Days of Our Lives: Sexist Much?

So let me get this straight...Hope (Kristian Alfonso) turned down the Salem Police Commissioner position because it "wouldn't be fair to Bo and Ciara." But then Bo (Peter Reckell) turns right around and decides to pursue the position? I know Mad Men is all the rage right now, but when did the rest of television revert to the 1960's?
Is it "fair" to Hope and Ciara that Bo will have to spend "so much time" away from them as opposed to Hope? Why does Hope having a uterus mean she should be the one to sacrifice her career for home and family? Are we not living in a time when a woman just may soon be one of the leaders of the free world?
It would be so refreshing for the people in charge of this genre to realize that women are its target demographic. Women, who in an attempt to "have it all", have had to turn into Super Women since the Women's Movement, women who go out in droves to watch sexy, power women like Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda, not Bruce Willis blow things up.
Hope has always been a smarter detective than the Brothers Bubba, I mean Brady, and Days could have benefitted from having a bad ass lady cop in charge. Oh well, back to Sami (Alison Sweeney) crying and Chlesea (Rachel Melvin) and her Mee Maw Kate (Lauren Koslow) fighting over a male model, while Uncle Max plays connect-the-dots with his niece's freckles! The Devil is SO busy!

Bite your tongue! God bless Sarah Palin but my God that interview w/ Katie Couric was like watching the Hindenburg disaster. Oh the humanity!
Showing Hope become the Police Commissioner and show her juggling work and family and dealing w/ the issues that come along w/ it would have been the way to go. Is Guza writing this show? Hmm... I wonder.
But I have to say I'm in the category of rather seeing Bruce Willis blow up things than to see those 4 darn women talk about their vaginas! I LOVE DIE HARD! Best action movie ever!

Well, Jamey, this is Dean Higley's doing. She did writing OLTL to the ground with her women being weak and men being the alpha males who saves the women. I wish Hope would take the position because she is a smart woman who knows the job and can kick butt unlike some of t he women on the show.

LOL I know women like Die Hard too, but usually that isn't who those movies are aimed at, just like there are straight men who like soaps, it just sort of happens, but soaps should refocus on storytelling for their key demo. There's a reason Jackie Collins has 400 million dollars in the bank. Her books always feature women on top, if soaps did that, literally and figuratively, it could go a long way to saving this dying genre.

I also say that women flock to see "Sex in the City" was because it was strong women who take what they want and didn't apologize for their sexuality like women on daytime is doing now. Many women can do it all and I like to see strong women on daytime kicking butt instead of depending on a man to save them.

Oh and Seasons I would much rather see Hillary or even Condi be the first VP, Palin gives me nightmares LOL, but I do have to say we have come a long way as a society in that one way or another a woman or a minority will have one of the top two slots in the country soon.

Simon I totally agree. Sex and the City provided so much comedy and drama without so much as a rape or sterility written as a punishment for being "bad" the way daytime does. Have you noticed that the "bad characters" are always sterilized in daytime. It's absurd.

I completely understand what you're saying Jamey. I'm disappointed that Hope turned down the job, especially since it followed the whole Lexie/Chief of Staff stuff.
Maybe we'll see the high powered woman "juggling it all" story w/ Kayla?

Don't get me wrong, I loved the "damsel in distress" stories in the eighties with Hope and Kayla, but back then they also rescued their guys over and over again. They were partners. Luke didn't just save the world. Luke and Laura saved the world!

I am not surprise; contrary to opinion, every female HW I watch are more sexist than their counterpart!
ATWT is a proud example, since the new female HW came to town most woman became helpless, weak victim. They even lost their regular job Meg from nurse to waitress, Emily from editor to hooker; even the great Lucinda lost her company.
Like my mother said, who do you think bring up sexist people BUT woman!

I agree Timepass, these women who write these soaps are self loathing. Especially Megan McTavish. The way she raped, tormented and terrorized Dixie and Bianca. It's really peverse. These people need, not only to be fired, but banned from ever writing for the industry again.

Season, comparing the Palin/Couric interview to the Hindenburg disaster is an insult to exploding dirigibles everywhere!
Mister Giddens, I bow down to you once again. A fantastic post.

EXACTLY! Where's the balance?! One always has to be weaker than the other for some reason on soaps lately. That's why I have a problem w/ Liz from GH always being in peril. She's a rape survivor for Christ's sake! Show women who can defend themselves. If a woman saves her man or any man that doesn't make the man less of a man.
And sorry Big Pussy. I apologize.

True, but I am glad they made Margo the chief after Hal died, and not Jack.

I just haven't had the time to "catch you" to let you know that you sir are the true master! Your addition to the site has been the equivalent of a nice cherry black and mild after rough sex!

Or, Jamey, how about primetime shows like Brothers and Sisters, Desperate Housewives, Ugly Betty, Damages, The Closer, Saving Grace and SUV and other shows that is showing strong women having life and a job and taking care of kids without support or fall apart without a man in their lives. That and the writing and the style is like soaps but they doing it better than soaps use to do and its a shame.

I like the 'Mad Men' spin, but I guess I can understand where she is coming for (I have not seen this week yet, so I don't know what she says exactly), but isn't/wasn't that Roman's job? Why take his job? Unless he would be CO-Commissioner.
