Kim Zimmer Sounds Off About Guiding Light

In what one hopes will be the first of many, daytime's legendary and most outspoken actress Kim Zimmer granted Nelson Branco of TVGuide.ca an interview guaranteed to drop jaws! While the insightful and often hilarious talk covers everything from Ms. Zimmer's new TV-movie gig to her desire to be on Dancing with the Stars (Maksim, watch out!), it is her views on Guiding Light and its demise that are sure to raise eyebrows. Among La Zimmer's many quotables, this one stands out:

... if I was in Ellen Wheeler’s position, I would have said, “You are raping the show. No, I won’t produce GL this way.” I give Ellen credit for trying to be the second coming. [Laughs] I had a really hard time with the new production model because it affected how the writers wrote our show — and that killed us in the end.

If that wasn't enough, Zimmer's perspective adds an additional extra dimension to what killed GL:

I think the beginning of the end, for us at least, came when P&G dropped the executive that oversaw our soaps. When Mickey Dwyer-Dobbins was systemically removed from her eliminated position, Ellen Wheeler and [World Turns executive producer] Christopher Goutman didn’t have anyone to answer to. I was a fan of Dobbins — and I know this sounds like I’m old school, but I am old school. Your producers and writers must be held accountable to someone other than the fans.

With Guiding Light scheduled to end its final episodes Spetember 14 - 18, this is a must read for not only fans of GL but soap watchers everywhere. Find all the juicy goodness here.

Count me as one of the few who liked the new model. Yes it was bad at first, but it came into its own overtime. And I say if the show was like it was now when the model premiered the show would've not lost as many viewers as it did and I stand by that, but I will counter that in saying that P&G needed to give a damn about the show. I am a fan of story most important. Yeah glamor is nice, but story and good acting has to come first. and given all of the stuff concerning Ellen's beliefs coming in the way of things and all of the other behind the scenes bull this is what the show has become. Even though I find it interesting to watch, it is noting like it was once before. And as for the Zimmer you gotta love Miss diva Reva and I don't think Frons could handle her b/c she's a women of a certain age who speaks the truth and would shame that devil, but I do wish this powerhouse continued success.

Very good article I agree Frons would be scared of Zimmer lol and maybe he should be more afraid of his vet actors. The new filming style bought the show time but it took to long for look good and certain characters didn't work well with it and I think the Reva character was one of those.

Great interview! Of course Zimmer can't say absolutely everything that's on her mind...we have to wait for the book;) But for now, this is the most honest conversation I've heard from anyone in the GL camp. And it wasn't bitter! You can totally tell that she loved the show and the character. I'm sad GL is leaving, but this article left me with a smile, just a lot of good memories.

I wonder...did she blame someone else for getting stuck playing Reva opposite Bradley Cole's Jeffery?

Alot of people didn't like MADD and there's a reason. Did Zimmer forget that? If GL got cancelled when MADD was in charge, would her memory be convienent and blame MADD? Just wondering. Yeah, the new format sucked. It could of been able to work with good writing. Don't underestimate good writing after all. There was no writing for awhile.

I too didn't like the new production but I don't think that killed the show; soaps are dying GL was the first to go; it's time to stop beating a dead horse. Look how bizarre Y&R is getting.

Wishful casting for Zimmer? Bring her to GH and put her in a triangle with Luke and Tracy...allow the actors to ad lib their entire story. Smile

Moving Guiding Light from it's afternoon slot to mid-mornings in some markets (including the New York area) was the first nail in the coffin.
The new production model and the move to Peapack, bought the show time, but eventually failed when story failed to entertain and keep the audience that was not scared away by the change in appearance.
Soaps are a dying breed and GL is NOT the first casualty, only the most recent.

Please...LW is a very average actress so the Cassie/Josh pairing would have failed with her too. It was an awful idea to begin with. And to be honest, LW is not so great as Carly either.

I agree about LW, elvara, if anything Nicole Forrester is a much better actress.

I so want KZ's book

Whoa ! Well Kim Zimmer always makes interesting reading. I am surprised to read she was a fan of MADD? Maybe it is one of those things that you don't realize how good you had it until it's gone (MADD)?

Plus, wasn't it MADD who said those terrible comments about Michael Zaslow? Aiy yi yi....

As for GL's ratings...I never bought into the idea that the timeslot caused the ratings woes...Now I am beginning to think that maybe if GL had swapped timeslots with ATWT, ATWT would be the one going away on September 18...GL aired in mornings in a lot of markets and I guess that really didnt help.

Speaking of markets - Los Angeles.
I just found out that Rachael Ray will be taking over GL's 2pm-3pm timeslot.

Let's Make A Deal will air at 9AM in Los Angeles, right before the Price is Right at 10AM.

Good luck with that!

One of the best interviews I have read in a long time. it wasn't just 5 questions and a plug for some project, it went there. I've been waiting for KZ to give an interview since the show wrapped so this was a long time coming for me. But next time please start with interviewing the biggest DIVA of the show: Caitlin VanZandt!

joking!

So catty, I love it! LOL Great interview Nelson! Nelson and Zimmer should interview more often, he gets some great quotes and gossip out of her!
Hope this book comes out, I will definately buy it first day if it does. And I hope she tells everything about Ellen Wheeler and her horrible attempt at "saving" GL!
Also love how she slammed Nicole Forrester, who was a horrible Cassie recast! So true that Nicole didn't play it the way it should have been played, and totally agree that Laura Wright wouldn't have played Josh and Cassie as a true couple.
Come on Nelson, let's get another interview with Zimmer when the book comes out!

It seems odd to have a daytime soap opera pass on. When good shows have been around for what seems like forever you just expect them to always be there. Although it's a different genre, I remember how sad I was when the sitcom "Cheers" finally ended. It was like a death in the family. I just loved how all the regulars (Sam, Diane, Cliff, Norm, Woody, Frazier, and Carla) interacted with one another and became part of my life. Well, nothing lasts forever. I guess I thought soap operas would always be the exception. casino

Thanks for the link. Great interview, got a lot of info!
P&G key person gone-no one for ex prod. to account to & other stuff that factors into the demise of GL.

(Reva's daughter Marah & Jeffrey-yikes! No wonder no one comes home for Thanksgiving)

Is genuinely happy for breakout Otalia story for the show and has affection and respect for Crystal.

She took no souvrnir from the show except the last script? Maybe because the sets were only a few years old so there is nothing sentimental about them?

Was the mantel from the original Cross Creek set? Didn't it have a carving that's iconic to Josh & Reva?

Could have put stuff up for auction and given money to charity.

I wonder if Kim kept a diary? LOL! Her book should have some good tidbits that's for sure.

I like when she gives these frank interviews. And no matter how crappy the format on GL became, it was ALWAYS better than anything happening on All My Children (IMO)...that show only has like 4 sets.
