RUMOR REPORT: Is Production of All My Children MOVING to Los Angeles?

Several sources have come forward, revealing to Daytime Confidential that ABC Daytime is strongly considering moving production of All My Children to Los Angeles!
"This has been talked about for quite some time," says one source. "It would be so much cheaper to produce the show in L.A., because they can build permanent sets. That's one of the reason's it is so expensive to do shows in New York, because you have to pay the Union workers to come in and break downs sets every day."
The big question is, would New York-based ABC veterans like Susan Lucci or Michael E. Knight move to L.A.?
"The network is getting to to the point where they have to do something to keep the shows profitable, so if they lose a few stars with the move, that's a risk they are willing to take," says a second mole. "A few years back there was talk of moving One Life to Live to Florida, but the network backed off because much of the veteran cast refused to move."
Reportedly this move would prevent ABC from having to cancel one of its three soap operas for the time being.
"That Aisha Tyler Show was definitely planned for the ABC Daytime lineup," says a source. "People at all three soaps were definitely worried, no matter what was said in the trades."
The mole is referring to the Hollywood Reporter article claiming a planned talk show vehicle for Aisha Tyler was rumored to be slated for ABC's daytime lineup, a claim ABC denied.
According to an additional source, despite recent ratings woes, ABC's flagship soap General Hospital is the safest soap on the network's lineup, because GH is the most proven brand.
"GH may be the lowest rated ABC soap right now, but historically it's the lineup's most popular soap, it will be the last one to be cancelled," says an insider. "All My Children is considered the legacy soap, even though One Life to Live is older and was the first soap Agnes [Nixon] created for ABC, because AMC has iconic characters played by people recognized outside of the soap world. One Life's problem is it never created those types of superstar characters. Moving AMC to LA will actually buy both soaps time."
Those in the know say an announcement from Brian Frons about AMC's potential move could come at any time.

Intrinsically, I get the idea of making the show cheaper to produce, but quite honestly when I saw this, the first thing to go through my mind was "Different coast, same suck." They wouldn't need the cost-saving measures if they'd work harder to bring their audience back by giving them what they want, rather than what ABCD thinks they want.

Jillian, girl, do you think that Sony isn't playing around with Eric and just saying that if he doesn't take the pay cut then he can go? I think that even, Y&R, the number one soap, has a little over five years until the big C happening. Jillian, what's your take on the situation?

Wouldn't doing this open everyone's contract for renogiation? If so This could backfire bigtime. The article says they will take the risk at losing some stars but what if CM, TK, AM, CS, MEK, SL all decide not to move with the show. Just because some of these actors want to live in LA doesnt mean they will want to stay on AMC

Beth, I couldn't agree w/you more. (I stated that no matter WHERE they filmed this junk, it would still be JUNK. I hate to offend AMC fans, but....)
Ever since the ZARF debacle (I still freeze in time when I recall that episode of him singing on Cane's show) I've wondered who the writers are on this show and if they really think they put out good stories??
(Hitting Head honcho's over the head with a frying pan) HEY, ABC! Santa Barbara, Passians and Sunset Beach were all LA based shows...look at their fate. Write better drama and rating may go up....!!
Highly doubtful, however....
-I realize this is about cost, not ratings. Just saying...

Hey now Jillian! Peapack is not that bad now that they figured everything out. It took 'em forever and a day, but that, ALONG with Ellen Wheeler's 'Realistic Vision" Did GL in. So, you can't blame Peapack. I just can't stand the AMC look. The filming and everything just bothers me. Terribly. I was just thinking yesterday how much I have really come to love the Peapack filming, and new camera's, even though every scene is shot in a field. :/ Lol. The color and the definition is wonderful, really. So much better that the sets and lighting at places like Days and AMC. Especially Days. But yeah, if Fronz wants to save money, he should fire his executive staff, instead of trying to move a show across the country.
Ahh the things in Daytime that just make you wanna scream.

You can move production to Timbuktu and it won't matter if Craputhers is still EP and Pratt the Hack is still HW! Maybe they can afford more time, but I don't see ratings improving just because they move to LA. Now if they can bring back a few beloved actors who live in LA, like Eden Riegel, then I can see the move being beneficial.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I LOVE AMC's "Film Look" and wish the other ABC soaps would follow suit. OLTL would look absolutely gorgeous filmed in that style. That, combined with their high-quality outdoor location shoots would make OLTL the best-looking soap on television!

ThomHunt,
Have you seen the exterior shots OLTL has used lately? They're all done in HD that looks like it was shot on film.
Today's OLTL had scenes with Gigi, Rex, Schuyler, Stacy, Bo and Nora outside. All scenes looked great.

I'm not sure that OLTL's outdoor scenes were filmed in HD...they may have been, but it appears they used FilmLook for those scenes.
Whatever they did, it looked better than GL's ugly outdoor scenes. I've never seen anything more unattractive on tv than those GL outdoor scenes!!

OLTL has gone dark quite a few times over the last two years, in order to save costs. What about AMC and GH? I'm enjoying OLTL's outdoor scenes since they're random and make the storyline interesting.

Awh, GL has amazing outdoor scenes. The Natalia/ Olivia scenes after she ran out of her wedding, and it was snowing. Oh, phenominal! (: Jeffrey's memorial last week was great too. Maybe I'm prejudice though, because nothing is better than the Guiding Light. Sorry.

Moving the show to LA does nothing for AMC - look at what streamlining production and permanent sets did for GL - delayed the inevitable for 18 months. I actually think the red headed step child One Life to Live will be the last ABC soap standing. My cancellation prediction:
AMC: September 2011
GH: September 2012
OLTL: May 2013
In four years the only soaps left will be B&B and Y&R. I bet B&B is cancelled in September 2014 and Y&R is the only one left and will last for a while since it will be the only soap left.
