Hollywood Reporter: Will Aisha Tyler's New Talk Show Replace an ABC Soap Opera?!

In an article about a new proposed talk show being developed for lackluster comedienne Aisha Tyler, The Hollywood Reporter discusses speculation the project might be headed for ABC's afternoon lineup, which currently airs All My Children, One Life to Live and General Hospital. According to article, ABC insists the talker is being developed for cable or syndication, however the very fact that THR even put the idea of The Mouse House replacing a soap with a talk show out in the universe has me worried.

There has been speculation that the project might be eyed for ABC's afternoon block, which airs the soaps "All My Children," "One Life to Live" and "General Hospital." (CBS recently canceled its long-running soap "Guiding Light" and will replace it with a game or talk show).

But ABC sources stressed that "Tyler" is being targeted strictly for syndication or cable."

Again, ABC is saying the show is slated for cable or syndication, but Daytime Confidential wouldn't be doing our job if we didn't tell you what an industry bible like The Hollywood Reporter is speculating. With several ABC soaps hitting record lows in recent weeks, with numbers dipping near that of the recently-cancelled Guiding Light—which the article cites as a benchmark—now may be the time to let ABC know just how much your favorite soaps mean to you.

Please oh please do not let this follow the TV Week/Guiding Light series of events pattern.

Would that really surprise anyone?

I do mean to disparage this genre, but do we really need another talk show. I read Oprah is developing a talk show for Jenny McCarthy and Dr. Oz's show comes online this fall - another Oprah production. What else new is there to talk about that hasn't already been talked about? The only thing new would be the talk show host/hostess. We have Oprah and Martha Stewart - that's all we need.

Oh disparage away! Talk Shows are dying too! I have read report after report in the same trades that are reporting the death of soaps saying so. Rachael Ray's show is barely staying afloat. Tyra's ratings were so bad she had to leave syndie to go the network. What is the logic in developing new talk shows?

I want to bury my head in the sand and not think about this, but I can't help it.

No way would GH get cancelled, not with them sinking a fortune into HD. That leaves AMC and OLTL. The rumors of those two merging have been around for years. I do not even want to imagine a world where AMC and OLTL are merged and Pratt is in charge of writing.  Next thing we know we'll have Heather The Hustler Locklear as Viki Lord Davidson on a show with Jamie No Ass Kisser Luner as Liza. I just do not want to think about this!

Frons is horrible, guza is horrible, Pratt is horrible and now OLTL is horrible.

GL is a perfect example of what a show can do when the network backs the heck away. Clearly they let the show do as it wished frome Dec on and they have continued to put out great show, even with horrible sets and weird filming.

There are only two shows the networks don't mess with Y&R and B&B, because they are still the highest rated and the Bell's run them.
Daytime belongs on cable, a place that they can actually write and be creative.

What can you say about ABC..I just watch GH and I can see how they don't care about fans, they actually have no clue why they are in the industry. It's about giving the viewers something they want to see, not what the want. The mess of the Jason/Sam/Lucky/Liz quad is the perfect example. First they destroy characters to seperate these pairings and even Ric & Alexis as well. Then we start to like the new pairings LuSam & Liason and BAM, with no warning they destroy the new Quad to attempt a return to the old one. You cannot jerk fans around like that, get us to adjust and invest and then pull the rug out.

The only good think about this possible ABC show being removed from the lineup is this. If GL gets a new home, maybe this information will give GT pause and she will decided to stay with GL, at least she knows they will write for her there.

Thank you Jamey. Tyra, I believe I read, might be moving to the CW Network.

I wonder if ABC would be so bold as to move one of their soaps to SoapNet fulltime? I don't know if this makes economic sense at all considering the production costs but, unlike CBS, they clearly have a cable outlet ready for a soap.

Finally Devil Frons' master plan comes to the fore: make us hate our shows so much that we won't care when one or all are cancelled.

I am guessing this is a decision being thought about by Disney and not ABC. I always believed that the day might come when Disney just decides to do away with soaps all together.

OLTL would be my first choice if an ABC soap is being replaced. AMC might be since Susan Lucci takes a huge pay chunk from ABC.

I am concerned about longtime rumors that AMC would be the first ABC soap to go.

Why are they even bothering. If they won't fire the head of ABC daytime Frons, if they won't fire the horrible writing staffs, if they allow certain actors to control storyline....Then why are they even in the business. The should just show their cards and allow these show a timeline to make up for years of horrible storylines and zero respect for history.

Just say... in 2011 we won't be in the business of soaps anymore, some might goto soapnet but the rest are saying goodbye. For the next two years hire a good head writer and give us something to watch.
It to painful to watch them kill soaps like this and not own upto it.

I've been saying for the longest time in post after post, that for ABC to allow their soap ratings to sink this low without intervention, is the blinking beacon on the light house!! I really believe that in order to change the face of daytime, TPTB have to disenchant it's viewers from it's current daytime format. I still stand by the belief that ABC has put more effort into allowing it's suds to sputter than they have trying to evolve them for the future on the network TV.

Soapnet is there for a reason folks and I wouldn't be surprised if one day down the road, ABC soaps are relegated to their own cable network where they can do the things that network TV doesn't allow... but that's being optimistic on my part!!

Do people even still watch Talk Shows, besides Oprah, anymore? They just seem so 5 years ago to me.

Isn't OLTL the more profitable soap? I could see them merging both OLTL and AMC if they decided to go this route I guess that would be better than just canceling one outright. I always told people once GL goes the domino effect will start.

Wow. I guess we better take these rumours seriously and get psychologically ready for what was once it thought unthinkable. It's out there in the universe. GL was reported months ahead and bada-bing April 1 -gone.

Unless your name is Ellen or Oprah, your talk show is pretty much dead! And is Aisha Tyler going to save talk shows? No! If Rachel Ray and Tyra are doing bad in the ratings, what would AT do? I like her as an actress, but I wouldn't watch her over any of the ABC soaps, even AMC (yes, I know!).

Yeah, but if the writing for the aBC wasn't so bad, I think the soaps wouldn't be endangered of being canceled. but with the hacks writing the show into the ground and destroying any sense of history, I do agree that the end of cancellation isn't over and I hope that GL goes to another network and succeeds because it could be the revival of the genre and won't be the end of it and good writing can come out on top again and compete with primetime and film.

I honestly wish I could say I was surprised, but with abcd turning into Frons-Central the soaps do seem doomed. Where is Anne Sweeney in all this? Why abcd isn't cleaning house starting at the top is beyond me--unless they really want the soaps to fail.

Bob Guza & Charles Pratt should definitely be tossed out as well. Ron Carvaletti(sp?)was doing a great job until Frons got his greedy hands into the cookie jar.

Putting in another talk show??? Ridiculous!
I would miss the soaps terribly....but then again, I already do, they are unbearable to watch right now.

I think -- in this case -- we're worrying about nothing. Aisha's show is being tailored to the youth market, and as soap producers seem so unable to grasp, most young people aren't around in the daytime to watch TV. I can see it being sold in the 7pm eastern time slots, where teens and young adults will watch it before Gossip Girl, etc.

Incidentally, I love talk shows as much as my soaps. I tune in everyday for Regis & Kelly, Ellen, The View, Bonnie Hunt and Oprah. In late night (in addition to Stewart and Colbert), I watch Letterman, Craig Ferguson, Jimmy Kimmel and will give Conan a shot as soon as he replaces that idiot who's been filling in for Johnny Carson.

TV Gord, LOL, I want the soaps to be revival, but the way they are writing it, I don;t think it will be around for another five years. But GL is a soap that could be saved if Bloom didn't interfer and ruin it and now needs another network to air it. But if another network is interesting in it, this can be the revival of the drama of soaps that since network doesn't want to air them anymore.Sad

Aisha Tyler, seriouslly? She's not funny and she's a bad actress, I don't want to see her as a talk show host. I'm not worried yet, but I do think that eventually the ABC soaps will move to soapnet.

Say what? Did you ever watch her stint as host of Talk Soup? She was absolutely hilarious. I love Aisha Tyler and I hope that this works out for her...

That said, I'd be surprised if she ends up in the daytime line-up. I read an article not too long ago that said that Rachael Ray's show was on the chopping block at ABC due to low ratings and costs overruns, so maybe they're bringing in Aisha to replace her. Ray's been struggling, particularly, in the key advertising demographic, which Aisha seems more likely to pick up, given the suggested format. With the semi-emphasis on political satire, it sounds to me like Aisha's show would do great as a lead-in to "The View."

pecola, I'm with you. I think Aisha is very funny (I also enjoyed her on Ghost Whisperer).

As for Rachael Ray, I believe her show is produced by Oprah, so I think a bigger threat to her right now is Jenny McCarthy. Although they haven't said Jenny's necessarily going to do a talk show for Harpo, it does seems as though she's waiting in the wings for Rachael 30-minute meal of fame to run out.

You may be right that Aisha could be a good lead-in to The View (although if they're appealing to a younger demo, is that really the best time for her?), and the 10am (eastern) hour belongs to ABC affiliates, so that would mean individual stations would decide whether they want it there. More importantly, she wouldn't be taking an hour from one of the ABC soaps.

People just don't watch TV the way they used to.
We don't just have 10 options and 3 major networks anymore. There are 100's of channels to choose from and all cater to different things, there is something for everyone. I don't get the desire to capture all these demos anymore, those young people are interested in different things and they are part of the text, internet & cable era. Soap need to find a venue for the millions of people who want to watch them and will follow them to other networks. Listen..Listen..Listen to what your viewers are telling you, people want the shows to care about the storylines and characters, they want soaps to go back to traditional soap storylines and move them into the modern times. Stop with the plot points, the big blowups and give us love, romance, angst, family, adventure, angst, illness, affairs and murder mystery.
Write a gay storyline for it's love affair not for the shock factor that the character is gay (my good). See Otalia for that, it's about the love and how it unfolds into the people in thier lives, life as well.

I really see GL being canned on April 1 and the honest effort to get this show on another network (perhaps cable) as a path, a path for the future of daytime.
GL is as well written as any soap on the air today, it's changing and moving forward with production and storylines. It's sad because if the show had the sets that GH had it would be 2nd to none.

People who watch soaps spend money.

Anyone wanna bet it's All My Children?
AMC has been *my* soap since I was 3 years old and watching it with my mother, but the way Pratt's been writing it lately it seems doomed for cancelation. I'd been hoping the show might be saved by someone similar to Ron C. but I doubt it now?
Notice how deep in denial I am about a certian 2pm soap being canceled?

pecola, I did watch her on the soup, didn't think she was funny then either. I liked the soup when Greg Kinnear, John Henson hosted, when she came on, I quite watching. i sometimes catch the new version that's on now. The only thing I ever thought she was decent in was that eppy she did of NipTuck, but her storyline was better than she was.

To each there own.
