Ed Scott Speaks to Michael Logan
Now I know for a fact that today is yet another "Freaky Friday". TV Guide's Michael Logan has an interview with Ed Scott on being let go from Days of Our Lives. In the interview he talks about the friction between Dena Higley and himself and whether or not he was let go to avoid problems with the WGA.
Here is an excerpt from the interview.
TVGuide.com: What about the charges that you were at odds with Dena Higley, and that you were rewriting her scripts to the extent that she took her grievance to the Writers Guild of America?
Scott: That is nonsense, a bunch of blown-up nothing. I gave notes on Dena's outlines. That's it. Take 'em or don't take 'em. That's what producer-writer meetings are about. You haggle about things, you suggest stuff, but always in the end, you let the writer do what the writer wants to do. There were never any screaming matches. Daytime drama is all about passion and purpose — there will always be disagreements. I love Days and all the people there. It was a wonderful place to work and a wonderful company — there's nobody there who doesn't want that show to succeed. The cast is always ready to work. There is no one big star, no divas."

What I want to know is who had to clean of the BS after the interview was over? You've worked in this industry for how long and you expect us to believe you don't ask why you were fired! LOL!
And how do you fire someone who just had heart surgery? Now that's cold blooded!

I am so glad Ed Scott is gone. He tried to turn Days into a CBS soap, and that formula just does not work for Days. Days is a PLOT-driven show, not character-driven, and when it goes character-driven, Days drives viewers away because it's so damn boring. Give me the glory days when interesting things actually happened, like the Princess Gina saga or Marlena's possession or Kristen's schemes to break up John and Marlena or the Carrie/Austin/Sami triangle. Everything produced since Sheffer and Scott came to the show has been absolute rubbish. I'm glad Tomlin is in charge because he knows how to make good soap opera. In Tomlin we trust!

Funny. For 28 years Days of Our Lives was not a plot driven show per se until, arguably, 1993 when Vivian buried Carly alive.

I agree with DS9Sisko.
Long time Days fan here and I detest plot driven stories. And you can tell the difference on screen. Yes Days has always had big plot points and events, but in between were always good stories that flowed. Now the characters act bi-polar, the scenes don't flow from one week to the next, and we are being forced feed supporting characters that nobody gives a damn about (Trent, Stax, Nicole.....the list goes on)
I'm going to miss Ed.

I'm sorry, but I don't feel sorry for anyone who misses "character-driven" drama. That's all you've been given since JER left (hell, even before that, when Zack died), and the show has sucked. I haven't been able to enjoy my show in years. You've had a solid 2.5 years of character-driven drama, so you should be satisfied. Now the tide has turned and finally things are going in my favour. Neither one of us are going to be happy at the same time because we want two extremely different things, so unfortunately for you, it's my time to be happy.
No offense, but I don't feel bad. I am happy that it appears I will finally get *my* show back.

I didn't ask you to feel sorry for me. We obviously have two different opinions and I'm stating mine. I like character driven stories. This whole summer has been crap for Days and I'm not the only one who think so. So if this is what makes you happy.....well okay. Stupid, repeative dialouge, dumbed-down characters, and re-writing history just to serve the plot is lazy writing at it's best. It insults the audience's intelligence and they get frustrated with it. And I'm sorry, but this isn't "your" show and it's not "my" show. It's whoever is writing at the time's show. And right now we have a writer who was almost driven out of OLTL with pitchforks and torches for almost destroying that show.
Now that being said I've heard nothing really bad about Tomlin or the new co-headwriter Whitesell. In fact I've heard nothing but really good things about Whitesell.

That's because Higley's style doesn't fit OLTL. DAYS is not OLTL. Higley's style actually works for Days. I know you didn't ask me to feel sorry for you because you certainly didn't feel sorry for me when my show went down the shitter.
If you don't like it, don't watch. That's what I did when Hogan and Ed tried to kill it.

I won't stop watching, I'm not a fair weather fan. In fact the only time that I have not been watching on a daily basis has been this summer. But that doesn't mean I'm giving up on it. I'm going to fight for one of my favorite soaps to get better. Higley's style doesn't fit anywhere in my opinion. Any writer who doesn't watch their own show isn't fit to write for a soap. Again, JMO.
