Goodbye Tony: The End of the DiMera Empire - 'Salute'
By Brian Peel on February 03, 2009
Extra! Extra! Read All About It! - Thaao Penghlis is out as Tony DiMera on Days of Our Lives. One could now ask where this would leave several Days storylines - a show of drama, surrounded in drama. Does this spell the end of the true authentic DiMera empire? We have been privileged to see Tony and Stefano opposite eachother on screen for many years in the 80's and have since been reunited on screen in recent times. Rumour has it that Tony will leave the show in a 'blaze of glory' or big Salem murder mystery. I see the potential of this being a major sweeps storyline, but the question now arises as to where Leann Hunley fits into the Days of Our Lives equation. Will Anna stay in Salem and find herself a new beau? Or will the almighty Executives at NBC further chop the cast list and send Leann packing - just like they have Drake Hogestyn and Deidre Hall?

I dug up this video - as another Days of Our Lives flashback. A nine minute tribute to the Stefano and Tony combination. It's father and son drama at it's best - the true DiMera name in action. There are shades of Andre, touching scenes with Anna and many stunning confrontations between Stefano and Tony at war. For a show such as Days of Our Lives that is currently riddled in turmoil, we are now left to make the decision ourselves as to whether this show is truly doing what it thinks is best, or if they are well and truly beyond digging their own grave. Goodbye Tony and goodbye to the DiMera empire as we knew it. 'Salute'.

Thx for the great video, paying tribute to classic DAYS and the Dimeras at their best.
As for speculations about Anna, I would doubt that DAYS will give her a storyline since they have never even seen fit to give Leann Hunley a contract. They haven't appreciated her so far; why would they start now?
My predictions: James Scott (EJ) is not going to stick around DAYS; and Stefano will either fake another death or get killed off. Really, without any worthy adversaries left in Salem, what is the Phoenix to do? I suppose he could get into a war with BOPE and S/K...but DAYS apparently is too poor to write that kind of a story right now for that many vets at one time.

If the new generation is that big, why don't they take the new gen. and use them to knock out the old.
Brady -- the new Black, Phillip-- the new Kiriakis, Lucas -- the new Horton, can team up and play offense on Stephano, taking him down on three different levels. Have the heroes stop playing defense with Stephano. Bring him down by taking him on instead of waiting for him to do something wrong.
I guess Sami is the new Brady or Chelsea. Toss one of them in there. Cause a Brady has to play a part in this.
Let them do like Batman take on the bad guy, Stephano.
Bring him down and as a result raise up an ever worse guy, EJ the new Dimera.
You still have everything that make the core families great and you've used the new generation to do what the old couldn't... in a way passing the torch.
If it has to be done, why can't it be done that way.

Best. Video. Ever. WOW! I'm not familiar with the history of Stefano and Tony's relationship but the 7-8 minutes of clips in this video entertained me more than DAYS has in a long time. It also shows that there was more than enough story to tell for Tony.

Tony dead? Really? After the Island fiasco, why on earth would anyone watch a "murder mystery" on DAYS? If DAYS survives the next couple of years, he'll be back.

The news of yet another vet being kicked to the curb has caused me to finally tune out from this dying daytime institution.

Thanks for the great video! Why can't they write the show like that anymore? Thaao has given so much to this show! I will miss him!

Unfortunately I read the post about Stephen Nichols and Mary Beth Evans before seeing this and I have to say it again - it appears as though the writers are trying to cash in on the teen drama scene, ala 90210. However, the only reason that show is remotely successful is because of its history. Higley is a moron who doesn't know how to write for her characters.
I remember the nod that Stefano gave to John. While touching, and seemingly a truce, it would've been better had there been a bigger build up.
*edited to add: I can't help but wonder what "Blaze of glory" means. Considering the writers' skewed view of reality, it probably will just be a tiny kitchen fire.

In posting my news story last night, word was filtering through about the Stephen and Mary Beth 'firings'. I was on the verge of including a line about these two saying thay may be next on the chopping block, but it seemed that 'Murphy's Law' kicked in early and Mr Corday wasted no time is following through.
Days has made some horrible mistakes in the past, but in the last year or two, these firings have been inexcusable. They should feel ashamed of themselves.
Lord help us if Stefano and EJ are wiped out - this show will be dead in no time.

This is just too too sad. I love the DiMera's, sob. I will miss him and Kayla/Patch. It's bloody hard watching all this go down. I think I'll head back to Denial Island, cause I don't know how much more of this I can take! Thank the Soap Gods for Y&R.

And that just the 80's! He had a nice run in the 90's with the Maison Blanche and Arimid storylines being the spoiler between John and Kristen. Good memories.

I'm just trying to figure out how Days is missing all this potential? They are sitting on a gold mine and they don't even know it.

Thaao Penghlis has already landed a job on another show for fall of '09 called EMISSARY. Apparently, wiser producers in L.A. recognized an excellent actor when they see one. So I say on behalf of Thaao, screw you, Corday and friends!

Here is a link to a Thaao and Leann (Tony/Andre and Anna) tribute montage, highlighting scenes from 2007 and 2008, along with some classic clips. They will be missed.
