too long to segregate the black characters in "black storylines" with all too brief moments of integration.
