Generations: When Sistahs Attack!
By Jamey Giddens on January 25, 2009
All the bad press daytime has been getting of late has had at least one positive side effect. Pop culture bibles like TV Week and Entertainment Weekly are paying attention to the genre again and even reminiscing about it's rosier days. EW.com posted the above clip, featuring a classic, bitchtastic cat fight between Maya (Vivica A. Fox) and Doreen (Jonelle Allen) on NBC's short-lived Generations. Maya and Doreen battled it out over ice cream heir Adam Marshall (Kristoff St. John), whom the late-Bill Bell smartly snatched up for The Young and the Restless shortly after NBC foolishly cancelled the groundbreaking soap. What I wouldn't give to see this show released on DVD or aired online. After you watch the clip, check out my exclusive interview with Fox last fall where she talked about her soapy past.

Best Catfight Ever!!

Damn. Now THAT was a fight. I never watched Generations (during the years that I didn't watch soaps), but that was fantastic.
We don't get to have scenes like that in today's soap opera world.
Yes, even black fictional characters can be written as over-wrought, crazy, melodramatic, INTERESTING and still be dressed to the nines (sadly, this was in the early 1990's).

I'm thinking 30 minute soaps make sense. GL & ATWT could go to 30 mins, as could AMC. Perhaps NBC could shock us (HA) and bring back either "Another World" or "Santa Barbara" for half an hour.
Always soaptacular-

30 minutes soaps do make sense in other countries where the writing is good and the shows look amazing, in the states a 30 minute show means you end up with B&B 'serving a daily dose of hair models for over 20 years'
Also I know i get alot of hate whenever i say this but would the masses really return to Another World / Santa Barbra so many years after its cancellation?
I mean it could have the "Degrassi" effect but i dunno it would be interesting to see
lol.

B&B only became hair model central in the last decade. For most of its run it was better than much of the rest of daytime. The show didn't start dumbing itself down until the beginning of the 2000s.

If TPTB could get A Martinez, Marcy Walker, Nancy Grahn, Lane Davies, Robin Mattison and Justin Deas back in the characters that I adored from my years as a Santa Barbara fan, then I would watch the show again. In a heartbeat.

I just think 30 mins soaps would fit in with everyone's busy lives. I agree if the right actors and characters would be part of a soap's return it would be possible!

NOW this is what I call a real catfight! Dynasty has got nothing on Generations, it was so easy to believe that Maya and Doreen were going to hurt each other. Soap writers of the USA, this is what happens when two STRONG women go at it, WATCH AND LEARN!!!!
Jamey, where did you find this it is amazing. I never watched generations but this clip has me pining after what I missed.

Aaaaah, Generations. I watched it when it was on. Not a great show but lots of fun.
That catfight was great. We need to see more of those on the soaps today.

Now that is how a catfight should be! I loved it when the ladies were taking off their shoes and jewelery! I was waiting for hair to go flying off! LOL! Anyways, a 30 minute soap does work better in todays rush on-the-go world. Soaps like GL, AMC, ATWT and Days could benifit from the 30 minute time slot. Too bad TPTB don't listen to it's fans and the great people here at DC! And I'd love if they brought AW or SB back for a 30 minute soap!! I watched those during summer vacations at my great-grandma house back in the day!

Guza's wife Meg was a writer on this show.. So I know he can get ideas for the minorities that GH is lacking. Mama told ya'll! When I spoke of this show on our New Years podcast (go back and listen) I mentioned this show and how it was the damn BOMB! This show was so damn good it made you want to jump up and slap someone. Well don't believe me see how Doreen and Maya got down! *LOL* Vivica and Kristoff played off well with each other so if Y&R can't get it in their heads to bring La Diva Victoria Rowell back I'm down with Vivica being Dru. Now this is my opinion people don't trip!

Oh this was my JOINT back in the day. That catfight got strong press too. It's a shame that this is one of the few soaps that never got a chance at a 2 year run. It was robbed. It was really good. Aunt Mary jumping out of the plane. Scandalous. The last episode when henry cheated on his wife with that bitch Doreen (who by the way had a fling with Henry's son Adam) and had a heart attack right there in the bed when who should pop in to help... Adam. Cliffhanger city. The show was hot.

I liked Generations, I didn't love it as much as Jillian (lol) but I did like it. To this day Doreen is one of my favorite soap b*tches. And she was also one of the best criers I've ever seen on TV - I still remember how her chin used to tremble. I always hoped the actress would pop up on another soap...

Now that's a fight! The kind that requires a stunt coordinator.
Frankly, most of the anorexic sticks populating soaps these days would pass out if they had to exert that much energy.

That was one of the best TV fights (verbal & physical) that I've seen in a long time! Thanks for posting! This was way better than that bitchfest Cane & Billy had on the couch at the Book Store (Y&R).
