DC #436: ABC Moves All My Children
On today’s ABC episode of Daytime Confidential Luke, Jamey and J Bernard discuss the latest in All My Children, One Life to Live and General Hospital news and storylines, including:
All My Children is picking up roots and moving to LA. In this episode, (recorded before ABC confirmed Jamey’s report on Tuesday) Jamey predicted that the announcement would happen this week and discusses in depth what he is hearing from his sources. He discusses the impact this shakeup will have on AMC’s veteran actors, where this leaves One Life to Live as ABC’s only New York soap and why General Hospital gets a pass because of it being the “Luke and Laura soap.” Is ABC’s solution only a band-aid until they can develop a talk show?
J Bernard shares his theory about the "Who Killed Adam?" storyline and why he believes everything isn’t as it seems.
General Hospital re-signed popular actors Steve Burton and Leslie Charleson, keeping them on canvas. Is Drew Garrett the next Tom Pelphrey or Steve Burton? Could he surpass them? GH needs to cast Michael a love interest ASAP and do whatever it takes to avoid a pairing him with his sister Kristina. Luke sees chemistry between Lulu and Dante, but J Bernard doesn’t. What does it say about GH that it takes two of Luke’s sons to beat up the son of Sonny Corinthos? Is Alexis covering up Kristina’s involvement in Claudia’s car crash out of character or is it right in line with the Alexis we know and love? Martha Byrne is a great actress, but Jamey believes she needs to be back on As the World Turns and not playing a one note Port Charles villain.
One Life to Live is gearing up for a double wedding as Matthew blackmails Bo and Nora. Matthew seems to be channeling his grandfather Asa. Should OLTL turn Matthew into this generation’s Asa? The Tea, Todd and Blaire triangle has Luke and Jamey on opposing sides. Luke wants Tea with Todd while Jamey wants him with his Blair. If Crystal Hunt could act and didn’t appear bored in the role, Stacy Morasco could be a “hellified” role. Jamey believes OLTL should set up a "Who Killed Stacy Morasco?" murder mystery since there are already more than enough possible suspects. It could be a blockbuster story.
All this and much more in this thought-provoking, All-Boys episode of Daytime Confidential.

Maybe it's just me, but I think Crystal may be stepping it up. I think they let her have a miscarriage too quick. I still wonder how Marcy Rylan would do in the role.

Hopefully no ABC shows get cancelled next year. OLTL really doesn't deserve to be the first to go. Hopefully they can raise the ratings enough to keep them going. You mentioned how OLTL isn't as bankable or recognizable outside the soap industry. You think if the Kish story continues to be a success and garner attention like it has, ABC could change their mind? I hope so because I'm loving OLTL right now. So much more good than there is bad.

Thanks for the podcast.
I wish that there were a female presence during the discussion of rape and sexism on soaps.

A discussion on rape and sexism on soaps?? Oh I have definitely got to listen to this one!!

We would have loved to have had a female on too Joss, but we have to do it with who shows up at that time and we didn't really plan a discussion on sexism and rape, it just came up.

Jamey,
I understand. I just read Marlena Delacroix's latest blog that deals with OLTL's alleged sexism.

I think it would be interesting to have a podcast about women and soaps --from the way the female characters are written v. male character, the difference in treatment between actors and actresses in salary, story, demands met or not met, etc.
I enjoyed your podcast.
As a female, I find OLTL often, while very entertaining, lacks the understanding of the heart and soul of a woman. Tea is written as a fool- especially in light of the fact that she just, a couple days before, caught Todd having sex with Blair. Now she is giddy over the prospect of his love and presumably, his bed. That is ridiculous. The idea that Blair would still want this man after everything he has done to her and her children borders on stupidity. Now, Marty is suppose to want him, as well. He ain't all that --and he is a rapist. What can be said for the idiot Morasco sisters? All this for Rex? Not buying it. John McBain as any woman's hero? Hell no.
Now RC wants me to buy that the great Dorian Lord is getting smashed over Ray Montez (I recognize the actors were amazing together-but we did not get to see enough of the romance nor was it a relationship nurtured through years of love and heartbreak). Not buying this either.
Tea, Blair, and most especially, Dorian, are staunch women who deserve to be written with more intelligence.

ITA!!! I would really love to hear a show dedicated to that subject! (though I know you guys already have A LOT on your plate.)
I'll withhold my comments about the subject until I've listened to the show...

I blame Frons for the sexism on the ABC daytime and Anne Sweeney needs to do something about it. She is responsible for the mess just as much as Frons is for not doing anything.
Also about the AMC move to LA, if you still have the bad writing and actors the show is still going to be horrible and gonna be on the chopping block so the move isn't going to stop things unless there are new people in charge of AMC. Pratt isn't going to save it and Frons is an idiot that needs to be fired. But I am hoping for the best, but things isn't getting any better for this industry.

Jamey, is absolutely right: it was just us and it just came up. One of the things that sometimes gets lost in this new version of the Blair/Todd/Tea triangle is that these two women are fighting over a rapist. I wasn't trying to make light of it in my comments (though trying to point out how the humor in the story helps it along), and I wish I could have been a bit more articulate on the subject.
I think we all tried to be as respectful of the subject as possible within the context of the soaps we were discussing.

I can't wait to listen to this on my trip to NY. I do have a question for you guys yall think Crystal Hunt is still "Dead Behind the Eyes". I think this psycho route (Passions lite indeed), has brought something out in her that I find enjoyable to watch, but I am probably in the minority one that one which is cool lol.

Great podcast as always, I think it is great to see three guys talking about soaps. J, I like your theory on the Stuart-Adam mystery. I think that Jamey is right on, if ABC wants to keep all of their soaps they need to fire Frons plain and simple. Loved Matthew, I think they should make him as Asa-light. On GH I have some principle heroes for you, Robert and Anna.

Todd and Tea are great together and she don't put up with his bs like Blair does. Love Matthew and Destiny. Hope OLTL is around forever and Frons get the boot.

simonstuart,
she walked in on him while he was having sex with Blair, she is also a lawyer who knows that since Marty could not consent to sex, Todd raped her twice, what is the bs she wont put up with, leaving the toilet seat up?

Jamey & Others,
Wasn't Blair the one who fought for custody of her children against Todd, who beat a teenaged boy and sent his own 16 year old daughter falling down a flight of stairs?
Yep! Todd and Blair belong together like vampires and holy water.
Why would a smart, tough, wealthy woman take back her abusive husband? Especially one that has not only hurt her but her children?!!! They guy sold his own son.

Yes, and Luke raped Laura, and Victor told Nikki he wanted her dead, and Jack left Jennifer after he found out their daughter Abby had Aplastic Anemia, and Jack treats Carly with contempt, as does Josh to Reva, and Ridge has ping ponged back between Brooke and Taylor for years, and Sonny called Brenda, Carly and every other woman in his life whores, and Lucas let his mother try to kill Sami twice, yet millions of soap fans still want those couples together. They're soap operas. I learned my morality from my Mama, not TV. I suspend my disbelief when the couple strikes a cord. All soap fans do. Carl Hutchins terrorized Rachel Cory's family for decades on Another World, only to become her last great love, and fans adored them.

That is good and well Jamey, but at its core soaps were a way to reflect real life and for the audience to get something out of it. Today that is not the case.

Some do. OLTL does. I think the Todd and Blair saga is very similar to classic, soap couples of the the past who were all wrong for each other, but fans still adored them. Fans rooted for Bil and Laura Horton in the 1960s and 70s, even though he raped her when she was married to his brother.
It wasn't just men who were victimized by women who still had followings either. Vicky Hudson cheated on the love of her life Ryan, with his brother, conceiving a child, and that only increased their rooting factor.
Alan Quartermaine tried to kill Monica twice, yet they are one of GH's greatest love affairs. And even classic soaps were not always reflective of real life. There was nothing real about Robin meeting a space alien or Luke and Laura preventing people from freezing planet Earth. Nor was it real that Viki Buchanan bore a baby under the ground and forgot about her.
I am as cyncial as it gets about the state of the modern soap, but when a soap is trying hard to get it right, and OLTL is, I cut them slack.

I see your pt. and that is in Blair & Todd's history. They have that sick back and forth thing. I would've been more accepting of them getting back together (I would've said it's Todd & Blair Part 243: It's Serious, No It Is Really Serious), but the guys at welovesoaps said my thoughts better than I could write them down. If Blair never had went through what she did last yr. w/Starr and the whole Marty & Todd thing, which unpop. opinion coming in again she started that whole thing when she denied him access to his son w/crazy Margret, I could've bought this, b/c she evolve so much as a mother whose love for her family transcended her toxic relationship w/Todd. But I guess now we have a tringle and I want to see T&T instead (and they are no better, but that how it goes).

I was pretty much done with the whole Todd and Blair thing when she chose to believe Spencer and his machinations over Todd (I mean the man was executed!) I liked his relationship with Evangeline much better. Since I can't have her I will take Tea. I have always loved her character. Plus we all know she has a juicy secret (child maybe?) out there!
