Y&R's Itchy Twitchy Feelin'
By Luke Kerr on September 17, 2009

I swear, while watching The Young and the Restless today, as everyone and their mother started getting bad feelings about Colleen, I half expected Guiding Light's Alexandra Spaulding to pop out from behind a bush singing Bobby Hendricks' "Itchy Twitchy Feelin'." I've never been a fan of Tammin Sursok's Colleen, but as Jamey, Jillian, Mike and Mel have all pointed out on the podcast on multiple occasions, another Abbott shouldn't be the one to die.

What did you think of today's Y&R episode and Don Diamont's cameo as a thawed out Bradsicle?

I, too, hate that an Abbott legacy character had to die. But it was a beautifully written, acted and produced episode. As a tearjerker, it definitely achieved its goal.
And seeing Don Diamont's Brad at the end of the episode, grasping Colleen’s hand, truly tied it together. The episode would not have had the resonance if Brad had not been present.

I think it was nice that they had Brad come over and have a cameo, after all, they film right across the hall from one another! But I think her death is unnecessary. It's like the Newmans prosper, but you have to sacrifice an Abbott? I think of all the families on the show, it's too Newman-heavy as it is. I liked Colleen butting heads with holier-than-thou Victoria. But I thought Brad would want his daughter to live, not take her to the other side. What a waste of a character!

I still want to know how one episode ended with her in a canoe next to a dock and then in the next episode, she is all of a sudden at the bottom of a lake. How did this child end up in the water? This seems like poor editing or poor writing to me.

A waste of a character. I thought they should have just recasted or had the character leave the canvas. Now Tracy is motherless and the character of Brad pretty much has his slate wiped.
That said I thought the episode was pretty good.

I may be in the minority, but I liked Tammin Sursok's Colleen far better than Adrienne Leone's. The latter always portrayed a very immature character while the former can easily be Colleen, the fiesty young woman. Therefore, losing Sursok AND Colleen was doubly troublesome. As others have said, it was unnecessary to kill the character. The one and ONLY reason to kill her would be to reform Victor. The chances of that happening are nil--at least long-term.

I just watched it. I did choke up a little bit. Wht kill off Colleeen? Seriously, don't kill off the legacy characters, ship them off or put them in coma, but don't kill them off.

I hate that they KILLED another ABBOTT, but this episode was done like no other show on daytime could do!!! I mean this episode had me on edge and even had my eyes tearing up. I think the icing on the cake was when Brad came on at the end. I just couldn't believe it and it made my heart ache. I love that Steve is back for Traci. It's been quite awhile since we last saw him. Beth Maitland has been hitting it out of the park as a worried mother for her daughter. She alone has been breaking my heart this week. I kind of keep hoping that this Colleen dying is just a dream but I guess it isn't. I have been on the edge of my seat for Y&R all week and this show is just hitting it out of the park. I feel like everyone has been stepping up lately.

As with GH and the killing of "Legacy" characters who would be the FUTURE of the show, I think Y&R casual disposal of a legacy character is evidence of Soaps lack of confidence that there will be a FUTURE for the show long enough to warrant planting long term seeds for future story. They simply will not need that next generation of characters...

I agree w/the "not another Abbott!?" posts.....I'm Team Abbott on this show - Not Team Newman....
Tammin really grew on me in the past few months. I didn't 'dislike' her when she was recast...I just stopped liking her character after she cheated on JT (!!!!!) with that boring, creepy Professer Gerbil...
WOULDN'T ABBY have been a better choice to ditch into a swamp like that?? (okay, I know it's a lake) A) I personally cannot stand Abby and B) Victroller brings Patty to town and she has a hand in his daughter's demise?? JUICY STUFF, PEOPLE!!
If Y&R / CBS is looking to cut payroll, I would have been more than happy to see any of the following Characters leave the canvas. (in no particular order)
A) Abby Carlton
B) Devon Hamilton
C) Michael's sister. Eden is her name? HA!
D) *don't kill me* McKenzie. Ugh
E) Heather Stevens (her aunt does her in!!)
I should just be thankful that Billy, Jack, Chloe and MY MURPHY are still safe today.
I think I'll miss Colleen....

It was pure garbage. Offensive and tacky. Rauch and Sheffer are ruining this show!

I'm very sad to see Colleen go and to see Tracy, one of my all time favorite Y&R characters, lose her only child. I do think that was one of the best verbal sparring matches between Jack and Victor. More props to my boy Jack because he wasn't having it.

Wow. I thought the episode was TERRIBLE. Horribly and tackily produced (Never thought I would see the day when I said that about Y&R.
I thought it was seriously laughable. And for an "EMMY BAIT" episode, I truly wonder how much life this genre has left.
I could care less about Colleen, and that is a fault of writing and i guess casting..
Y&R is as bad as every other soap at this point. OLTL is a mixed bag but at least watchable.
Very sad that Y&R has lost everything that made it special. Beautiful production, intimate character relationships, characters who actually WORKED, boardroom drama.. and most of all CHARACTER DRIVEN writing..
If Nelson raves about this episode I will slit my wrists in disgust.

Seriously, I mean SERIOUSLY!?!?!? WTF!?! They KILLED another ABBOTT. You don't do that. You don't kill legacy characters. As Jamey said in the CBS & Days edition of the DC podcast ... that's LML style. That is no better than LML.
The acting can be on it's best, the episode even can make you cry, but it doesn't excuse for one minute that you killed off a legacy character. Needless to say that you killed off the only child of Traci Abbott and Brad Carlton.
That's a crime! And I just don't understand it how you can even go there if you really understand the show. If you know that a soap opera is about generations and how they fit into each other then you don't do that.
Not to have Tammin Sursock in the role is one thing, but killing the character off that's another story. That's not anything anyone wanted. Viewers still suffering from the death of John Abbott, because after this nothing was ever the same at the Abbott Mansion. Half year ago you kill off Brad Carlton ... and now six months later they kill off his daughter, who also was an Abbott. That's cruel and wasn't necessary. Not at all.
The episode was a solid one. But not more. Having Don Diamont there was great too, but in the end it just doesn't excuse this SOAP CRIME.

I actually thought this episode was well written, but having the characters John Abbott and Brad Carlton make a cameo appearance just reminded me about how the writers killed off two important characters without thought.
Also I agree with an earlier poster , why is it that the Newman family never suffers any loss? Within a year we have seen John, Brad, Ashley's baby, Colleen all die. With the exception of Zapato, what loss has the Newman family suffered lately? I guess having Adam and Abby part of the family is punishment enough!!

Was Brad's clean shaven face a CGI effect or can we look forward to Mr. Diamont shaving off that awful goatee on B&B?
I also worry that the loss of Colleen also means a loss of Tracy. Without Colleen and Brad in G City, Tracy has less of a reason to return to town and I would miss her and the newly returned Steve. BTW, its a good call back to get Steve back after having raised Colleen for many years.

I hate it when soaps kill off core family characters especially ones born on the show. YR could've easily sent Colleen off the canvas or recasted the role without killing the character for shock value.
BTW caught the last few minutes before BB and it was nice to see Brad for a few seconds..it's just too bad the only daughter of Traci and Brad is now apparently dead. To the poster above I believe DD taped this during BB's summer sabbatical so that is why he was able to shave the beard but he already grew it back and was sporting it during the emmies.

I like Tracy, she can really stand up to her siblings! Tracy does not take garbage from anyone! She is not the shy, insecure young woman I remember when she used to live in Genoa City! I used to love watching her and Lauren in scenes together. I bet Tracy would wipe the floor with Lauren now!

They should have killed off Amber, Lily, or MAC (or better yet, all three of them). Not another ABBOTT.

If I hear the words legacy character one more time.... Characters die on soaps and sometimes I don't see anything wrong with killing off a "legacy character". Killing off Colleen will increase the hostility between the Abbotts and the Newmans. Her death could be the final nail in the coffin for JT and Victoria's marriage. This will also put most of the town at odds with Victor. Not only the Abbotts but his own children and wife. What ever relationship he was trying to build with Abby will be destroyed. This could also lead to a who shot Victor s/l.
Sometimes you have to minimize in order to maximize. Yes, John and Colleen are dead but you still have Jack, Ashley, Billy, and Tracy. I'm sure in the future we'll see Kyle and hopefully Keemo. There are just as many Abbott namesakes as there are Newmans.
Overall, I liked the episode. The background looked like an impressionist painting and the episode at least centered on the character and showed how many people loved and cared about her. I especially liked the scenes with Kevin and Jana and how her forgiveness helped and also saved them and how they may have to forgive others. When Brad took her by the hand they was by far the most touching scene.

Okay, that episode blew me away! I am not an emotional person but after seeing the episode and Brad at the very end. I was so moved by this. I thought the show was FANTASTIC. Kudos to the staff, writers and actors of Y&R! I also agree the scene between Jack and Victor were one of the best scenes they have ever had. Those two really hate each other and the two actors bring that hate to life. Just great acting!

Hate that another Abbott is dead, but from a technical point of view, i thought it was brilliant! the impressionalist background was a homage to Colleen's love for art, and I thought all the actors did a wonderful job. Should this be Y&R's Emmy submission? Not really, but it should definately be a consideration

Hate that they killed an Abbott, loved that Brad and John were there, wonder why they want to drown the entire Carlton family. Is Abby next? Geez.

CC has been dead for quite a while since TS was cast therefore I could care less about this character being killed off. I felt nothing in this episode which was very cheaply produced, written and acted!! I also didn't feel anything when Brad came to guide her into the light.

This was a stupid move on MAB's part, because now they have killed off 2 great characters. Colleen...and Mary Jane. Mary Jane has been written into a corner now. They will have to have her shipped off, which mean the lovely talented Stacy Haiduk will be let go soon.
I never liked Tammin Sursuck, but I always liked Colleen on the canvas. MAB is not gonna rest until she is as horrible as Julie Carruthers, and until Y&R's ratings dive.

Today's (Friday) episode (while I only caught the first 30 on my lunch hour) is GREAT (eh - except the Lily garbage. MAN, she annoys me!)
Is there a way the writers can redeem Patty?? I soooo hope so...IMO, she adds to much to these stories....
Speaking of annoying- - PAGING ASHLEY!! You'll understand when you watch....The whole Abbott Clan (what's left of them - plus that annoying Sludge, Abby) are worried about Colleen and all Assley can do is wring her psychotic hands about Grampa's werabouts (Victor)
Bonus: Peter Bergman running through the woods!! Tee! Hee!! I dunno, it just made me "LOL"!!

Is she really dead? I only catch Y&R every once in awhile. I used to be a faithful viewer back in the day but there are only so many hours a week I can spare for television so I gave my soap time to GH.
I happened to catch today's episode...my daughter stumbles out of her bedroom about the time Jack & Patty are having their confrontation and she's not making any snarky remarks (she is not a soap fan)...she's just watching.
At the commercial she gets up to run to the kitchen and says...I CANNOT believe you watch General Hospital when you could be watching this. This is GOOD.
We sat down and watched the rest of the show and during the commercials I gave her the backstory on the characters I know. Bonding over Y&R...who knew?
I thought the Y&R fans would enjoy that little story.

These episodes (particularly Friday's US) are fantastic in terms of the writing & acting. The show is almost starting to look like it's old self again. I'm really pulling for the show. But I cannot fathom why an Abbott has to die (unless it was Abby). The actors, as always, are at the top of their game. I'm still torn though, because they're killing the wrong people.

I have watched Y&R for yrs and yrs. and I know Ashley had her breakdown yrs ago but this whole summer the show has stunk. Making Ashley so weak and crazy bad move. Victors son started out this hunk and its horrible writing beginning with Ashley finding Victor to begin with. Nick back and forth like a yoyo they have him acting like ridge from bb. Dont like it at all. Sharon is like a whore and everyones all over her like shes the poor victim. Marriages end. Billys over the top, cant stand this Mac. Everyone forget her relationship with JT and the baby etc. Some shows I sware the writers forget people have watched since start of show. We dont have amnesia. Billy and Clohe are hot together. Just like Ridge and Brook no matter how beautiful Taylor was there were never sparks with Hunter and anyone its not there.
I just love Don(AS Bill) on bb way better then his character Brad. I cant take my eyes off him on bold and he and Heather are hot. good match.
