Days of Our Lives Within 97,000 Viewers of Y&R In Women 18-49

Insiders say that the only important ratings are women 18-49. With that in mind, here are the latest ratings for women 18-49. Days of Our Lives is within 97,000 viewers of claiming the No. 1 ranking from The Young and the Restless, among women 18-49. An NBC press release earlier this week revealed Days of Our Lives tied for No. 2 for the first quarter, in daypart's most coveted demographic. Considering the continued increases by Days of Our Lives, I can't help but wonder if the soap opera's chances for renewal improve by the week? Meanwhile the big mystery is, what deal did Dena Higley make with the devil?

Over at ABC, General Hospital rebounded from disappointing Monday numbers to tie with All My Children as the No.1 ABC soap, in households.

Why oh Why coudn't that Hack er, BB give GL more time. And I was thinking what if there was a Jeva reunion, and with GA back, would that have brought the ratings up to a 1.8 or higher??

CBS REALLY needs to pay attention to what is going on in its daytime division. Every week, the ratings show stagnant viewership with significant losses in viewers from the previous year. Several proactive changes need to be made NOW, so that reactive changes are not required in the future. And, very clearly, these changes need to start at the very top.

(Of course, these comments are made with the caveat that the rating system is incredibly flawed.)

They don't want to make changes because it serves to prove point- soaps aren't good anymore.

I really don't mind the focus resting on 18-49 demographic. As long as they understand people in this demographic happen to have a wide range of connections in demographics not 18-49. We still talk to grandma, so yes, we want to see her on television- the same could be said of any diversity in race and sexuality. It's okay to acknowledge that these demos matter, but failure to understand these demographics is unacceptable.

If DOOL were to get renewed- to what degree would we owe that to DH, having made a deal with the devil or not?

I don't know is it really fair to think that the older soap watchers just don't matter anymore. When your young the soap operas lure you in and then when you hit a certain age (like jobs) they put you out to pasture so to speak. I think the ratings system needs a BIG overhaul.

Days is one of the worst written soaps on television. Why are people 'flocking' to it? When you have character drives plots, and true story telling going on...(Guiding Light). And, what sense does it make for CBS to cancel GL when everyone is starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel EW and DK mis-guided us into?

Why, oh why?

I love John and Marlena, and Steve and Kayla, too. But the new Days is more compact and focused and has a don't-miss-a-day storyline with the Nicole-E.J.-Sammi-Rafe quadrangle, and a baby switch story that has months of great fodder ahead. The show is succeeding because the story is fun and involving. I do miss the heart and emotion of the show that Marlena and the Hortons represented and wish that were present as well, but I think the ratings are up because the fans that are left are watching every day instead of once or twice a week.

Salem thats an interesting perspective and it gets to the heart of what I keep wondering...if you are one of tiic what do you take from these numbers? What makes AMC go up when the writing is as bad or worse than its ever been. WHat makes GL go down when the writing is getting better. We always say that the problem with our shows is in the writing - and I still hold to that position - but from a business perspective it doesnt seem that the ratings, at least in the short term, are tied to the writing. And the general consensus is that YR remains number one because of its great use of the vets, yet DOOL fires 4 vets, big stars too boot, and the ratings go up.

If you are brian frons and you look at these numbers, what do you take from them, because if I were him I think I would be scratching my head right about now.

But DOOL is still vet heavy - actors like Sweeney, Datillo, Koslow have been around for around 15 years. Zuker, Bjorlin and JKJ have been there on and off for a decade. Plus we are actually seeing tons of Joe Mascolo, John Anniston and even Suzanne Rogers, Peggy McKay but not enough of Renee Jones & James Reynolds. Throw in perennial Bo & Hope (ok, their SL sucks...) and I can't fathom why people say the show is "unrecognizable" - clearly some people havent really been watching for the last decade, or simply FF their non-favourites (this seems to be evident with fans of the supercouples who only watched scenes that included their favourites). As for Molly Burnett, she was on for a maximum of 15 minutes over the last 2 weeks, so that could be the reason for the increase (said tongue in cheek... maybe Tongue) All that has changed is that all these actors have stepped up to the A stories and most have more than met the challenge.

As for the writing, the show is tight - its focussed, has good dialogue and pacing and the stories are intertwined creating a sense of community on the soap - something that has been missing for years. But above all, it engages the viewer who gives it a fair chance, rather than dismissing it based on preconceived prejudices. I don't know what deal Higley made with the devil, but clearly the deal included writing skills she hasn't exhibited before. It pains me to compliment her because she was possion back in 2003 and her OLTL stint was dire, but I can't deny what I see what is on screen is quality soap. Maybe Tomlin & Whitesell are reigning her in, I don't know, but for now its working. Hence the ratings and positivity from people ACTUALLY watching the show.

Thanks soapfan99 YOU ANSWER THE QUESTION REALLY WELL..."As for the writing, the show is tight - its focussed, has good dialogue and pacing and the stories are intertwined creating a sense of community on the soap - something that has been missing for years. But above all, it engages the viewer who gives it a fair chance..
ITA with your comments.
maybe other soap should take notice...its about BALANCED we love and respect the vets but younger audiences wants to see STRONG writing with real dialogue for the younger actors too in order to be truly engaged in the story.

Ok I have been watching Days for years and I have no idea why it is even close to number 1!! The storylines suck! Please give me a break! The couples I knew and loved don't seem to be there anymore. My favorite couple got broken up and that actress backburnered...and why she got backburnered, I have no idea because she is beautiful and unlike others that are near her age on the show, she can actually ACT!! And now she is leaving the show Sad And her love...I don't know what on earth they did to his character. Making him all weepy and just not the person we fell in love with when he first came to town. And then you have others trying to change characters and everyone falls in love at the drop of a hat.

omg...I have no idea whatsoever why Days is near number one!! I guess people obviously do not like good storylines anymore! Now last year with Chelsea and Bo and the whole pancreas story, family coming together, now THAT was Days! And the romance to come out of it, Daniel and Chelsea, now that is also a Days couple! But they have totally just...omg this is sooo not the Days I grew up with!

Where I live, a lot of people watch Days out of habit/loyalty. As long as Dena doesn't have Bo stab Hope as Grandma Horton burns Salem, they'll watch. After the GL cancellation, I'm just glad that some soap has good news. P.S.--I saw a rumor that Molly Burnett got a gig on "True Blood." If it's true, maybe they'll keep her! Smile

Maybe if they hadn't screwed up Cane & Lily, this wouldn't be happening. Giving them angst and making them star-crossed lovers was fine and dandy, but making them look stupid to post up another character is unforgivable. Y&R should look at Lane-heavy days last year and compare it to non-Lane days and connect the dots.

WE WANT MORE character development for Cane, MORE character development for Lily, MORE development as a couple for Lane. And this can be done effectively without taking away from anyone else. They just need a writer. Please bring the Lane writers back!
