Grey's Anatomy Dangerously Close to Jumping the Shark

I never thought I'd type this, but ABC Daytime and SOAPnet should stop getting ideas for their medical-based storylines from the once-groundbreaking primetime hit Grey's Anatomy. TV Guide is reporting that Meredith's little sister Lexie (Chyler Leigh) is going to be revealed as the ringleader of a secret society of interns who operate on each other for experience! Okay, first the lesbian casting debacle, now this?

What kind of hot, smelly mess is Shonda Rhimes pooping out at the House of Mouse? Grey's is becoming a bad sitcom and Private Practice is unwatchable this season.  How did these shows go from character-driven, sexy, poignant hours of guilty pleasure TV to, well, the last few seasons of Nip/Tuck?

Shonda you need to get it together sistah. I am beyond proud to see a woman of color as the show runner of not one, but two major network shows (Yes We Can!), but if you get outta line, I'm gonna have to read you like a trashy novel just like anyone else!

Private Practice is vastly improved from last season imo....so is Grey's Anatomy imo...

IMO Grey's is going for shock value instead of substance whereas Private Practice is Models, Inc. to Grey's Anatomy's Melrose Place.

That storyline sounds like something in a bad paperback thriller. Or Passions. Maybe Dr Eve Russell could be the ringleader!

I know that Jamey ....... and I love them. Different strokes for different folks. BUT ratings are the be all and end all in prime time, and private practice and Grey's are just trying to keep up with CSi and Criminal Minds where sensationalism and "ripped from the headlines" are the norm.

I love CSI, Criminal minds, etc but i am having a horrible time watching CBS shows this year lol.

ABC/NBC/FOX/CW i am doing pretty good with but CBS i think i have watched maybe one or two episodes of Sad poor CBS lol I guess i am just goign to have some good shows to watch during the winter 'off' season lol.

Thou i would love to hear your thoughts on CSI Tina Smile maybe in a certain show...... I dunno if you have heard of it, it's called Primetime pulse? meh, you wouldn't like it anyways it's on a 'summer hiatus' and has been for a bit, maybe when it comes back i'll remember to let you know Wink

I do think they have amped up the shock value but in terms of writing it much way better imo. Instead of focusing to much on Meredith's romantic triangle they are building in emotional s/l for all the characters again and giving the other character's individual romances more importance.

As for Private Practice, I look at it as a work in progess because last season so universally panned. Shonda and ABC knew it had to be retooled and so far each episode has worked towards that. Now Addison is being moved "power position" like she had on GA. Giving her an outside love interest has been very good for her.

The main black actress (I don't actually remember any of hte other characters names and only a few of the actors names) is being written better.

The pediatrician is being written much as a human. In the first he was much more of a sex joke, this season they have built on that but in the context of a relationship.

Amy B's character isn't crying an ex husband all the time and isn't a quirky wimp anymore...they've given her some depth.

The front desk clerk isn't just "eye candy" anymore, he's actually being given the opportunity to grow.

The eastern medicine guy has been given a bit of back story and he's still a bit shaky but it's helped.

Dig's character is the only one that I honestly don't think has changed/improved a bit.

Another thing for the shock value I think that the promo department may be trying to beef up the shock value in previews in order to help get people to tune in against CSI.

Yea i am horrible with their names as well Luke.

Totally agree with you on all the characters improvements.

But not only the improvements with character development but with the cases, there hasn't been a case yet on private practice that hasn't been a 'big' storyline (Incest, Cancer+Baby, possibly killing one child to save the other)

Yea that mite be the 'shock value' but hey it is working imo.

I just finished 2night's epi and it was AWESOME....it had the beginning of the secret society thing and I had no idea it was going to play a huge role....2night's episode was gold so i guess I'll wait to see how it all plays out before I pass judgment...

Not big on PP but I love Grey's. I thought tonights epi was great and I didnt find the "secret society" stuff all that scandalous - I bet that kind of "practicing" goes on all the time. I just loved the Xtina stories - her sharing her backstory with the new Doc, him seeing her differently, mcsteamy's irritation with the "matched set" he hooked himself up with etc. and I loved the Izzy stuff. A bouquet of cadavers - too funny. I liked her coming to understand the ramifications of what she did with Denny. Great epi all the way around.

Oh and as for Nip/Tuck...it didn't jump the shark for me until last season when that woman killed a man with teddy bear stuffing. That was the ep that made me stop watching. I may tune in for the first couple eps next season but I doubt it.

I actually think "Private Practice" is much better this season than it was last season. But for "Grey's Anatomy" ... if they really pulling this, I guess, I'm done with this show. First, firing Brooke Smith, even through it was a network decision and dropping the lesbian storyline and now this... Just too much. Even though, there could be hope that Lexie is dying in one of her experience ... I'm all for it!

Grey's jump the shark when they had that horrible "Gizzie" (yeah I said it) pairing in s3.

IMO Shonda let the hype get to her and lost her way.

See, I was starting to warm up to Erica more and more. I would have rather Callie had gone instead of her. The lesbian fiasco really turned me off to the character of Callie. The inappropriate phrases, the bed hopping w/ Sloan to test how gay she was or how to properly please another woman in bed was just plain wrong and NASTY, NASTY, NASTY!

These are two professional woman, DOCTORS for crying out loud who are exploring their sexuality at an older age. They wrote it for laughs, instead of taking it seriously. After the Izzie/George thing I felt for Callie and rooted for her, now I question why she is still even on the show. Who's going to be the go-to-cardiologist, now?

I'm, also, ready for Izzie to go! And, I don't get the dislike of Lexie. I find her much more bearable than Meredith. I, also, like that she is one of the only interns that occasionally speaks up for herself, especially, to Christina.

I loved tonight's show. Maybe now Izzy can put her past to rest. The old man trying to save his wife just broke my heart! And bring on more McRambo!!!

I think the writer's strike hurt the show last season, but I think it's getting back on track now. I'm glad Erica left. I never liked her from the get-go. Nothing against the actress, I just never liked the character.

I love Grey's almost as much as I do Lost which is my most favorite show ever. Private Practice is alright, but not quite what I thought it was going to be. I'm starting to think Addie should go back to Seattle.

I totally agree Jorpa!.

The storyline with the old man trying to save his wife was heart wrenching, and we so need more McRambo lol.

The writers strike has effected alot of t.v. shows, but I do think that Grey's has done a pretty good job 'post strike' and a better job then some Wink lol.

I'm enjoying Grey's- although I watch it with friends and we make fun of it the entire time- but it's wayyyy better than last season. Unfortunately I was enjoying Dr.Hanns and will struggle to carry on this season...Those execs need to, in the words of Dr. hanns, "put on some glasses" and get over themselves.

Private Practice has been slightly disappointing, but all in all, I'm happy we're not all trying to get Addison laid every episode.

The problem with this s/l is the character it centers around...Lexie- I've always found her annoying and don't see how integrating her into this s/l is going to make me like her anymore. It should be McRambo or McSteamy...two dark characters with enough fan attention to make people laugh, or reveal another layer to their characters.

I really liked Doctor Hahn.  Sad to see her go.  I thought she was a great character and it was good to see someone that didn't necessarily "fit in" to the typical McSteamy/McDreamy/swooning nurses set-up.

As for Izzie, I'm sick of her, and have been ever since Gizzie (gross name for a gross couple)  ... it pretty much trashed two lead characters in one fell swoop.

And I could never bear Meredith's incessant whining... so that's a fair proportion of the cast I can't stand!  I loved it when Christina told her to shut the eff up with her self-obsessed wittering - but then what happens: Christina get an icicle in her gut!!  I want someone to criticize Meredith and for there to be no repercussions   Damn, someone needs to stitch up her mouth for good!

Private Practice I quit half-way through the first season.  I think it was the shower head that did it for me.  I love Addie, but I couldn't be bothered investing in the rest of the show.  She's needed back at Seattle Grace ASAP!

I can probably deal with Lexie doing secret surgeries, I really don't mind her character... she's making George bearable again IMO.

I am very fond of Lexapedia. I really like the new Mcrambo. He's the first character to speak up and point out how horrible it is that the interns and residents fight over procedures and they are forgetting that the patients are in fact people. Lexie wasn't the ringleader. She found cadavers to practice on because the residents are not teaching. The residents stole the cadavers so the interns are resorting to practicing on each other. Dr Hahn was correct. That hospital is not very well run. I like the show better this year. It has less focus on Meredith and more integration of the rest of the cast.

sue, I loved when he yelled at Christina and Alex about the patient. He's sensitive, passionate, and absolutely screwed up! I think I'm in love.Laughing out loud Also, I think the s/l Jamey is referring to is what happened at the end when she went into the room where the other interns were and she says "I'm in". Depending on how it's told I think it could be a good s/l. It will probably lead to the residents having to take responsibility for there shoddy teaching and the fact that the interns had to resort to such drastic measures in order to learn.

But, I didn't like Callie defending Izzie to Erica. The woman slept w/ your husband and your going to defend her to your girlfriend? I don't think so. I understand her being worried about what would happen to the hospital and the staff if what Izzie did comes out in the open but who cares about Izzie!

The rumors of a "secret society" of interns "operating" on eachother is being greatly exaggerated by TV Guide. Actually watching tonight's episode showed all they were doing is practicing inserting vein catheters on eachother's arms, which I've heard of actual med students in the real world doing. Not a big deal at all.

I'm not usually one to defend Grey's Anatomy. I used to love the show but then got sick and tired last season of Meredith's incessant whining about Derek. But I've liked this season a lot better because it's taken its focus away from that.

So, to me, it's moving away from jumping the shark, not towards it.

I didnt have a problem with Callie's pov at the end - she said she still doesnt like Izzie, but its about the hospital and it is. It would be one thing if this JUST happened because then she would be fighting internally, but a hospital serves a community and if said hospital were negatively affected many innocent people would be hurt as would the chief and bailey - two people that Callie loves. My guess is if this blew up all 3 would be fired. Again, I am not excusing Izzie and if this wasnt old news, I think Callie would have supported Erica, but its not and Hahn needs to drop it.

Personally I like Izzy, in many ways I think of her as the heart and soul of the show. Yes Gizzie was AWFUL and I loved Callie with T.K. Knight's character but they stopped that and are trying to erase it. I think McRambo is a great addition and I love that McSteamy couldn't get Christina. As for Hahn, I've liked her because the writing for her is very much in the same vein as the first season with the "Nazi". I know tons of people love them but Mer and McDreamy are to me the weakest link on GA. It is literally the same thing week in and week out. Neither ever really seems to grow.

I'm not a big fan of Mer's sister, I understand why she is there but to me she is the most annoying.
