Frank Dicopoulos on Guiding Light's Emmy Tribute "Well, They Cut Us Off...Great"

If anyone has read my Live Blogging of the Daytime Emmys, you already know my feelings on the Guiding Light Tribute. Apparently, I'm not alone in my feelings. Frank Dicopoulos who portrays Frank Cooper was live Tweeting from the Emmys and this was his response to the tribute.

Well, They Cut Us Off...Great

It was just disrespectful!

I agree with you Melodie! The tribute was shorter than only one of the Sesame Street songs. I thought the cast would at least be able to say something after 72 years, but they barely had the chance to bow before the hook came out and dragged them off stage! How can one summarize 72 years into 90 seconds? I did love Betty White though! Really, who doesn't!

The reality is the clock doesn't know respect from disrespect. It's just the way it goes. They could have cut that last Vanessa Williams number, though. It was late enough in the show that they knew how they were doing for time.

I'm personally bummed that Grover was nowhere to be seen in the Sesame Street segment. That bitch, Elmo, totally All-About-Eved Grover back in the 90s. I guess I'll be digging out my Torture-Me-Elmo tonight.

And while we're talking about Sesame Street, where were Bert and Ernie. In this era when every soap is trying to wedge in a same-sex couple, where the hell were the trendsetters! Shame. For shame! Wink

They should of cut Vanessas last dance/singing number but I guess it wasnt exactly CW's fault that the show went long and they had to cut stuff but really this is GLs last hurrah and it feels like another kick in the teeth to them and the fans.

There was enough filler that they could have cut out something to give the Guiding Light cast more time and allow the people from Bold and the Beautiful to say something. But if they had to go a little over 2 hours to pay respect to the longest running serial drama then they should have. It's not like the other awards ceremonies don't go on long nearly every year.

I TVO the Daytime Emmy Awards only for the GL tribute. And I must say that so dispectful to just cut them off like that and go to commerical. This a show of depth and enrich history. And instead of scanning the room, the camera operators should have been showing the entire cast of GL...Not finished"! How come Robert Newman and Kim Zimmer were not allowed to say to something to the fans after 72 years of being air. Wait not done.....The almighty killer EP of the show Ellen Wheeler was MIA....And petition you Jamie and Melodie to recruit Ellen show, Good Morning America or the Oprah show to give GL is proper send off with the ensemble cast and flashbacks thats depicts it excellence. Shame on you CW and Ellen for not even having the guts to face the fans tonight:(

I'm a member of the Otalia forum and the admin said she had a copy of the full tribute she said it got cut down from the preshow. Also wasnt actors from the B&B suppose to pay tribute as well?

I think it was rude to cut the Guiding Light tribute. They paved the way for daytime drama and they both earned and deserved their tribute! But they'll go on and play that entire Sesame Street thing?

That was horrible... I was looking foward to seeing soo much more... not what i say... yes i realize thtat they are running short on time but that is not excuse.... they are cancelling the longest running show in the history of daytime and they cut it short ..... at least we saw Reva bapiste herself... I am glad that that was shown.....

I am very dispointed with the emmys... the started out great and the turn to horrible....

As a viewer who used to watch GL growing up...not so much today...I was looking forward to the GL tribute. Well the montage was lackluster and then they cut the cast off which caught me way off guard. I thought that was tacky and I don't care if we should be happy that the CW just did something. I mean if we have to settle for a show like this for the Daytime Emmys then I would rather not see them at all. 72 years of history and they cut this tribute short. It was very disrespectful and it clearly makes sense why daytime is dying.

GL you deserve better and I hope the 60 minutes tribute does you all justice!

At50, The CW isn't like the other networks. They don't have the luxury of "going long". At 10pm (eastern), the individual channels take over from the network feed. No exceptions. There was no option. As I've already written, though, though, they could have cut Vanessa Williams' musical performance. It's a shame for fans of GL & B&B.

Award shows always run long. They should have known that and cut the last musical number. It was so useless.

I was so sad to see that weak GL tribute. It went by so fast, I could barely make out everyone that was on the stage, and then, just like that, cut to commercial. GL is legendary, and its just not getting any respect or love lately. They definitely could have cut some of that other stuff, like Williams singing her second song among other things, and I am a VW fan. Sigh.

I adore Betty White but they could have cut her shorter or had Vanessa Williams announce a tribute to GL which would have given more time to the tribute...which by the way was no reflection about the true staying power the show once had...glad CW covered it but didn't see much promo about the Emmy telecast...thank you GUIDING LIGHT for allowing me to visit your town!

Don't even get me started on the disrespect shown to GL (short tribute) and B&B (no televised acceptance speech)! Just awful! Plus the fact that the Emmys were airing on The CW and not ABC or CBS, I didn't expect to see any promos for the daytime shows. To my suprise, not once, but twice, there was the GH Carnival Promo! Can I ask who Brian Frons slept with to make this happen? You would think that since this was aired on an unbiased network, there would be no daytime promos at all or they would equally promote them all.

I'm so there with you on Grover. I posted the same thing on Facebook. I grew up in the pre-Elmo Sesame Street days and Cookie Monster and Grover were my favorites. I was so sad my Grover wasn't there.

Just read the ratings Of course The Emmys had the lowest ratings they've ever had (i'm not shocked their on one of the smaller networks not the big 4 and not everyone gets the CW) but they posted the highest numbers the CW has seen in a very long time on Sunday so here's hoping they'll elect to air it next year.

I really did not expect a lot of clips of GL. The fact that they had any at all was a victory. They don't show all of the acting clips on any of the other Emmy shows in the past.

Could of shown more of the cast though. So bad they got cut off! Their close ups went by like lightning! To many wide shots from the ceiling & back, & audience. Needed even 45 seconds more of the cast at least.

It was the last cast of the first and longest running soap opera after all.

Just a shame!

The show last night was a travesty--just a forum for the new CW11 lineup and to show off Vanessa Williams. The show is not fun anymore. Poor Betty White--she was there to pay tribute and it was nothing but self-serving. And then to not let B&B make their acceptance speech after 22 years. I will be boycotting CW11. Will miss Guiding Light and Frank, thanks for the many years of great acting.

i posted yesterday that i thought it was a nice tribute & i still think it was. i did not go into it expecting much. yes they should have shown GL a little more respect, tribute should have been longer, some vets should have been able to say a few words. but just the way GL has been treated, this wasnt a surprise. and im not a B&B viewer but they deserved to have their time too. it just shows the little respect the networks & the emmys have for soaps. what can you do. love that FD posted that though!

That's a nice reality check, soapfan78. Sometimes I think we come to message boards just to gripe and moan, but I believe you have a valid point. This world is spinning so fast, it's hard to get ANY fringe entertainment to be recognized in the mainstream. I was grateful to see what I did last night.

Read Frank's Tweets! He seems to be up to something. He just said "I couldn't sleep so I had to talk to you all! I have so much on my mind! I really think we can save this show in some capacity..........I have the opportunity to make a pitch in three weeks to a very powerful group. I think I have just come up with that idea! I am up for ..any suggestions. If you have any ideas please don't hesitate. P&G wants this show to go on in some capacity! Very expensive to produce!!!"

Coveyjr,

GL is dead as we know it. There may be hope as a text-based serial, like "Another World Today" but otherwise, GL is done. The cast is in the 4 winds.

Frank D is a good actor. I will miss him and hope for the best for him and his family. The truth is that for Frank and many of the other middle-class actors on GL, this is the pinnacle of their careers. There is no other steady, well paying acting job that will come along for them. Their chances of landing on another soap are minuscule just as they are for finding a gig on a TV show.

I'd like to let you all know that the tribute to GL being so short was not Michael Fairman's fault (he put together the piece). The original piece was 4 minutes long and he wanted it to stay intact. Unfortunately, the producers of the Emmy's said no. I was able to actually see the entire 4 minute tribute that Michael put together. If you'd like to see it, please click on the link below:

http://www.michaelfairmansoaps.com/news/newsItem.cfm?cms_news_id=595

I got to see this via my online cbssoaps group on yahoogroups.com this morning. It is a beautifully done piece and I actually emailed Michael and apologized for vilifying him here on daytimeconfidential for the shortness of the tribute.

This piece was put together with a lot of love that came out of Michael's heart for this show. So, please be sure to thank him for putting it together!

Michael (another Michael, not Michael Fairman. LOL)

The 4 minute video is soooo much better, and its sad that they couldn't add the extra couple of minutes yet had a longer tribute for Seasame Street's annniversary (?!?!?!?) and a dance number instead?
Poor GL, disrespect all over the place. She deserved better.
