BREAKING NEWS: Did Y&R's Chris Engen QUIT Over Gay Kiss?
By Jamey Giddens on May 21, 2009

TV Guide Canada's Nelson Branco is reporting Chris Engen (Adam) allegedly walked off the set of The Young and the Restless after refusing to kiss Yani Gellman (Rafe)!

TV Guide Canada's Nelson Branco is reporting Chris Engen (Adam) allegedly walked off the set of The Young and the Restless after refusing to kiss Yani Gellman (Rafe)!
According to sources, Engen bolted because he [allegedly] refused to kiss [his same-sex] co-star Yani Gellman [Rafe]. Chris hasn't been happy for a while. He doesn't like the dark direction his character is taking. He's called in sick a lot recently and has been taking a slew of meetings with Y&R's [top brass] to discuss his future on the show.

Homophobia is a classic disguise for closet homosexuality.

He should demand at least changing the direction of the story or speeding it up. He doesn't deserve to be having to deal with this stupid crazy Ashley story. His lines are so typical.
As for the gay kiss. I guess not everyone wants to kiss someone of the same sex. Even when they are sexy latinos.
Btw, You can still be open to gays without having to kiss another guy to prove it.
It sure would of been hot to see them kiss though.

leaving the Actors out of it, becuase I don't 'know them' like I do the characters they portray, but I wouldn't buy Adam w/Rafe for the simple fact that we've seen over and over and over again, Adam sleeping with and ENGAGED to Heather! Y&R would be pulling a stunt from the pages of the Crappy AMC (Reese, anyone?)
I already buy Rafe having a thing for Adam, but Adam is straight, not Gay ("not that there's anything wrong w/that")
Billy Miller however seems open to anything!! He probably walked on set, said "Ah, I'll do it!" and DONE. Scene finished. HAHA! He's awesome.....

I love Chris Engen and think he is one of the best things that has happened in daytime in the last couple of years.
I really don't know if I believe this rumor however I do agree that turning Adam gay would be totally stupid.
I still love him and whether he stays with Y&R or goes somewhere I wish him all the best in the world.

Chris Engen is an ACTOR and under CONTRACT to ACT for "The Young and The Restless." It's a STORY, Chris--you're just ACTING. If they asked him to portray a serial killer, would he object to that fearing people might think he's like that in real life? He's not acting in a XXX movie here--it's daytime television! Something seems a little ridiculous here. If he objects to the "darkness" the role is taking, he should've waited out his contract and chosen to leave at the end of it. In this economy, he just comes across as a diva. Imagine if a gay actor balked at kissing his female co-star?! Most people would brand that ridiculous, citing that the person was hired to ACT in a ROLE! (Ask Thom Bierdz!)
I think Engen is making a mistake; this isn't the kind of buzz you want surrounding your career when something bigger than daytime TV could've been in his future.

I think we must be certain not to swing prejudice the other way.
Everyone must be free to make what ever their choice is, even the one not wanting to kiss same sex partner.
Freedom must be available to everyone and no matter what. JMO!
It is HIS life, his choice and the consequences going with it!

He freely signed a contract. He allegedly freely walked off the set in the middle of said contracts. So the Bells and Sony are now to free to sue the pants off of him.

I was actually just starting to like CE as Adam Newman. If he is doing this foolishness on set then he needs to go IMMEDIATELY! Come on it's 2009 not 1909 grow up and get over it CE! You should be a shamed of yourself if you are acting out. You are an actor well at least attempting to be one. I tell you I don't know what is going on at Y&R but the behind the scenes mess is turning into a soap. First Jess Walton briefly walking out, Melody Thomas Scott possibly being asked to take a pay cut and refusing, now CE quitting over a kiss. Come on MAB this behind the scenes mess needs to be nipped in the bud quickly!

Just because a man sleep with a woman doesn't mean he isn't sleeping with men. Ever heard of the DL?

A couple weeks ago I would have agreed with you, but now seeing that Adam is behind the gaslighting of Ashley I could see him taking advantage of Rafe and sleeping with him. I mean he would be a typical soap villan and it would make sense. Adam using Rafe to help him get off house arrest. I think Adam would be willing to do anything. It makes sense. He is out to get Victor Newman and Jack Abbott so he will do anything to help his vendetta. Plus it would create some great soapy drama with Adam using Rafe.

Things like this, I swear... And is it any wonder why Adam Lambert didn't win IDOL last night? It's because of fools who think and share the same beliefs as Chris Engen.
Getting ticked off over "the dark direction his character is taking" as a reason not to do his job? Give me a break. That so called explanation doesn't even pass the laugh test. Get a new PR person for Engen or Y&R to spin this BS.
I hope Engen gets sued for breach of contract. Like any other actor on a soap, he's there at Y&R merely as a hired gun to do what TPTB want him to do. He's not even a superstar or a "name" and he's already acting like this? Good riddance.

Commenting on the assumed storyline aspect of all of this, some people are saying things to the effect of, "Adam would never suddenly 'turn' gay--he's been with Heather, etc...."
First of all, as Jamey commented, some guys CAN BE on the DL and that could be a possibility here with this character. Personally, I like the idea in this storyline that Adam would simply be crafty enough to say to himself, "I need ____________, Rafe can get that for me, and the easiest way for that to happen is to come on to him sexually." It wouldn't mean Adam is gay, it wouldn't mean he has to wipe his mouth afterward, it would just mean that Adam is a manipulator willing to do what he has to get what he wants and (in this day and age) he doesn't care if that means making out with his male lawyer. Heck, on screen to date, he's been playing all the rest of the people close to him--even the girl he's been schtupping! I think it would make the character of Adam even more interesting to have him express his craftiness in this way. No one seems to care when manipulators on soaps (male or female) sleep with someone of the opposite sex simply to get what they want; why can't they sleep with (or at least simply kiss) someone of the same sex for the same reasons?

See, I knew that was coming. While, I'm sure for some who voted it was about homophobia. Let's not discredit Kris' win last night. Kris has been a consistent performer this season and was just as popular as Adam, although, the judges tried many times to discredit Kris and his performances. I love Adam but sometimes he could be a little over the top. Adam's best was when he was toned down (e.g. Mad World or Tracks of My Tears).

Even though its 2009 there is still homophobia around. I hope this is just a big blow up on CE's part because if he does truly walk Bell/Sony will sue. It will hurt his career. They will recast. There are actors willing to work and to be honest CE was good but someone else could be GREAT. I'd think about this rewally long and hard if I were CE.
I seriously doubt Adam is gay. Rafe probably tells him and Adam decides to come onto him to get what he wants. Ive known folks like this. Its not about their sexuality. Its a power game and Adam wants to have all the power.

OMIGOD!! What an IDIOT!!!!!!!!!!!
To respond to a couple of the comments, gay men sleep can with women all the time. They can even get married and have children before getting the courage to come out (like my dear friend). So, Adam could absolutely be struggling with all of his emotions or be using Rafe as suggested already.
To Chris Engen, please just leave! How can you throuw away a contract on this show???!!! You don't have to BE gay to PLAY a gay character for crying out loud!!! This is TOTALLY ABSURD!!!!! HE'S SUPPOSED TO BE AN ACTOR!!!!

I sure hope this isn't true, but if it is, shame on Chris Engen. I think Sean Penn said it best when he accepted his Academy Award for playing gay activist Harvey Milk in the movie "Milk": (IMOW) We as actors play human beings, not straight or gay. Chris, Sean Penn you are not. If the script calls for a gay kiss, then you as an actor need to put your homophobia aside and get the fucking job done. It's called being professional. Everybody and their brother or sister has had a gay kiss in Hollywood these days and, hell, their careers are better because of it. Just look at how Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger's (God rest him) careers took off after Brokeback Mountain. Both of them were nominated for academy awards for their performances as gay cowboys. They even did a full on sex scene that was considered graphic (I guess the Ang Lee never saw QaF, lol). Jake S. and Van H. kiss all the time over at ATWT and those boys are probably the most popular couple in daytime. I say sue his pansy ass if he can't get the job done. There are tons of out of work actors who would kiss a horse's behind if it meant getting a paid acting role in these dark days.

I don't care what Chris Engen's issues are he is an actor if the script demands that he has to kiss a guy he damn well should. Trevor St.John played a rapist who abducted, manipulated, lied to and raped his rape victim all over again, if he could play someone that despicable knowing it could result in awful backlash against him because we soapfans are crazy like that then Chris Engen should suck it up, kiss Yani Gellman and then gargle with bleach when he's done.
I'm sorry but if this story is true then bye bye to CE and lets get someone like Chad Brannon or someone else who can better embody the essence of Victor Newman's demon seed spawn if he can't hack it. It's a shame because CE has great chemistry with YG but if he's being disruptive, then he needs to go because the storyline is more important than he is, he is not Melody Thomas Scott or Jess Walton who fans might actually lose sleep over if they walked. MAB needs to recast his sorry ass and let him go to the soap wasteland with Brenda Dickson, actually scratch that at least BD brought it on screen.

I think there's more going on her than homophobia on Chris Engen's part. I think this is just the straw that broke the camel's back. Look at how Adam has been written since being brought on the show. He's ALL OVER THE MAP! Clearly TPTB don't have a clue how to write him.
I think it's more FRUSTRATION than homophobia.

Good Riddance to bad rubbish. I have always perceived Adam as dark since he was introduced. I don't know what CE is talking about but i hope TPTB recast his role quickly.

Season 1217,I am curious, why did you want them to get rid of CE all those months ago? Incidentally, I am in agreement. I liked the idea of Adam Newman just not the actor playing him. I tried and tried to adjust to CE, but I never could swallow him as Victor Newman's son. He does not have the gravitas needed for the role.

Its called acting when you get into a profession like acting you have to be prepared for roles such as this. But i'm curious as to the fact that Y&R was going to get a kiss and GL is still having Otalia hug!

They are slowly, but surely transforming this character into the best villain in daytime right now. Any actor who would allow their "frustration" over this amazing, classic, 1970's style, Hitchcocking storyline, whether it be gay issues or whatever is a blithering idiot. This character hasn't been all over the place. He's been the prodigal son, who is pissed off that his siblings grew up with silver spoons, and with every episode he is allowing that to make him more embittered. No matter what his issues is, he signed a contract. If he walked out on that contract, he should be sued. Does he think he will be able to dictate story on any of the other soaps, or in primetime or film? Actors are sometimes their own worst enemies.

I still don't believe this rumor. Wasn't it just a couple of months ago that there were reports that him and Vail had been let go?
I'm not dissing DC who I love or NB however lately rumors seems to be leaked quite easily from the Y&R camp. Almost like some kind of blackmail against the actors.
Also not that it means anything but I checked out CEs myspace and he doesn't really come off as some homophobe redneck.
Maybe my love of CE is making my want to believe that this rumor isn't true, I would be very dissapointed.

If its frustration then CE should go talk to the entire cast of GH, THAT is frustration, dealing with Guza and Frons and watching your character degenerate into something completely and utterly unrecognisable when you are a talented Emmy winning/nominated actor. CE is a newbie playing a character that hasn't even begun to be properly defined yet so he has no reason to talk. If Erika Slezak could put up with Dena Higley's crap writing, if Susan Flannery and Katharine Kelly Lang can deal with Brad Bell's midlife crisis, if the cast of all ABC shows can deal with bad writing and Brian Frons peeing on the trees, if the cast of Y&R could deal with LML and her shennadigins then Chris Engen can deal with character going dark and hooking up a man.

Assume that Adam did not have to kiss Rafe but instead were to murder Ashley, commit rape or kidnap a character. Let's just think about this. In this scenario, would Chris Engen even think twice to bitch and moan instead of playing out the story as he is CONTRACTED TO DO SO? I think not.
I hope his employer sues him for every penny he's worth. Engen is a hired gun plain and simple. In an age were Jess Walton and Melody Thomas Scott could face unemployment, Engen has absolutely no right to act like a prima donna and walk away just because he doesn't like either "the dark direction his character is taking," which could also include in a homophobic person's mind the direction of feeling a same sex attraction, or the direction that he has to kiss Yanni Gellman.
If all Branco says is true, then Engen has really shot himself in the foot. Idiot.
