Wow. How sad. He really is a soap legend. One of my earliest soap memories is watching him on OLTL as kid--as well as CR's Clint who recently passed.

What? How could this be? Phil Carey is ,as kerfuffles said, a soap legend. I always held on to the hope that the character of Asa Buchanan was really alive and well, kicking up his cowboy boots somewhere in Texas even though we saw him in heaven. I have enjoyed the many years in which Mr. Carey has filled my screen and entertained me. He will be gravely missed. My prayers go out to his family, friends, and legion of fans who are saddened by this shocking news.

I loved the character of Asa and Phil Carey played him perfectly. He will be so missed. If you all get a chance to watch the original Mr Roberts with Henry Fonda and James Cagney, you will see Phil Carey in the movie, it was one of my favorites and he played so good, even had a nice singing voice.
Two oldies but goodies lost on OLT I sure hope they pay a special tribute to both.

So sad to lose someone still so larger than life, even at 83 years of age. I'm just happy that his ties to OLTL were strengthened towards the end, so he could still be a part of our Llanview lives. Phil, and Asa, will indeed be missed.

Does it seem to anyone else like the Daytime community has lost far too many legends of late? This is so sad.

That's sad. He was just onscreen a month ago. It's also weird to learn he was only 13 years older than his onscreen son, Clint Ritchie.

OH my God, this is such a shock, Mr Carey was such a screen legend. His portrayal of Asa Buchanan exemplified what a strong, powerful and loving screen patriarch should be.
First Clint Ritchie and now Phil Carey, all our soap greats seem to be disappearing and I am grateful that his work has been immortalised and will stay with us forever.
R.I.P Mr Carey.

First Clint Richie (THE only Clint) and now Phil Carey as Asa. Wow, I am sad for their families and for the ones who loved both characters when the Buc's arrived on OLTL in 1979.

Very dissappointing. R.I.P. Phil. I loved the character of ASA, any scene he was ever in was never boring.

Such a sad week. I'm glad the last episode of OLTL he did was so much fun to watch and I hope he had fun doing it. He will definitely be missed.

I agree SusieQ--he went out on OLTL as Asa with a bang. His last appearance on OLTL via a videotaped will codicil, telling the Buchs that everything was going to David Vickers, just exemplified why Asa was such a great soap character and why Phil Carey made him that way. He wasn't just a soap character, he was a CHARACTER.

My head hangs low as a tear runs down my face. First Clint Ritchie and now Phil. Phil was one of original cowboys, the John Wayne of daytime, strong, powerful and underneath that Stetson hat a heart of gold. His character Asa will always be remembered as a daytime icon as the most married man in daytime and one of the most powerful tycoons also in daytime.
As a longtime OLTL viewer I will truly miss both cowboys. R.I.P Phil & Clint. The great cowboys have rode off to that great ranch in the sky.

I just hope OLTL takes time out to pay tribute to both Phil and Clint, those two deserve a grand tribute not only to them and the characters that they created, but for their life long fans.
