EW.com Says Insider Confirms Guiding Light "Likely Cancelled" in September
By Jamey Giddens on March 30, 2009

EW.com is reporting that an insider has confirmed to them that Guiding Light will likely be cancelled in September. The piece references the earlier TV Week story. I really don't want to sound like an alarmist, but TV Week and EW.com are two of the most reputable entertaiment industry bibles around folks.

Come on now DC. I was defending you earlier. The EW article is exactly the same article you posted before. There is no new developments, they are using you as the source.

Troy, as flattering as it is, for you to think that Entertainment Weekly would use us as a source, that is not the case. EW says an insider confirmed the TV Week report to them. Look, it is what it is, this is news so we have to cover it. The show will likely be cancelled. All you can do is call the network and tell them how you feel, but there is really no need to keep asking us to not report on stuff. We're not Chicken Little, the sky truly is falling. Nelson said last year that the show would be cancelled in 09, and then Mel reported early in the year that CBS said they had to hit and maintain a 1.8, and they didn't. In fact last week, they dropped to 1.5! We are sick about this. The show is really on fire, but being on fire didn't save Dirty Sexy Money, My So Called Life or to take it to daytime, Santa Barbara. I think we all need to still fight for the show, but also face the facts.

WOW!! So suddenly everyone knows everything. And "insiders" are really coming out from everywhere!! Frankly this all makes me suspicious. And I agree with troymcclure, it is funny how EW's article is almost the same as what was posted here.

The odds are against us, but really I dont seem to care, I love being the underdog, yes things are looking bad, yea the sky is falling, all we have to do is look up in the sky, but you know what? I think we need to focus, we dont need to let it effect us just yet, the sky may be falling but guess what? We can buy duct tape, that stuff fixes everything! So come on, lets stop worrying about humpty dumpty, we know he has fallen but we are all the kings men and we are going to put him back together again!
Clear EYES (meaning we know the show's fate, we understand our chances are slim but we dont care), FULL HEARTS (SHOW YOUR LOVE FOR GL! AND THE WHOLE SOAP INDUSTRY!), CANT LOSE! (IF We give it 110% WE CAN DO THIS! We have to show that we care, we can so come on LETS GO!)

TV Week used "people familiar with the matter" as their source but admitted CBS and P&G would not comment. EW.com used the word "source". And now DC is quoting "sources" as well. Why can't anyone name names? In the end if everyone is wrong, they will just blame their anonymous "sources". Now isn't the time to pick GL's bone. Let's rally support. Where are all the posts about saving GL instead of casting the actors on other soaps?

AaronKr1972,
Well, I for one will be sending a physical letter to Barbara Bloom and her superior at CBS tomorrow. I already sent online feedback earlier today. Every little bit helps.

I know that DC is going to keep reporting stories and rumour but I'm going to keep my head firmly in the sand.
Maybe I'll call and write CBS telling them I've heard some crazy stories about GL being cancelled and just wanted to assure them I know they aren't that crazy.

Barbra Bloom let me let you know this, the second you take GL off the air I am done with CBS line up, and the same fate will happen to you that happen to NBC when they took Santa Barbra and Another World off the air. It id dieing a slow and painful death with Days of Our Lives.
I really will be done with Soaps all together. I do not fault DC for repoting, they are not saying they agree with it, they are reporting it, and what they have also heard.
No one is saying anything really but spaking alot. I personally would not cancel any show on CBS, but it is what it is and it hurts my heart but if it happens the Golden Egg that was Daytime is gone. It will only be a matter of time.

Journalists are ethically bound to protect their sources. It should be pretty telling though that CBS said "no comment". If it weren't any truth to TV Week's report, all they have to say was "Not true". Guys your wasting time shooting the messengers. We're not developing new shows as we type to replace GL, Barbara Bloom is.

NO! This can't be true! I thought they were going to give them another year now that GA is back?!?!? If they cancel GL I don't think i could stand to watch the other CBS soaps. As much as i love Y&R, GL was always my favorite. It is a sad, sad day.....

You know, we do our best to bring you what information we have. The networks are spin doctors and try to do their best to pass the buck.
Well the buck stops here. If you guys want to save your show, you need to start a co-ordinated fan effort to do so. And it can't be started by us. It needs to be started by fans and run by fans. We don't have the time to run something, but we will happily promote a legitimate and concerted effort.
Go and take some notes from the people who ran the Jericho campaign. While GL is not my show, I wish you better luck than the Jerichoholics had.
And please, we are only messengers, I only wish the news was better!!

so lets untangle how this relates to that blind item from last week!

If CBS does in fact cancel GL, should we expect other soaps to soon follow? If so, what would the criteria be for cancelling a soap opera? Is it strictly ratings?
Being in the advertising field, I can certainly attest to that if a soap became online only, solely web-based advertising wouldn't generate the needed revenue to cover a show's operating expenses which include salary.
Is it implausible for a daytime soap to migrate to primetime? The expense would be higher I imagine, but I wonder if a soap trimmed down to less than five days a week if it could have sustainability in a primetime slot.

Yeah guys if 20 more reports come out saying they have insider info that GL is being canned than DC should report it. THanks Tina. Man I hate for my show to go.

I have to ask a question of you then YRfan lol
Why when you actually can tell that I am watching, and i am being forced to watch your ad's does my eye ball all the sudden cost less?
I am actually watching your ad instead of skiping it (like most t.v. watchers do) and it just doesnt make sense to me that Online cost less.

Johnathon - Advertising is all about convincing a consumer that they "must have" an object (merchandise, service, etc) and that one version of it is better than another. Online advertising costs much less to the merchant than advertising by television, radio and print but statistically consumers purchase much less after seeing an online ad versus ads in other forms.

Tina is right. The fans got Jericho back on (even though it was again taken off soon after). Us GL fans need to start something. I know a lot of you (myself included) have been writing and recently calling but it is going to take more than that. We need an actual campaign. I am willing to help in any way I can (i offered to start a petition earlier). If anyone has any ideas on where to start give me a message and I will be happy to help!
Save Guiding Light!!

@Appleofmyi --
I totally agree, and let me know if a HQ pops up!
@YRfan09--
I do understand, and while normally i would love to debate I am super swamped atm (and this GL mess isn't helping LOL), but I love advertisment and I think the future IS online, I know that is how i consume almost all of my content and it just irks me to know that because advertisers ACTUALLY KNOW I am watching all the sudden it cost less then if they kinda guesstimate thanks to Neilsens lol
