Guiding Light Films Final Episode
By J Bernard Jones on August 06, 2009

Today August 6, Guiding Light filmed its very last episode, so says Paul Anthony Stewart (Danny) via Twiiter:
Filming GL's final episode today! Here with Nancy [St. Alban, Michelle] and all. Crystal Chappell just taught me how to tweet from my phone. Hope this works!
Thus ends 72 years of broadcast history.
The final episode is slated to air on September 18, 2009.

One of the saddest things about this post is the lighthouse image that names some of the best soaps that ever existed. To know that those are the ones that we lost too soon is just heartbreaking.

Aren't they filming out of order such that the episode filmed today may be the final ep but there is still more filming to be done?

I never really watched GL except to sample it when Reva was cloned, but I will watch the final episode, as I have watched the final episode of every soap since 1997:
-The City
-Another World
-Sunset Beach
-Port Charles
-Passions
-and now, GL

How very sad, especially since there's a RUMOR floating around that Rick BAUER will be dead before the Finale.
My heart goes out to the cast and crew except for Ellen W. and David K.-- You two are dispicable. Also Barbra Bloom-- You are the worst!!
I still can't picture not watching GL Monday-Friday.
God I'm going to miss this show.

It's really sad that the show is really going to be over in a little more than a month!!!! I think we are all going through denial. I hope fans of other shows won't have to go through this anytime soon!
Joss, I believe 8/14 is when the production of the show (editing, etc.) stops. Seems they may reshoot scenes if they have to after today, but filming is pretty much done.

I heard that Tina Sloan said they were filming until August 11th so your probably right.

And a piece of my heart just broke off
This truly is depressing. This is not some primetime drama. These are the people that are on your screen Monday-Friday, Christmas, Thanksgiving. You laugh with these characters, cry with these characters, feel like you're a part of one of these fantastic families, and dream of visiting Springfield, and now, the characters, the town, the everything that you love is going, and it is just, ugh :/ No longer can dream of Springfield, takl about what's happening, dream of what we want to happen, get into the lives of these people like fans have for close to a FREAKING CENTURY. It's all gone, at the drop of a hat, or as we all like to say, the 'vision' of a batshit crazy woman. But GL, thanks for all of what you've brought viewers in your 72 years of broadcasting. The warm moments, the bad moments, the happy moments, the terrible moments, the surprising moments. Thanks for a lifetime of memories. A piece of me will die the day the lighthouse goes out. And I wish that day never had to come

August 14th was the date given to the cast as the last possible date they could be called in to work because the 14th is the date that all of their contracts will be officially canceled.

It's a sad sad day. It's hard to even think about because you think of all the ways this could have been saved, all the people to blame and then I think, I was a viewer, I was in the demo, and I watched so I can't kick myself. I've said this so many times, but those Neilson's are a joke and half.
I wish the whole cast best of luck, and the crew (with a few exceptions). So many changes, at the VERY VERY top should have been made, instead we were forced to see it all on our screen, which was a downfall. Deep inside of me, I think that Irna wouldn't want this show in the state (and leadership) that it was in. I have a lot of feelings about this, and as a lifelong viewer I hope to write them out. In Sept on the last day I think I am going to have to write it all out to help grieve.

DaytimeFan0001, I must correct you (lol). You said that you think Irna wouldn't want this show in the state it's in correction. If she was still alive, Ellen Wheeler's head would be the centerpiece on that woman's mantle- period. And if she was still alive, she sure as hell would not have let it get in this shape. She would have bitchslapped Ellen Wheeler faster than she could say 'vision'.!

Tina Sloan is great, love her but she should step away from the twitter. She already, by mistake, told people the last episode would air sept. 21 when it will air sept. 18th so I wouldn't count on TS twitter as proof of anything.

Sad. I always thought GL would go on forever (well at least outlive me).
Thank you to the cast and crew (Except Ellen Wheeler and David Kreizman) for entertaining me and keeping me company these past 31 years.
As I moved throughout California, Guiding Light was as close as my local CBS Affiliate (Fresno, Sacramento, San Francisco, Los Angeles) and was always a comfort in times of change.

Wish I had some extra tissues to loan you all but I think between what I went thru in '99 as well as the 10 years since, I have gone thru about a bushel-buttload of tissues already--and counting.
I was thinking recently about our losses and the overall viewer decline. Of the long-running soaps, there have only been 3 lost since the mid-1980s (even though that decade looks kinda ugly as a list):
:(
1974 The Secret Storm
1980 Love of Life
1982 The Doctors
1984 Edge of Night
1986 Search for Tomorrow
1999 Another World
2009 the light that shined longer than the rest
It would be interesting to know just what Irna would have thought about 1 of her creations lasting for this long (not necessarily her opinion of the condition of the show since she's had anything to do with it)...

I live about 90 minutes from Peapack..never been there, and I fully intended to get there before they wrapped (not that I'd probably be lucky enough to actually see anything). I came THIS close to taking the drive today, but then decided to make it Monday instead, thinking they would still be filming. FUCK! I may still go, just for shits and giggles...Of course, it just might make me feel worse
I simply can't wait for the day CBS ceases to exist. I will dance on their grave. A MILLION FUCK YOUS CBS!

The real pity is that at least one offer was made to P&G/Telenext to acquire the GL franchise through outright purchase or licensing, and was rejected. Instead, the characters become memories, the actors and crew search for new work, and the story ends for good.

Are you referring to Lifetime? I'm not surprised anyway that those idiots in charge of the soap at Telenext blew it. They're a bunch of fools who probably were pushing for an unappealing show full of nothing-ness, Marina & Mallet boring drama, Frank showing up everyday (the man has no star quality whatsoever so good luck with that), people doing nothing, when potential "buyers" probably wanted something good and edgy that could have worked but Telenext and Wheetler wanted things their way or they'd let the show die out for good. That's how I see it.
