Canada's CTV Cancels One Life to Live
By Regan Cellura on June 02, 2009

Another one bites the dust, in Canada? According to reports, One Life to Live has been cancelled on CTV.
CTVglobemedia presented its upcoming Fall schedules today for CTV and ‘A’ networks. The flagship network picked up Dr. Oz and has placed it at 5pm. This will shift Dr. Phil to 3pm, sending General Hospital to the ‘A’. CTV will become a one-soap network with The Bold and the Beautiful continuing to air at 1:30pm.
One Life To Live has been cancelled by ‘A’ and reruns of ER will air in its place at 2pm. ‘A’ will keep All My Children at 1pm and then air GH at 3pm.
Times are all from the Toronto market. Other markets will be announced at a later date. OLTL fans can still catch the show on ABC.

Well the report says you'll still be able to watch it on ABC... do you get ABC?

This isn't really a big deal. Most Canadians get all the major American networks unless you live in the boonies.

And now the dominoes are falling, First GL cancelled and now OLTL in Canada. What show is next?

I am afraid that this isn't the end of the more cancellation if I am hoping that it is not. But with Y&R license fees slash in half and it is the number one soap and their vets have to take a pay cut, you know the industry is definitely in trouble.

The only inconvenience this will be for me is that whenever there's a news bulletin or something else breaking in on ABC, "A" kept on airing OLTL. I'll still be able to catch up on the west coast feed three hours later, but that's only if I realize there's been a cut-in within that time period.
I think it's very telling that e.r. reruns are more lucrative to air than OLTL. Bad news.
Oh, one more thing...since Canadian stations aren't allowed to air as many commercials as the U.S. stations in daytime, we've had those terrific little "Soaps Up" segments, hosted by Amanda Wilson and Lisa Perry. Now, we won't get to see their fun reactions to the goings-on in Llanview. I guess they'll be following Port Charles now, but I'll miss them in Lameview.
Well, this is pretty tame, all things considered...the changes that are coming will be much worse...

Its not THAT big of a deal. Yes it sucks. But almost every where in Canada should get ABC I know I do , and I live in a smaller town, so it will suck but at least we can still watch OLTL

How are Canadian soap ratings calculated? Is CTV a broadcast network like ABC or is it a cable channel? Are Canadian soap ratings based on the combined airing on CTV and ABC, just CTV or just ABC?

Luke, CTV and "A" are networks like ABC. We have a weird protectionist system here in TV, though. When a show is airing at the same time on a Canadian network AND an American network, the signal for the Canadian channel is substituted over the American channel.
So, let's say CTV is on channel 7 and ABC is on channel 20 (the way it is where I live). When GH is on, we get the CTV airing of the show, whether we're watching channel 7 or channel 20. We can't see any of the ABC commercials or promos...it's all Canadian. It sucks, really, because there are many times when we'd like to see the American promos or, say, in the summertime, when soap stars do "remotes" from spring break, etc., we don't get to see any of that here.
One exception is they can force this "simultaneous substitution" ONLY in the market in which we live, so when we watch the west coast feeds, we can see the American signal (for instance, in eastern Canada, we get the Seattle affiliates from the west, so we see all of the Seattle ads and promos, if we watch GH at 5pm, when it airs in the eastern time zone).
I know it's confusing (many Canadians don't understand it), but that's the deal.
So, as far as ratings go, people watching GH on channels 7 and 20 are both being counted, but they are ALL watching CTV, whether they want to or not.

THe big news is that CTV dumped GH and threw it to A. So let's hope Soaps Up survives (poor Amanda Wilson will now have to watch GH). This is big news because even GL wasn't canceled in Canada! Sign of things to come Tune in.
We'll still get One Life on the ABC feeds.... so no worries, but it says a lot that this show in under performing even GL on E! Canada. Now CTV only has B&B on a major network.
BTW — LUKE: A CHANNEL is like UPN. CTV is ABC-centric.

I LOVE the Soaps Up segments! On many days, it's the best part of the entire hour!

It is unfortunate OLTL was cancelled by CTV on the A channnel stations.Yes you still can watch it on ABC and many Canadians are able to get ABC provided they have cable, satellite or are close to the boarder to get the signal by the antenna. CTV probably had to cancel this show becuase they have over extended themselves by purchasing and acquiring the rights to air the Winter Olympics advertisement revenue in this economy is hurting them in carrying the Olympics. This has cost the local CTV and A stations dearly with budget and being able to purchase and maintain programs.

Is this mean that more bad news is on the horizon?

This is *so* stupid! Thank god I can still get the show on ABC but like others have said we could wind up missing stuff if they break in on ABC for news. And let me get this straight they kwpt GH and *AMC?* Clearly the network exces aren't watching these shows!

It's bad news for One Life.

basilnsybil (love the name, BTW), the Olympics have nothing to do with this decision. First of all, the Olympics will rake in huge profits for CTV. Secondly, the reason is simply because CTV has picked up Dr. Oz and something had to go. The dominoes toppled at OLTL's feet. It's that simple.

There are still two networks that OLTL can wind up on.
1. Global(or, more likely, its mini-network E!(not related to the US network of the same name))-and we know Global's soap-friendly. Imagine if ATWT was booted to E! and OLTL was promoted to Global....
Even so, I think E! would pick it up. This wouldn't be too bad; CHCH in Hamilton is the flagship and-if memory serves-has sorta superstation status in Canada.
2. CityTV, which has 5 stations in its network.
