Barbara's Oral Cancer Storyline nominated for Sentinel for Health Award

The nominations for the 2008 Sentinel for Health Awards were announced earlier this month and As the World Turns is nominated for Barbara's (Colleen Zenk Pinter) oral cancer storyline. The fact that Colleen Zenk Pinter had the same illness in real life made this story extra special for me. One of my favorite moments is the conversation Barbara had with Lucinda (Elizabeth Hubbard) who had cancer herself in 2005 (watch those scenes in the clip above). My only complaint about the story was that the airtime it got was pretty nonexistent.
The awards take place in Los Angeles on Thursday, October 2. For more information go to The Norman Lear Center.

I agree, Mark. If given the right amount of airtime & care, Colleen could have easily got herself an Emmy nom with this story. The sad thing is that Lucinda's cancer story got the same amount of care.
Kate's upcoming cancer story on DAYS will get swept under the rug right along with these stories, as well as Alexis' cancer on GH. Reva's story was probably the only one done a little better than these, and that's only because Kim Zimmer carries GL on her shoulders with ease.

This story really should have been given more airtime. It's always a treat to watch Colleen Zenk Pinter, and it can't have been easy for her to relive her real-life ordeal on screen.
It's in scenes like this that ATWT really shines. It's not the best soap when it comes to action/adventure but in intimate moments like this it's fabulous.

The next time a soap does a cancer s/l Monica's on GH should be required viewing to learn how to do it right.

I think if you going to doing a cancer s/l, do it right and not half ass it because people don't cure easily with cancer and get over it overnight. I would have like it if she is still going to the doctors for the illness or the cancer is in submission. Soaps use to do it right, but now that they made it a plot point and don't go through the beats of what cancer patients go through.

Simonstuart, I don't think Barbara is cancer free... They never said she was, so she's probably going to the doctors offscreen and they will use it in other stories (Like when Sofie made it look like Meg gave Barbara the wrong medicine).
